Francesco worked as a care assistant for the elderly and did not hold a general university entrance qualification. At home, that made a place at medical school practically out of reach — there was no realistic route through the standard admissions process. He felt stuck: a strong wish to become a doctor on one side, and the sense that his education and career path had permanently ruled it out on the other. The repeated rejections and lack of any real prospects were especially frustrating.
