Short answer

Failed exams, close to the maximum study duration or deleted in Greece? What the rules mean for Medicine, Dentistry, Vet or Pharmacy and how a transfer helps.

At a glance

  • Greek universities now delete students who reach the maximum study duration: 9 years for Medicine, 8 years for Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy
  • The first deletion lists after the September 2025 resit were issued in December 2025; at the start of 2025 more than 317,000 students were listed for deletion
  • Failed more than three times in the same course: you can ask once to be examined by other examiners
  • Extension: two extra semesters on application, but only for students who are still actively sitting exams
  • Prerequisite courses (προαπαιτούμενα) can block later courses for years
  • Serious problems passing exams: switch early, because the clinical years get harder, not easier
  • Way out: transfer to another European university, often into a higher year
  • Coming back: an EU degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy is recognised automatically in Greece
  • First step: free consultation with Medschool Experts

For decades, Greek universities let students stay enrolled almost forever. Many people who started Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Ioannina or Heraklion simply drifted. A course passed here and there, a job on the side, and the quiet promise that next September would be different. That era is over.

If you have been deleted from a Greek university, or you are close to the maximum study duration and one course still will not move, you are not alone, and you have not failed your profession. Below you find what the Greek rules really mean for you, why so many capable students get stuck, why an early switch of university saves years when exams keep going wrong, and how a transfer to another European university brings your degree back on track.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Can you be deleted from medical school in Greece?

In short: Yes. Under Article 76 of Law 4957/2022, Greek universities delete students who reach the maximum study duration without graduating. That is 9 years for Medicine and 8 years for Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy. Failed exams alone do not remove you. Time does.

On paper, Greece is still forgiving with exams. You can retake a course in the January and June periods and again at the September resit, the επαναληπτική εξεταστική. No national rule ends your studies after a fixed number of fails. The pressure comes from the calendar instead. Every year spent on one course now counts against a limit that is enforced.

And it is enforced. At the start of 2025, more than 317,000 students across Greek universities were listed for deletion, the so-called αιώνιοι φοιτητές. The first deletion lists after the September 2025 resit were issued in December 2025. For many families, that was the moment a vague worry became a letter.

How a degree in Greece gets blocked: five mechanisms

The details depend on your department and the year you enrolled, but in 2026 these five decide whether you finish.

01

Maximum study duration

What triggers it

You reach 9 years in Medicine or 8 years in Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy.

What it means for you

You are deleted after the September resit.

02

Prerequisite courses

What triggers it

An earlier course in the chain, a προαπαιτούμενο, is still missing.

What it means for you

Later courses cannot be taken until that one is passed.

03

One course, many fails

What triggers it

The same course fails in period after period.

What it means for you

After more than three fails you can ask once for other examiners.

04

Extension request

What triggers it

You have most of your credits and sat exams recently.

What it means for you

Two extra semesters, only on application and within a short deadline.

05

Older cohorts

What triggers it

You enrolled before 2022/2023.

What it means for you

Your time is counted from 2021/2022 under transitional rules.

Your department's secretariat can tell you your exact deadline, because it depends on when you enrolled. Ask in writing. A dated answer is worth more than a rumour in a student group chat.

Maximum study duration in Greece: how long do Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy allow?

In short: For students admitted from 2022/2023 onwards, the maximum study duration in Greece is 6 years for four-year degrees, 8 years for five-year degrees and 9 years for six-year degrees. Medicine therefore ends after 9 years, while Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy end after 8 years, unless an extension or an exception applies.

Minimum duration and maximum study duration

Students who were already enrolled when Law 4777/2021 came in follow transitional rules. Their time was counted from the 2021/2022 academic year. Those who were already beyond the minimum duration at that point received only the minimum duration again, with no extra semesters. The deletion itself happens automatically once the September resit of the final year is over.

Typical points where a degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy in Greece stops moving, 2026. The exact rules depend on the department and on the year of enrolment.

A few groups are treated differently. Students with a certified disability of at least 50 percent are exempt from the maximum duration. Serious health reasons of the student, of a first-degree relative or of a spouse or partner can justify going beyond the limit on application. A hard illness in the family is not something you have to keep to yourself.

Failed the same course more than three times: what are your rights?

In short: If you have failed the same course more than three times at a Greek university, you can apply to the head of your department to be examined by other examiners, either another lecturer in the same field or a two-member committee. Neither the course teacher nor the last examiner may take part. This right exists once per course; if you fail again, normal exams apply.

This rule was rewritten by Law 5224/2025, and many students still have never heard of it. Use it. A new examiner does not make the material easier, but it removes the question every stuck student asks at night: is it me, or is it this one exam?

One course can hold a whole degree hostage. In some departments, a single subject owed by several cohorts at once has turned into its own small crisis. If that sounds familiar, write down every attempt with its date and grade. You will need that list, whether you stay or move on.

Can you get an extension of your studies in Greece?

In short: Yes, under strict conditions. Students who have completed around 70 percent of their credits and who sat at least two exams in the last four semesters can apply for two additional semesters, usually within 30 days of the September results. Students who stopped sitting exams usually do not qualify.

This rule rewards those who are still trying, and that is fair. It is unforgiving towards students who stepped away for a year or two because of illness, money or a crisis at home. If that is you, the extension may not be open to you. Better to know it in spring than after the September results.

Two more semesters only help if the blocking course really moves within them.

Deleted from a Greek university: what happens next?

