Study Veterinary Medicine in Iași

Iași University of Life Sciences (IULS, formerly USAMV Iași) dates back to 1912 and bears the name of the agricultural scientist Ion Ionescu de la Brad. Around 4,300 students are spread across four faculties, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has been training veterinarians for Romania and the rest of Europe for decades. The university is a member of the EAEVE and the European University Association.

The English-taught programme runs in parallel with the Romanian one and is identical in content. Facilities include the university’s own veterinary hospital, a teaching farm with livestock and a 3D visualisation centre for anatomy, the first of its kind in Romania. Admission includes an online conversation with the admissions committee, which is not a selection test but a chance to get to know each other. The programme is taught entirely in English, and there is no entrance exam.

• Veterinary Medicine: Six-year integrated bachelor’s and master’s programme leading to qualification as a veterinarian. Foundation subjects in the early years, supported by the 3D anatomy centre; clinical training at the university’s veterinary hospital and teaching farm from the third year; and rotations and external placements in the final years.

The programme lasts twelve semesters and is structured as an integrated bachelor’s and master’s degree. The first two years cover anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, genetics and animal husbandry. For anatomy, the faculty uses a 3D visualisation centre where students explore structures spatially on screen before moving on to dissection.

The third and fourth years bring pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, parasitology and infectious diseases, along with the first clinical practicals. The university’s veterinary hospital and livestock teaching farm are located on campus, so theory and practice are closely linked.

The fifth and sixth years cover surgery, internal medicine, reproduction, diagnostic imaging, food hygiene and veterinary public health. Clinical rotations at the faculty and placements in practices, on farms and with public authorities round off the programme. The faculty takes part in Erasmus exchange programmes, so a semester at another European faculty is possible.

Tuition fees at IULS Iași are approx. €5,950 per year — one of the lowest figures for an EU-accredited Veterinary Medicine degree in Europe. Over 6 years, that adds up to around €35,700 in tuition fees. Monthly living costs are approx. €500 — a further €36,000 or so over 6 years. Total cost of the programme: approx. €71,700.

Romania is an EU member state. A degree from IULS Iași is automatically recognised across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC — with no aptitude test and no separate equivalence procedure. The exact registration steps for practising depend on your target country.

With around 350,000 inhabitants, Iași is the largest city in north-eastern Romania and is regarded as the country’s university city: more than 60,000 students, Romania’s oldest university and a cityscape shaped by the Palace of Culture, the Metropolitan Cathedral and Copou Hill with its park. The city centre is compact, and the student district of Tătărași and the Copou area are the classic places to live.

Living costs are among the lowest in the EU. A room in a student residence or shared flat is available from around €150 to €250, and you can live comfortably on about €500 a month, including eating out and enjoying the café culture. The city has a lively music and theatre scene and is surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills.

The climate is continental, with warm summers of around 28 degrees and cold winters. Iași Airport (IAS) is eight kilometres from the city centre and offers direct flights to several European cities, including Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna and Zurich, with Lufthansa, Austrian, Wizz Air and Tarom.
