Study Veterinary Medicine in Belgrade

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Belgrade was founded in 1936 and has been a member of the EAEVE, the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education, since 2002. The University of Belgrade itself dates back to 1808 and, with almost 95,000 students, is the largest university in South-Eastern Europe. In 2020 the faculty received the Saint Sava Award from the Serbian Ministry of Education for outstanding achievement in teaching and research.

The faculty comprises 22 departments and its own clinics for surgery, orthopaedics and ophthalmology, reproduction and artificial insemination, and radiology, as well as a mobile clinic that serves livestock farms. Students in the later years can complete practical placements at EAEVE-accredited partner faculties in Vienna, Bologna, Ljubljana and Budapest. The integrated programme is also offered in English. At around €2,500 per year, Belgrade is the most affordable place to study Veterinary Medicine in Europe. Serbia is not an EU member state, so we will talk through your individual route with you personally.

• Veterinary Medicine: Six-year integrated programme (360 ECTS) structured in line with the Bologna framework and EAEVE standards. Foundation subjects in the first two years, clinical practicals at the faculty clinics from the third year, and in the final years rotations, the mobile clinic and optional placements at partner faculties in Vienna, Bologna, Ljubljana and Budapest.

The integrated programme spans twelve semesters and 360 ECTS credits and is structured in line with the Bologna framework and EAEVE standards. The first two years lay the foundations: anatomy, histology and embryology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, animal breeding and animal nutrition.

From the third year onwards, clinical practicals begin at the faculty’s own clinics. Pathology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, microbiology, parasitology and infectious diseases form the core of the fourth year, while students also work in the small-animal and farm-animal clinics, the reproduction clinic and radiology.

The fifth and sixth years are clinically focused: surgery, orthopaedics and ophthalmology, internal medicine for horses, small animals, poultry and wildlife, ruminant and pig medicine, food hygiene, forensic veterinary medicine and the mobile clinic, which visits farms in the surrounding region. If you wish, you can complete a practical placement in your sixth year at one of the EAEVE-accredited partner faculties in Vienna, Bologna, Ljubljana or Budapest. The programme concludes with a final thesis and the title of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Tuition fees at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Belgrade are approx. €2,500 per year — the most affordable place to study Veterinary Medicine anywhere in Europe. Over 6 years, that adds up to around €15,000 in tuition fees. Monthly living costs are approx. €500 — a further €36,000 or so over 6 years. Total cost of the programme: approx. €51,000.

With around 1.7 million inhabitants, Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and sits at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube. Kalemegdan Fortress and its park, the Knez Mihailova pedestrian street, the bohemian quarter of Skadarlija and the banks of the two rivers shape the cityscape. Belgrade is direct, loud and full of energy, with a nightlife that few European cities can match.

Since January 2025, all public transport in Belgrade has been free of charge, including buses, trams and the urban railway. Living costs are well below Western European levels: a room is available from around €200 to €300, and you can live comfortably on about €500 a month. The faculty is located on Bulevar oslobođenja in the Vračar district, centrally placed and well connected.

The climate is continental, with hot summers of around 28 degrees and mild winters. Ada Ciganlija, a river island with a lake and beaches, is the city’s favourite summer meeting place. Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) lies 18 kilometres west of the city and offers direct flights to many European cities, including Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Zurich, with Air Serbia, Lufthansa, Austrian and Swiss.
