Medical Studies at HMU Campus Potsdam

The HMU Health and Medical University Campus Potsdam is the original founding campus of the HMU. It began operations in the winter semester 2020/21 and received state recognition from the state of Brandenburg on 15 November 2019. The programme leads to the German Staatsexamen under the Approbationsordnung für Ärzte, without Numerus clausus restriction.

Clinical training takes place at Klinikum Ernst von Bergmann in Potsdam, a major regional hospital with over 1,100 beds and approximately 35 specialised departments. The hospital serves as both the academic teaching hospital and the primary clinical training site for HMU Potsdam students.

Accreditation

In November 2024, HMU Potsdam received accreditation from both AHPGS (Akkreditierungsrat für Studiengänge der Hochschulmedizin und Gesundheitswissenschaften) and WFME (World Federation for Medical Education) for a period of eight years. WFME accreditation opens the ECFMG/USMLE pathway for graduates wishing to pursue residency in the United States.

Admission & Finances

HMU Campus Potsdam does not apply an NC restriction. The selection process is identical across all HMU campuses:

• 90-minute multiple-choice entrance test (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics) — weighted at 25%
• 20-minute personal interview with case simulation — weighted at 75%

The TMS is not accepted. An application fee of €500 and an enrolment fee of €100 apply.

Tuition fees are €1,500 per month during the pre-clinical and clinical phases, and €300 per month during the Praktisches Jahr (PJ). BAföG is not available for private universities.

Studies & Recognition

The Staatsexamen programme at HMU Potsdam follows the German Approbationsordnung für Ärzte. As a state-recognised German university (state recognition by Brandenburg since 15 November 2019), the degree is fully equivalent to those from German public medical faculties and automatically recognised throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC.

WFME accreditation (granted November 2024, valid 8 years) enables graduates to pursue ECFMG certification and the USMLE pathway to US residency. Applicants should verify current ECFMG requirements independently.
