Transfer from Varna back to Germany: Credit Recognition for Higher Semesters

Short answer

From studying in Varna back to Germany: insights on credit recognition, deadlines and suitable universities.

A study place at Medical University Varna is one of the most sought-after options for prospective doctors from Germany. After a few semesters at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, many students develop the desire to study closer to family, friends and their future workplace. Transferring back to Germany is possible. It does not happen automatically, however. State examination offices decide on a case-by-case basis how many subject semesters they recognise from Varna, and each university sets its own application window. Those who plan early give themselves considerably better chances of finding a suitable study location. Last reviewed: August 2026.

How many subject semesters from Varna are recognised in Germany?

There is no blanket figure. Every office decides individually. From previous processes with students at Medical University Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov Varna, a pattern has nonetheless emerged: recognition increases significantly once the pre-clinical phase is fully completed; before that it tends to be more conservative.

No upper figure belongs in an article here, because none applies across the board. Medschool Experts is the leading specialist in credit-recognition placements for healthcare graduates and works with the world's largest choice of official partner universities, and high placements into year 4 or year 5 are common. Every record is assessed individually: the competent state examination office decides case by case, on the basis of the performance records you submit. What your own file supports is what we look at with you in a free consultation.

What is decisive is not just the number of semesters passed, but also what is known as subject coverage: how many of the content elements of your Varna curriculum correspond to what is taught at the target German university up to that point. Module handbooks, timetables and grade transcripts from Varna must therefore be available as completely as possible and in certified translation. If a document is missing, the review is delayed. It is therefore worth compiling the documents while still in a current semester in Varna, not just shortly before the application deadline.

Which state examination office is responsible?

The competent authority is always the state examination office of the federal state where you are applying, not a central federal authority. Each office assesses the performance records from Varna according to its own standards and takes varying amounts of time to do so. A complete overview of all state examination offices with their responsibilities can be found in the main article on the subject; there you will find the right contact point for your target federal state at a glance.

If you apply in several federal states simultaneously, you will in principle also need several credit recognition decisions, as each office reviews independently of the others. This costs time and patience. Those who decide early on two or three realistic target federal states, rather than casting a wide net, find it easier to stay on top of things.

Timing and process

Dates are the one thing this page does not publish. Application windows are set by each university, differ between federal states and shift from year to year, so a date printed in an article is usually out of step by the time someone plans around it. The sequence is what stays put: without the credit recognition decision from the state examination office, the application has no basis, and that review takes time. Work backwards from the start of term and leave a generous buffer. We check the current calendar for your target universities in a free individual consultation. The complete seven-step process, from the first enquiry to the state examination office through to enrolment, is described step by step in the guide on transferring back to Germany.

Running in parallel to the credit recognition process is the actual study place application at the universities, usually through their own portals or via hochschulstart.de. Both processes need to be kept track of; they run at different times but are interlinked. Those who apply for the credit recognition decision too late may miss the actual application deadline, even if the credit recognition itself would have been unproblematic content-wise.

Which German universities are an option?

Among the universities that regularly report available places in virtually every subject semester are Gießen, Göttingen, Cologne, Mainz, Münster, Tübingen and Würzburg. Broader admission windows spanning several subject semesters are often offered by Bonn, Düsseldorf, Duisburg-Essen, LMU Munich and Regensburg. This fluctuates annually. Which university actually comes into question depends on your recognised subject semester and the respective application cohort. For a first impression of how realistic your transfer is, it is worth booking a free consultation.

In addition to the sheer number of places, it is worth looking at the subject structure of the respective university. Some study regulations more closely resemble the curriculum in Varna than others, which additionally facilitates credit recognition. A location with many available places is of little use if the content overlap is low and as a result only a few subject semesters are recognised anyway.

The place-changer advantage

When allocating study places in higher subject semesters, a clear ranking applies. Hardship cases come first, usually for health or family reasons. After that come place-changers – students who were or are already enrolled at a German university and wish to change their study location. Only after that do lateral entrants from abroad come into the picture, followed by the lottery for the remaining places. Those returning from Varna generally belong to the lateral entrant group. This is not a bad position. It does, however, require realistic expectations regarding waiting times and selection chances.

Some students from Varna therefore first formally transfer to a German university once the credit recognition is available, and then apply from there for a later place-changer transfer to their actual preferred location. This indirect route via place-changer status is not sensible for everyone, but can be worthwhile if the first accepted place is not the preferred location. Whether this makes sense in an individual case depends on the subject, target location and personal situation.

