About the Faculty
The Medical Faculty OWL (Ostwestfalen-Lippe) at Bielefeld University is one of the newest medical faculties in Germany, established in 2018 and admitting its first cohort for the winter semester of 2021/22. Its foundation was part of a broader initiative to address the anticipated shortage of physicians in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region and to embed medical education in a modern, research-oriented university.
Curriculum
The faculty offers a model curriculum (Modellstudiengang) with a duration of 12.5 semesters — slightly longer than the 12-semester standard curriculum. The programme is designed from the ground up with a particular focus on ambulatory care, general practice, and digital medicine, areas that are often underrepresented in traditional curricula. Interprofessional learning and community-based education are core elements.
Clinical Training — Universitätsklinikum OWL
Like Bochum, Bielefeld does not have a single central university hospital. Instead, clinical training is provided through the Universitätsklinikum OWL, a consortium of three hospitals:
- Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel, Bielefeld (one of the largest diaconal hospitals in Germany)
- Klinikum Bielefeld (main regional hospital)
- Klinikum Lippe (sites in Detmold and Lemgo)
This distributed model gives students broad clinical exposure across hospital sizes and settings.
Research and Digital Medicine
Bielefeld University has a strong tradition in computational science, bioinformatics, and interdisciplinary research. The Medical Faculty OWL benefits from this infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on digital health technologies, medical informatics, and data-driven medicine — areas positioned to grow in importance in future healthcare systems.
Admission & Finances
Admission
As a model programme, the Medical Faculty OWL may use its own selection criteria rather than the standard Hochschulstart quotas exclusively. Applicants should consult the faculty’s official admissions pages for the current selection procedure, which may include aptitude tests and/or interviews. The initial cohort size was 60 places; this may increase as the faculty grows.
Finances
Bielefeld University is a public university in North Rhine-Westphalia and does not charge tuition fees. The semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covers student services, the student union, and public transport. BAföG is available for eligible students. Bielefeld offers affordable living costs and a strong student infrastructure.
Examination Regulations & Retakes
Studies & Recognition
Recognition of the Degree
The degree awarded is the Staatsexamen, leading to the Approbation under § 3 BÄO. As a model curriculum approved under the ÄAppO, it carries the same legal standing as the standard curriculum. The qualification is recognised throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC and Delegated Decision (EU) 2023/2383.
Further Training
Graduates can pursue specialist training (Facharztausbildung) in Germany or abroad. Given the faculty’s focus on ambulatory and general practice medicine, graduates are well prepared for careers in primary care, alongside all hospital specialties available through the training hospitals.
Pros & Cons
Campus & Life
Campus and Student Life
Bielefeld is a city of around 340,000 in the Teutoburg Forest region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Bielefeld University is known for its iconic brutalist main building and its strong interdisciplinary research culture. Medical students are integrated into the wider university community, benefiting from shared facilities, student organisations, and a well-developed student life infrastructure.
As a relatively small and young cohort, medical students at Bielefeld benefit from close contact with faculty staff and a tight-knit peer community. The cost of living is low, and the city is well connected by rail to other Ruhr and Westphalia cities.
