The University of Debrecen is located in eastern Hungary, was founded in 1912, and is one of the country's largest universities. Human medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy run in the international programme in English, taught at the university's own hospital, one of the largest in Hungary. The faculty is especially known for a second entry route: applicants who do not pass the entrance examination can begin via a preparatory year.

What makes the faculty stand out

The preparatory year is the real distinguishing feature from other Hungarian faculties. It is aimed at applicants who do not pass the biology and chemistry test at the first attempt and brings them up to the required level over two semesters. This makes Debrecen one of the few locations where a narrowly missed test does not end the plan. The route does, however, cost an additional year and additional money.

The second point is the hospital. Clinical teaching from the third year takes place at one of the largest hospitals in Hungary, and the range of specialties is correspondingly wide. Clinical electives in German-speaking countries are possible during the holidays. The city is compact, the distances between campus, hospital, and residential areas are short, and the student body is internationally mixed. Those studying in English work with the language of the specialist literature from the very beginning.

Where the limits lie

Teaching is in English. A German-language programme in medicine is listed, but the one you can plan reliably is the English one – whether and in which year a German-language group starts is something to clarify in advance. Add to this Hungarian: the courses are compulsory, are examined, and cost time alongside the academic content on an ongoing basis, because in the clinical section you speak with Hungarian-speaking patients.

Financially, Debrecen is cheaper than Budapest but not inexpensive: €14,500 in tuition per year plus €550–750 per month for living costs add up to a substantial sum over six years. A preparatory year increases the bill further. And the location in the east of the country near the Romanian border means a longer journey than from the capital.

Who this location suits

Debrecen suits you if English-language study works for you, if you value short distances and a large hospital, and if costs well below Budapest levels matter. Those looking for a second chance after a missed entrance test will find one of the few official routes here. Those who want to hear German or need a great deal of city life, however, should look at other locations. Admission & Finances

Entrance examination instead of school-leaving grade

A general university entrance qualification is required; there is no Numerus clausus. Admission is decided by a written test in biology and chemistry followed by an interview about your motivation and your idea of the medical profession. The content is upper-secondary school material, not specialist university knowledge. Examination dates are available several times a year and participation is generally possible online. Those who do not pass the test can enter via the preparatory year; it lasts two semesters, costs additional money, and extends the overall duration accordingly. We organise the application and test registration; travel to Hungary is not necessary for this.

Deadlines

The programme starts in September; there is no summer-semester entry point. Those coming via the preparatory year also start in autumn and begin the actual medicine programme one year later. We deliberately do not state fixed application dates here, as they shift from year to year. More important than the date is the lead time: preparation in biology and chemistry takes months, not weeks.

Tuition fees and living costs

Human medicine costs €7,250 per semester, dentistry €7,500; that is €14,500 and €15,000 per year respectively. Over twelve semesters of human medicine this amounts to approximately €87,000, over ten semesters of dentistry approximately €75,000, with a preparatory year on top where applicable. For rent, food, public transport, and insurance you should budget €550–750 per month – noticeably less than in Budapest. Study-abroad BAföG is possible because Hungary is a member of the European Union; the subsidy does not cover the tuition fee in full, however.

Examination Regulations & Retakes

Studies & Recognition

Structure and language of instruction

Human medicine lasts six years and covers 360 ECTS; dentistry and pharmacy each last five years. The first two years cover anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, and embryology, with accompanying Hungarian courses. From the third year the clinical section follows with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology, and psychiatry. Teaching and examinations are in English, including specialist literature. The examination density is high and the structure is very clear – you know early what is expected of you.

Clinical training and practical work

Clinical teaching takes place at the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre, one of Hungary's largest hospitals, and the range of specialties is correspondingly wide. The sixth year consists of ward rotations and corresponds to the German Praktisches Jahr; in dentistry, patient contact begins earlier. Clinical electives in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland are possible during the holidays; credit recognition is decided by the university according to its examination regulations.

Recognition in Germany

Hungary is a member of the European Union. The degree of the University of Debrecen therefore falls under Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V, as amended by Commission Delegated Decision (EU) 2023/2383, and is automatically recognised in Germany. No equivalence examination applies and no knowledge examination either, and Germany does not require an additional state examination for Hungarian degrees. The fact that you studied in English makes no difference to this. You apply for Approbation at the competent authority of the federal state in which you wish to work; processing times differ by state. In Austria the Austrian Medical Chamber decides, and in Switzerland the responsible federal authority.

Pros & Cons

Campus & Life

Life in Debrecen

Debrecen has approximately 200,000 inhabitants, is Hungary's second-largest city, and lies in the east of the country. The city centre is compact; tram and short walking distances cover everyday needs, and the proportion of students is high. Cafés, parks, and a large university quarter shape the townscape. There is less going on than in Budapest, but living costs at €550–750 per month are correspondingly lower.

Housing and daily life

University halls of residence and private shared flats in the city centre are both common. At the start of the semester in late summer, supply shrinks and prices rise; those who search early have more choice. The distances between campus, hospital, and residential areas are short enough to manage without a car.

Community and travel

The student body is internationally mixed; German-speaking groups are easy to find alongside fellow students from across Europe. The location near the Romanian border means a longer journey than from Budapest; the city has its own airport, and the train to Budapest takes around three hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the degree from the University of Debrecen recognised in Germany?

Yes. Hungary is a member of the European Union, so the diploma falls under Directive 2005/36/EC and is automatically recognised in Germany. No equivalence or knowledge examination is required. The fact that you studied in English makes no difference. You apply for Approbation at the competent authority of your federal state.

What is the preparatory year in Debrecen?

It is a preliminary entry route for applicants who do not pass the entrance test. Over two semesters, biology, chemistry, and the scientific foundations are brought up to the required level, after which the regular programme begins. This extends the total duration by one year and costs additional money, but it is a realistic second-chance route.

How does the entrance examination work?

The university tests written biology and chemistry and then conducts an interview about your motivation. The content is from upper-secondary school; specialist university knowledge is not required. Dates are available several times a year and participation is generally possible online. Without targeted preparation the test is difficult to pass.

What does the programme in Debrecen cost?

Human medicine costs €7,250 per semester, or €14,500 per year; dentistry is €7,500 per semester. Over twelve semesters that amounts to approximately €87,000. For rent, food, public transport, and insurance, add €550–750 per month, noticeably less than in Budapest.

Do I have to learn Hungarian?

In the first years of study you take accompanying Hungarian courses, because in the clinical section you speak with Hungarian-speaking patients. The courses are compulsory and are examined. Hungarian is not an Indo-European language and is considered difficult to access; those who take the courses seriously have a clear advantage on the ward.
