Among German medical students, Varna is probably the best-known destination in Bulgaria — and that is not a marketing myth, but something you can actually count: Germans make up over 40 per cent of all international students at the Medical University "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov", by far the largest group. If you enrol here, you will not find yourself an outsider in the lecture hall; from the very first semester you will be surrounded by people who sat the same Abitur, have the same questions, and share the same doubts.

The University on the Black Sea

The university opened its doors in 1961 and today comprises faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Public Health, as well as a Medical College; branch campuses in Sliven, Shumen and Veliko Tarnovo train students in nursing and allied health professions. Clinical training takes place primarily at the University Hospital "St. Marina", supplemented by specialist institutions for psychiatry, obstetrics and ophthalmology. Quality management is taken notably seriously in Varna — in 2008 the university became the first in Bulgaria to adopt the EFQM model. In practice, this translates into well-organised learning platforms and relatively modern technical facilities in the pre-clinical institutes.

The Programme on Campus

Six years, entirely in English, culminating in state examinations. The structure follows the classic pattern: the first year covers Physics and Biophysics, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Histology, together with Medical Latin. Bulgarian is a compulsory subject during the first three years — the university is open about its reasoning: before entering the clinical phase, you need to be able to communicate with patients without risking misunderstandings. After the sixth semester there is a 30-day summer placement, and the final year is predominantly practical. Assessment uses the Bulgarian grading scale of 2 to 6, where 2 is a fail.

Who This Location Suits

The large German cohort is both an advantage and a trap. The advantage: past exam papers, study groups, someone to explain how the anatomy test works, and a gentle introduction to daily life abroad. The trap: it is entirely possible to spend six years in Varna without ever speaking Bulgarian — and you will pay the price for that at the latest when you reach the wards. Anyone prone to staying within the German bubble should be honest with themselves and take active steps to counter it. There is also the dual character of the city itself: Varna is Bulgaria's third-largest city and a seaside resort at the same time, which pushes prices and noise levels up in summer. That said, if you are looking for the sea, a predictable admissions process and a large German-speaking community, Varna is still the right choice.

Admission & Finances

The Entrance Test

Rather than school grades, what counts here is a test in Chemistry and Biology. Each section lasts ninety minutes and covers upper-secondary school material, with five question types: multiple choice with one correct answer, gap-fill exercises, matching tasks, true-or-false statements, and definitions and explanations. Simply ticking boxes is not enough — you also need to be able to formulate terms in your own words.

Dates and Process

Varna offers several exam sittings per year, which makes planning more straightforward than at many other universities. In 2026, online sittings were scheduled for 4 April, 16 May and 13 June, with additional dates on 16 July and 3 September exclusively for applicants from EU countries. Retakes of individual subjects are possible. To be included in the final ranking, you must have submitted your complete application documents in hard copy and received recognition of your school-leaving certificate from the Bulgarian authority NACID.

Fees and Cost of Living

The application fee is 340 euros and is non-refundable; a retake of a single subject costs 150 euros, and the optional preparatory course costs 600 euros. Tuition fees for English-taught Medicine are staggered across the programme: 10,000 euros in the first and second years, 9,100 euros in the third and fourth, and 9,000 euros in the fifth and sixth year, payable annually or in two instalments. The cost of living in Varna is considerably lower than in Germany, though it rises above the level of inland Bulgarian cities during the summer months.

Examination Regulations & Retakes

Studies & Recognition

Programme Structure and Examinations

The degree spans six years and concludes with state examinations. The pre-clinical subjects are followed by the clinical disciplines, with a 30-day summer placement after the sixth semester; the final year is predominantly practical. Grades run from 2 to 6; a 2 is a fail. Attendance at seminars and practical sessions is monitored.

Language and Clinical Training

The language of instruction and examination is English. Bulgarian is compulsory during the first three years, starting at A1 level, because a working knowledge of the language is expected before entry into the clinical phase. Practical training takes place at, among other institutions, the University Hospital "St. Marina". How much you actually gain on the wards will depend on your Bulgarian — this is the point at which many students underestimate the effort involved.

Recognition in Germany

Bulgaria has been a member of the EU since 2007, and the degree falls under the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC, meaning it is automatically recognised in Germany. There is no equivalency assessment or knowledge test as required for degrees from non-EU countries. To obtain a licence to practise medicine under § 3 of the Federal Medical Licensing Act (Bundesärzteordnung), you apply to the competent state authority and demonstrate your language proficiency, typically by sitting the specialist language examination administered by the Medical Association (Ärztekammer).

Pros & Cons

Campus & Life

The City

Varna sits on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast and is the country's third-largest city — large enough to have teaching hospitals, concert venues and a real nightlife, yet small enough that many things are within walking distance. The Sea Garden and the beaches are right on your doorstep, though in summer the city noticeably transforms into a holiday resort.

Accommodation and Everyday Life

Most international students live in shared flats or furnished apartments close to the university; student hall places are also available. Rental prices rise during the high season, so those who start looking in spring generally get better deals. Day-to-day living costs are clearly below the German level.

Getting There and the Community

The airport is around nine kilometres west of the city and is well served by flights from German airports in summer; in winter the schedule thins out and you often need to connect via Sofia. The German-speaking community is the largest among the international student groups, with study circles, collections of past exam papers and a well-functioning network across year groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do so many German students study in Varna?

The university has been teaching Medicine in English for many years, the admissions process does not depend on Abitur grades, and the exam dates are early enough in the year to allow parallel applications elsewhere. Germans now account for more than 40 per cent of all international students. The side effect: a very active German-speaking community on the ground.

How does the entrance examination work?

The test covers Chemistry and Biology, ninety minutes per subject, with multiple choice questions, gap-fill exercises, matching tasks, true-or-false questions and open-ended definitions. The content corresponds to the upper-secondary school curriculum. There are several sittings per year, mostly online, and individual subjects can be retaken for a fee.

What does a year of study cost?

Tuition fees are staggered: 10,000 euros in the first and second year, 9,100 euros in the third and fourth, and 9,000 euros in the fifth and sixth. You can pay annually or in two semester instalments. The application and test fee is a one-off charge of 340 euros; accommodation and living costs come on top of that.

Do I have to learn Bulgarian?

Yes. Bulgarian is a compulsory subject during the first three years and is a prerequisite for being able to work meaningfully with patients in the clinical phase. Teaching itself remains in English, but taking a medical history and ward rounds are conducted in Bulgarian.

Can I work in Germany with this degree?

Yes. The Bulgarian medical degree is recognised as an EU qualification under Directive 2005/36/EC. You apply for a licence to practise medicine under § 3 of the Federal Medical Licensing Act (Bundesärzteordnung) at the competent authority in your federal state and demonstrate your proficiency in German, normally by sitting the specialist language examination.
