Study Medicine in Nicosia

University of Nicosia Medical School offers Medicine as a six-year MD programme and as a five-year graduate-entry programme for applicants with a previous university degree. Teaching is in English throughout. The pre-clinical and first clinical years take place in Nicosia; students complete the final years at partner hospitals.

Dean and professors

Since 2022, Prof. Dr. Adonis Ioannides has led the University of Nicosia Medical School as Dean, and in November 2025 he was unanimously confirmed for a further term. He graduated in medicine with honours (MBChB) from the University of Manchester, earned a PhD in Developmental Biology at University College London and previously served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Course Director of the school's MBBS programme; his research focuses on the developmental and genetic basis of congenital malformations, particularly of the oesophagus and trachea.

• Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Jovanovic – specialist in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics; heads the Department of Basic and Clinical Sciences and, after his clinical pharmacology training at the Mayo Clinic, was Professor of Experimental Medicine at the University of Dundee.
• Prof. Dr. Andreas Charalambous – neuroscientist with a PhD from Ohio State University; as Executive Vice President of UNIC Health he oversees all of the university's health sciences, including the Medical School.
• Prof. Dr. Zoi Dorothea Pana – Professor of Paediatric Epidemiology and Associate Dean for Research; formerly a Scholar Fellow at Johns Hopkins University.

• Medicine (MD): six years, taught in English, degree: MD; the final years take place at partner hospitals.
• Medicine, graduate entry: five years, taught in English, degree: MD; requires a previous university degree.

The MD programme lasts six years; alternatively, there is a five-year graduate-entry route for applicants with a previous university degree. On the six-year route, years one and two are pre-clinical and the clinical phase begins in year three. The pre-clinical and first clinical years take place in Nicosia, and you complete the final years at partner hospitals. The final year is practical and works like a full clinical internship year. Teaching is in English throughout.

The tuition fee is 24,000 EUR per year; Graduate Entry 25,000 EUR per year. Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing, specifying whether accommodation, insurance, and registration fees are included.

Additional one-off costs include the application fee, visa, health insurance, travel, and usually a deposit for accommodation. Budget approx. 500 to 700 EUR per month for living costs.

Cyprus is a member of the European Union, so the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC applies to the MD from University of Nicosia Medical School. Your MD is recognised automatically throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland, without an equivalence assessment or knowledge test — for the six-year programme as well as the five-year graduate-entry route.

You apply for your licence to practise with the competent authority of the country where you want to work. Most countries ask for proof of medical-level proficiency in their national language, and processing times vary.

After that, you can take up specialist training on the same terms as graduates of domestic medical schools. Because the final years take place at partner hospitals, you will have worked in several hospitals by the time you graduate — and graduate-entry students bring a second field of expertise as well. Nicosia swaps grey winter months for a sunny inland climate: January averages around 11 °C, while July and August climb to almost 30 °C. The city centre within its Venetian walls lies inland, away from the coast.
