Transfer from Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU): Continue Your Medical Degree in Europe in 2026
21.10.2026
Short answer
Studying medicine at Eastern Mediterranean University? Morocco has frozen Northern Cyprus degrees since 2024. How EMU students transfer to Europe in 2026.
What should you know about Eastern Mediterranean University before planning a transfer?
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU, Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi) is a public university in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. It opened in 1979 as the Institute of Higher Technology with 105 students and became a state university in 1986. In 2026 it teaches medicine and pharmacy in English, and its dentistry programme starts in English.
EMU has students from 108 nationalities, more than 60,000 graduates, and is a member of the European University Association. All its programmes are state-accredited in Northern Cyprus and Türkiye.
The health faculties are young. Medicine took its first students in 2012–13.

| Dentistry (D.D.M.) | 5 years | English at EMU, Turkish in clinical years | Years 1–2 EMU, 3–5 University of Health Sciences | ≈ €8,668–10,748 |
| Pharmacy (M.Pharm. / Pharm.D.) | 5 / 6 years | English | All years at EMU, Famagusta | ≈ €4,754–6,613 |

The Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine is state-accredited and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. The Pharm.D. holds provisional international accreditation valid until January 2027.
Is a degree from Eastern Mediterranean University recognised in 2026?
A degree from Eastern Mediterranean University is recognised in Turkey and Northern Cyprus in 2026. Elsewhere, it depends on how each country treats universities in the TRNC, a state recognised only by Turkey. Several countries currently refuse or freeze such degrees, regardless of the quality of the programme.
The cause is political. UN Security Council Resolution 541 of 1983 called the declaration of the TRNC legally invalid. In June 2026, recognition was described as varying by country and institution. In practice:
- Morocco: equivalence frozen since May 2024, after a Foreign Ministry directive to the Ministry of Higher Education. In 2026, estimates put the number of affected students and graduates at about 3,000 to 3,500, including in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. After protests in Rabat in March, on 22 April and in July 2026, talks were reported. Nothing is decided.
- Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE: reported in December 2020 as no longer recognising TRNC institutions.
- Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina: in our placement work in 2026, neither accepts the degrees or transfer students.
- EU countries: automatic recognition under EU Directive 2005/36/EC covers degrees from EU member states only, so authorities review Northern Cyprus degrees individually.
Do not confuse this with the Republic of Cyprus in the south, an EU member state. Our overview of the Northern Cyprus recognition crisis covers the wider picture.
What does the joint programme with Marmara University mean for EMU medical students?
At Eastern Mediterranean University, medicine is a six-year joint programme with Marmara University in Istanbul, Türkiye. Years 1 to 3 take place in Famagusta, years 4 to 6 at Marmara University, and in 2026 graduates receive a diploma signed by both faculties. EMU states they can then practise in Turkey and Northern Cyprus without further equivalency exams.
The design points clearly to a Turkish career. In June 2023, EMU reported that 34 joint-programme graduates received their diplomas in Istanbul after clinical training at Marmara University Pendik Training and Research Hospital. International students take Turkish courses for patient contact.
What about Morocco, the Gulf or the EU? We have found no public statement on whether a Marmara co-signature changes how those authorities see the diploma. Do not assume it does.
Timing matters too. The three years in Famagusta are usually the easiest phase to plan a move, because preclinical credits compare well with European curricula. After the switch to Istanbul, you are inside a Turkish clinical programme.
What changes for EMU dentistry and pharmacy students?
Dentistry students at Eastern Mediterranean University spend years 1 and 2 in Famagusta and years 3 to 5 at the University of Health Sciences in Türkiye. Pharmacy students stay in Famagusta for five (M.Pharm.) or six (Pharm.D.) years. In 2026 both groups face the same country-by-country recognition question as medical students.
For dentistry, the clinical years are taught in Turkish; the programme is a 30% English and 70% Turkish split overall. If you chose EMU for English teaching, factor that in. Two years pass quickly.
Pharmacy runs fully in English on one campus. Still, the Moroccan freeze of May 2024 applies to pharmacy too, and accreditation never replaces recognition by the ministry of the country where you want to work.
Can you transfer from Eastern Mediterranean University to another university in Europe?
Yes. In 2026, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students at Eastern Mediterranean University can apply to continue at other universities in Europe. Medschool Experts has already moved several students from English-taught programmes in Northern Cyprus this year. Each receiving university reviews your passed exams and sets your entry year individually.
Medschool Experts is the world's leading specialist for medical study transfers and frequently achieves high year placements, often year 4 or 5, at top universities. Your exact entry year becomes clear after a free review of your documents. The process:
- Your goal. We start with the country where you want to practise.
- Your record. We compare your EMU transcript and course descriptions with suitable curricula.
- A shortlist. You see only universities whose degree your country accepts.
- The application. We prepare the file with you and handle contact with the universities.
- The switch. You leave EMU only once your new place is confirmed in writing.
Rules and dates differ by university, so we cover them in a free, no-obligation consultation. See the universities we work with and how we support you.
Why are Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina no longer an option for EMU students?
Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina used to be common destinations for students leaving Northern Cyprus. In Medschool Experts' placement work in 2026, universities in both countries accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus, including students from Eastern Mediterranean University. That route is closed.
No public document announced the change; we see it in universities' answers to applications. If anyone offers you a place there based on your EMU record, get written confirmation from the university before paying or leaving Famagusta.
What this means for you: realistic destinations in 2026 are other universities in Europe whose degree your home country accepts. Which ones fit your record is part of the free review.

