Studying Medicine & Dentistry in Scotland: Universities, UCAT, Costs

Short answer

Studying medicine and dentistry in Scotland: 5 faculties, UCAT, Highers admission, and tuition fees for international students – the complete guide 2026.

Last checked: August 2026.

Scotland has its own education system, its own school qualifications (Highers instead of A-Levels), and with Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and St Andrews, five long-established medical faculties — more per capita than any other country in Europe. For Scottish and many EU students, the medical degree is even free of charge through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). This does not apply to international applicants from outside the United Kingdom: they pay the same high "Overseas" fees as in England.

Medschool Experts does not place applications via UCAS or study places at Scottish universities — Scotland is not among our placement locations. This article nonetheless explains how the Scottish system works, what distinguishes it from England, and what costs international students should expect. Anyone looking instead for an NC-free place with personal support can find suitable alternatives abroad through our free study consultation.

The admissions system: UCAS, Highers, and UCAT

As in England, applications are submitted exclusively through UCAS, and medicine closes far earlier in the cycle than most other subjects — roughly a year before teaching starts. The exact closing date and the test window move from cycle to cycle, so they are worth checking against the year you are applying in. Scottish applicants usually sit Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers rather than A-Levels; international applicants more commonly submit A-Levels or the International Baccalaureate. All five medical faculties require the UCAT, though there are no fixed minimum scores. Each faculty decides for itself how much weight the test result carries against school grades, and what counts as a competitive result varies by university and by cohort. We assess your profile against the institutions it fits in a free individual consultation.

One distinctive feature is the joint programme ScotGEM from the universities of St Andrews and Dundee: an undergraduate medical degree specifically designed to prepare students for general practice in rural areas of Scotland, with a preference for Scottish applicants who have a connection to underserved communities — in practice largely inaccessible to international students.

The five medical faculties

Four of the five universities offer a complete, standalone MBChB programme. St Andrews is a special case: only the first two years of study are completed there, after which all students transfer to a partner university for the clinical years. For international students (fee status "overseas"), this transfer is not a matter of choice: they go exclusively to the University of Manchester in England, whereas home students can also choose between Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Queen Mary London.

UniversityAnnual fee — medicine (international)Note
University of St Andrewsapprox. £39,620Years 1–2 only; mandatory transfer to Manchester for international students
University of Aberdeenapprox. £50,100Complete 5-year programme
University of Edinburghapprox. £51,961Complete 6-year programme, approx. £311,766 in total
University of Dundeeapprox. £55,900incl. £10,000 surcharge for NHS teaching costs
University of Glasgowapprox. £62,730Most expensive option; complete 5-year programme

Dentistry: faculties and costs

Dentistry (BDS) is offered in Scotland at three universities — Aberdeen, Dundee, and Glasgow. All three require the UCAT and usually an interview. The figures below are rough estimates rounded to the nearest hundred.

UniversityAnnual fee — dentistry (international, approx.)
University of Dundeeapprox. £34,000
University of Glasgowapprox. £44,900
University of Aberdeenapprox. £45,400

What the route looks like

The Scottish route runs on the same national machinery as England. Applicants sit the UCAT in the summer before the application year and apply through UCAS rather than to each faculty directly, with a limit of four medicine or dentistry choices plus one alternative subject. A personal statement and a school reference go in with the application, candidates who get through shortlisting are invited to a selection interview or a Multiple Mini Interview over the winter months, and an offer is normally conditional on final school results. Evidence of English and a Student visa follow once the place is confirmed.

Test windows, application deadlines and the English certificates a given faculty accepts are set per university and per cycle, and they shift from year to year. We check the live calendar and the current requirements for the universities that fit your profile in a free individual consultation.

Tuition fees and living costs at a glance

Unlike in England, Scottish and many EU students pay no tuition fees thanks to SAAS funding — a privilege that has not applied to applicants from Germany or other EU countries since Brexit. They fall under the same "Overseas" rates as students from outside Europe. Living costs outside Edinburgh and Glasgow are typically £900–1,200 per month; in the two major cities, closer to £1,100–1,500.

The author's view

Scotland is often the bigger surprise in consultations than England: many families automatically assume it must be cheaper because Scottish students pay nothing. But the SAAS privilege applies exclusively to people with Scottish domicile status — for international applicants, it makes no difference to costs, and in the case of Glasgow, Scotland is actually more expensive than most English faculties.

What I find fascinating about St Andrews is this: a place there effectively means applying to two universities at once — St Andrews for the pre-clinical years and Manchester for the clinical ones — without international students having any say in that assignment. It is all legally clear-cut, but it almost always comes as a surprise to families hearing about it for the first time.

Summary

Scotland offers five long-established medical faculties, its own education system, and with St Andrews a structural quirk — but none of that changes the high costs for international students.

  • Applications via UCAS as in England, with medicine closing far earlier in the cycle than other subjects
  • All five faculties require the UCAT
  • SAAS fee waiver does not apply to international students, including EU citizens
  • St Andrews: pre-clinical years only; international students must transfer to Manchester
  • Annual fees between approx. £40,000 and over £62,000 per year
  • Medschool Experts does not place study places in Scotland, but does support NC-free alternatives abroad

Frequently asked questions about studying medicine in Scotland

Does Medschool Experts place study places in Scotland?

No. Scotland is not among our placement locations; we do not support applications via UCAS here. Through our free study consultation, however, we can show you NC-free alternatives abroad.

Is medicine in Scotland free for German students?

No, not any more. SAAS funding applies only to students with Scottish domicile status. Since Brexit, EU citizens pay the same high "Overseas" fees as other international students.

What makes St Andrews special?

St Andrews only teaches the first two years itself. International students then transfer compulsorily to the University of Manchester in England — unlike home students, who can choose from several partner universities.

Do I need the UCAT for medicine in Scotland?

Yes, all five medical faculties in Scotland require the UCAT. There are no fixed minimum scores, however; the weighting varies by faculty.

What is ScotGEM?

A joint programme from St Andrews and Dundee for general practice in rural areas, with a preference for Scottish applicants with a local connection — in practice largely inaccessible to international students.

How much does a complete medical degree in Scotland cost for international students?

Between approximately £200,000 (Aberdeen, 5 years) and well over £310,000 (Edinburgh, 6 years), depending on the faculty and length of study.

Do Highers graduates pay different fees from A-Level graduates?

No; what matters is residential status (Home / Rest of UK / Overseas), not the type of school qualification.
