Medical Studies at HMU Campus Düsseldorf/Krefeld

The HMU Health and Medical University Campus Düsseldorf/Krefeld is the newest of HMU's four German campuses. The programme leads to the German Staatsexamen — the standard German medical qualification — and is free of Numerus clausus restrictions. The TMS is not accepted.

The campus operates across two locations: pre-clinical teaching takes place in the Medienhafen district of Düsseldorf, one of Germany's most modern urban quarters. The clinical phase is conducted at Helios Klinikum Krefeld, a large academic teaching hospital with over 1,400 beds and more than 40 specialised departments.

WFME Accreditation

The HMU holds WFME (World Federation for Medical Education) accreditation. This means graduates are eligible to pursue ECFMG certification and sit the USMLE examinations, opening the pathway to residency in the United States — a significant advantage over many other European medical programmes.

First Intake

The Düsseldorf/Krefeld campus welcomes its first cohort in the winter semester 2026/27.

Examination Regulations & Retakes

Studies & Recognition

Studies & Recognition

The HMU programme leads to the German Staatsexamen under the Approbationsordnung für Ärzte. As a state-recognised German university, the HMU degree is fully equivalent to degrees from German public medical faculties and is automatically recognised throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC.

HMU holds WFME accreditation, making graduates eligible for ECFMG certification and the USMLE pathway to US residency. Applicants interested in this route should verify current ECFMG requirements independently.

Pros & Cons

Campus & Life

Campus & Student Life

Düsseldorf is one of Germany's most cosmopolitan cities — a centre of fashion, media, and international business on the Rhine. The Medienhafen, where pre-clinical teaching takes place, is a striking waterfront district with modern architecture and a vibrant atmosphere. Krefeld, located 20 km from Düsseldorf, offers a quieter city environment while remaining closely connected to the regional metropolitan area. Students benefit from studying within the German medical system, with all recognition and licensure concerns fully resolved from day one.