For 2026–27, Eastern Mediterranean University lists an annual medicine fee for new international students of about €12,577 to €15,723, depending on the scholarship level. A student who has finished year 2 has four years left, roughly €62,900 in tuition at the higher figure, before rent and travel.
The worked example: EMU publishes the medicine fee as USD 18,140 in its 30% scholarship column. At the exchange rate of 16 September 2026, that is about €15,723 a year. Multiply it by the years ahead:
The fee table does not say whether another amount applies during the Marmara years, so confirm your figures with EMU. The logic holds either way. Tuition paid for a degree your country may refuse is money at risk.
Dentistry follows the same pattern: about €10,748 a year, or roughly €32,200 for the three years after year 2. Pharmacy costs about €6,613 a year at the 60% scholarship level. Smaller sums. Same question.
A transfer costs money too, and fees elsewhere vary. The difference is a degree your country accepts. Our main article on Northern Cyprus degree recognition compares tuition across the region.
Which EMU students should act now?
In 2026, Eastern Mediterranean University students should consider a transfer now if they plan to work in Morocco, in a country reported as not recognising TRNC institutions, or anywhere that has not confirmed their degree in writing. Medicine students in years 1 to 3 and dentistry students in years 1 and 2 have the most room to move.
- You are Moroccan and need equivalence to work at home.
- You come from Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq or the UAE without written confirmation for your EMU degree.
- You want to work or specialise in the EU and have not had your case checked.
- Your move to Istanbul or to the clinical years in Türkiye is approaching.
If your career is in Turkey or Northern Cyprus, the EMU route was built for you, and staying can be right. For everyone else, a free check costs nothing. Read what others experienced in our student stories.
The author's view
I began my English-taught dentistry degree at the Medical University of Sofia at 24, so I know what it means to build a career on a foreign diploma. Since founding Medschool Experts, I have placed more than 500 students abroad, and my first question is always the same: where do you want to work in ten years? For many EMU students, the answer is not Turkey. That is where the risk starts.
EMU's joint programmes are well designed for a Turkish career. If your plans point elsewhere, use the credits you have already earned while they carry the most weight. A free review takes little time, and afterwards you decide with facts in hand.
Summary
- Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta (founded 1979, state university since 1986) runs medicine jointly with Marmara University, dentistry jointly with the University of Health Sciences in Türkiye, and pharmacy on its own campus.
- EMU says all programmes are state-accredited, and its medicine graduates can practise in Turkey and Northern Cyprus without extra equivalency exams.
- Morocco has frozen equivalence for Northern Cyprus degrees since May 2024; five more countries were reported in 2020 as not recognising TRNC institutions.
- In Medschool Experts' placement work in 2026, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus.
- Four remaining years of EMU medicine cost roughly €62,900 in tuition at 2026–27 rates.
Conclusion
EMU offers well-structured health programmes with close ties to Türkiye. That is exactly why your future place of work matters so much: the joint diplomas are built for Turkey and Northern Cyprus, while several other countries refuse TRNC degrees today.

Frequently asked questions about transferring from Eastern Mediterranean University
Is a medical degree from Eastern Mediterranean University recognised in Morocco?
Not at present. Since May 2024, Morocco has frozen equivalence for degrees from universities in Northern Cyprus, including Eastern Mediterranean University, and medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are affected. Talks were reported in July 2026, but no solution has been announced. Moroccan EMU students who need equivalence should look at a transfer to a university whose degree Morocco accepts.
Can I transfer from Eastern Mediterranean University to a university in Europe?
Yes. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students at Eastern Mediterranean University can apply to continue at other universities in Europe, which review passed exams and set the entry year. Medschool Experts has moved several students from English-taught programmes in Northern Cyprus in 2026 and often achieves placements in year 4 or 5. Your own entry year is clear after a free review.
Does the joint diploma with Marmara University solve the recognition problem?
Not automatically. Joint-programme graduates can practise in Turkey and Northern Cyprus without further equivalency exams. Other countries decide for themselves, and we have found no public statement from Morocco or the countries named in 2020 on this joint diploma. Get a written answer from your licensing authority before relying on it.
Can I transfer from Eastern Mediterranean University to Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina?
No. In Medschool Experts' placement work in 2026, universities in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus, and that includes Eastern Mediterranean University. If you receive an offer from either country, ask the university for written confirmation before paying anything. Other universities in Europe remain open.
How much does medicine cost at Eastern Mediterranean University in 2026–27?
Eastern Mediterranean University lists an annual medicine fee for new international students of about €12,577 to €15,723 in 2026–27, depending on the scholarship level (published in US dollars, converted at the exchange rate of 16 September 2026). The fee includes the Student Services Fund, VAT and registration. Rent, travel and living costs come on top.
Is Eastern Mediterranean University in the Republic of Cyprus?
No. Eastern Mediterranean University is in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus, which only Turkey recognises as a state. Universities in the Republic of Cyprus in the south belong to an EU member state, and their medical degrees fall under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. The recognition problems of TRNC degrees affect Northern Cyprus only.