What Medschool Experts handles during the transfer

A transfer from Varna involves a great deal of paperwork: grade transcripts, module descriptions, certified translations, applications to several state examination offices simultaneously. Medschool Experts guides you through this process, from the initial assessment of your credit recognition chances through to the completed application file for the suitable universities. We know the documents that Varna typically issues and know what offices pay attention to during the review. Much runs in parallel. A personal conversation at the start helps to assess the path realistically. If you want to know what your specific case looks like, a free consultation is the best first step.

This also includes an honest assessment when a preferred location appears unrealistic in a particular semester. We then show you alternatives, rather than raising false hopes. This way you plan your application with realistic expectations, rather than fixating on a single preferred location and ultimately losing time.

The author's view

Marcel Kloos, a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland and the founder of Medschool Experts, studied in Bulgaria himself – in Sofia, not Varna. He knows the Bulgarian university system, the examination regulations and the teaching culture from personal experience. This creates a certain closeness when students from Varna talk about their day-to-day life. What applies in Sofia cannot be transferred one-to-one to Varna, but the basic structure of the programme, the examination culture and the challenges of the transition to Germany are very similar.

From our consulting practice we know that students from Varna often bring a solid subject foundation with them, particularly in the pre-clinical subjects. Credit recognition initially seems unfair because the first few semesters count for little. Those who consistently complete the pre-clinical phase improve their position noticeably. It is worth it. The experience values show this time and again. That is precisely why we would not recommend anyone to stop just short of completing the pre-clinical phase.

Summary

  • Credit recognition from Varna depends heavily on study progress; the big jump comes after the pre-clinical phase is completed.
  • The competent authority is always the state examination office of the target federal state, not a central body.
  • No application dates are published here: each university sets its own window and those windows move from year to year, so we check the current calendar for your target universities.
  • Gießen, Göttingen, Cologne, Mainz, Münster, Tübingen and Würzburg accept lateral entrants in almost every subject semester based on experience.
  • Without prior German enrolment, you count as a lateral entrant, ranked after hardship cases and place-changers.
  • Medschool Experts supports you from the initial assessment through to the completed application.

Frequently Asked Questions: Transferring from Varna to Germany

Can I obtain German medical licensure with a degree from Varna?

Yes. Bulgaria is an EU member state; your degree from Varna is automatically recognised under Directive 2005/36/EC. You still need to apply for the German medical licence (Approbation) through the regular process.

From which semester can I transfer earliest?

Theoretically from after the first completed semester. In practice, a transfer usually only makes sense once there are enough performance records for a higher subject semester.

Can I transfer directly into the final year of study?

No. Entry into the final year is excluded throughout Europe, as the final institution bears training responsibility for that year.

How long does the review by the state examination office take?

This varies by case and differs noticeably between federal states. Treat the office's review as the step that sets your timeline and start it well before you plan to apply. We check the current calendar for your target universities in a free individual consultation.

Do I need to submit a separate application for each university?

No. The credit recognition takes place at the state examination office of the federal state; you then apply to the individual universities in that state with the decision.

Does Bulgaria count as an EU country for recognition purposes?

Yes, Bulgaria has been an EU member since 2007. Medical and dental degrees from Varna fall under the automatic EU recognition scheme.

What happens if my application is rejected?

This is case-dependent. Often, submitting missing documents or reapplying with supplementary evidence helps; sometimes the only option is to apply in a different federal state.

Is there a difference between human medicine and dentistry for the transfer?

Yes. A transfer is possible in human medicine up to the 5th year of study and in dentistry up to the 4th year; after that, the rule on the final year of study applies.

How important is the chosen target location for transfer chances?

Very important, as some universities open considerably more subject semesters to lateral entrants than others. Looking at several target locations is worthwhile.

Can Medschool Experts guarantee the credit recognition?

No. The decision rests solely with the state examination office. We prepare your documents so that they are complete and comprehensible.

Do I lose the exams I have already passed in Varna by transferring?

No, your performance records remain in place. They are included in the credit recognition review, even if not every subject is adopted one-to-one.

Is it worth transferring after just the second semester?

This is case-dependent. Those who are still in the middle of their pre-clinical phase often benefit from waiting until they have completed the pre-clinical stage in Varna.