In short: After a deletion, your student career at that Greek department is closed. Coming back into Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy in Greece means starting over through the Panhellenic exams. Your passed courses still exist on your transcript, and a European university can assess them for a transfer.

Request your transcript and the course descriptions immediately, even if the deletion letter has already arrived. Those documents are what keeps your work from the past years alive. Without them, every passed course becomes a story nobody can check.

Why do medical students in Greece get stuck? The real reasons

In short: Most students who stall in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy in Greece do not lack ability. The usual reasons are a family crisis or a death, depression or anxiety, money worries and work alongside studies, exam anxiety, and a single course that keeps failing.

A family crisis

A parent falls ill, the family business needs help, a grandparent needs daily care. In Greece family comes first, and many students quietly step back for a year that turns into three.

Depression and anxiety

Large lecture halls, little personal contact and years of exam periods wear people down. Depression rarely announces itself. It shows up as missed exam periods and books that stay closed. It is treatable, and Greek universities offer free counselling to their students.

Money and work

Rent in Athens and Thessaloniki has risen fast. Students who work evenings in cafés or summers in tourism lose exactly the quiet hours that Pharmacology, Anatomy or Biochemistry demand. That is a question of time, not of intelligence.

Exam anxiety

Some students know the material and still go blank in the exam room, especially in oral exams in front of a professor. They study for months and lose everything in ten minutes.

One course, one examiner

Sometimes the whole problem is one subject. Biochemistry, Physiology or Pharmacology failed in period after period while everything else is passed. Through the prerequisite chain, that one course then blocks the courses behind it.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor, dentist, vet or pharmacist you will become.

Serious problems passing exams? Why switching university early makes sense

In short: If you keep failing exams at a Greek university, switching university is often the better move, and the earlier the better. Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy rarely get easier in the higher years: clinical subjects bring more material, longer prerequisite chains and less time. A transfer abroad in the first years saves time, stress and money, and the courses you have passed carry more weight while they are recent.

Many students hope the hard part is over once Physics or Biochemistry is finally passed. Usually the opposite happens. From the third year on come Pathology, Pharmacology, Internal Medicine and the clinical subjects, in Dentistry the first patients, in Veterinary Medicine the clinics and in Pharmacy the heavy chemistry blocks. Whoever already struggles in year two carries that weight into every year that follows, while the maximum study duration keeps counting.

That is why at Medschool Experts we always advise switching early. A student who changes after the second year arrives abroad with recent courses and years of study still ahead. A student who waits until year eight arrives later, with older courses, a deletion in sight and much less room to plan. Both can make it. The first one simply saves years.

A new start at a European university often changes more than the address. A different exam format, in which written and multiple-choice tests play a bigger role at many universities, smaller groups and a fixed timetable in which you move up year by year with your class help many students who got lost in the Greek system.

Signs that a switch makes sense now

If two of these four apply to you, book a free consultation now rather than after the next exam period.

01

You have failed the same course three times or more.

02

You are already beyond the minimum duration of your degree.

03

A prerequisite course blocks several later courses.

04

You study for months but freeze in the exam.

Stuck at a Greek university: what to do in the next four weeks

In short: Before your deadline, ask the secretariat for your exact maximum study date, check whether you qualify for an extension or the health-related exception, use your right to other examiners if one course keeps failing, and request your transcript and course descriptions. The same documents also prepare a transfer abroad.

This four-week plan costs nothing and keeps every door open, including the one to stay.

Week 1

Ask the secretariat in writing for your exact maximum study date and your list of passed courses.

Week 1 to 2

Check whether you reach the threshold for an extension and note the application deadline.

Week 2 to 3

If health, a family crisis or low mood play a part, ask about the health-related exception and the free counselling service.

Week 3 to 4

Request your transcript and the course descriptions of every course you have passed.

Before the next exam period

Book a free consultation to compare staying with a transfer while every option is still open.

The last step matters most. A transfer is far easier to plan while you are still enrolled and your passed courses are on record than after a deletion decision.

Transfer from a Greek university to a university abroad: how it works

In short: A transfer from a Greek department of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy to another European university is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. Greek credits follow the ECTS logic, so the courses you have passed can be assessed for recognition. Which universities fit you depends on your individual profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, deadlines differ from country to country, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers worldwide, so they plan and carry them out with confidence. The consultation costs you nothing.

Medschool Experts is the leading specialist for this worldwide and regularly achieves placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5, at strong universities. Which universities accept your previous courses depends on your specific profile, and that is what we look at together in the free consultation.

How Medschool Experts plans a study transfer away from a blocked degree in Greece, 2026.

Coming back to Greece: is a degree from abroad recognised?

In short: Yes. Degrees in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy from another EU member state are recognised automatically in Greece under Directive 2005/36/EC. After recognition you apply for your licence to practise and register with the professional association. Transfers from a foreign university back into a Greek department during your studies are not possible, so students graduate abroad and return as professionals.

That is less of a detour than it sounds. Greek students already form large groups at universities in Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus and Italy, and many of them come home for summers, holidays and later for work. With around four to five months of holidays a year, you spend a good part of every year in Greece anyway.

The way back works through your diploma, not through a Greek secretariat. Plan it that way from day one, and the return becomes a date in the calendar rather than a hope.

What does another blocked year in Greece cost compared with a transfer?

In short: Public universities in Greece charge no tuition, so a blocked year costs living expenses of roughly €8,000 to €11,000 in Athens or Thessaloniki, plus a year of your life and a year closer to deletion. Tuition at European universities starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are lower.

International view: how Germany, Italy and Cyprus handle failed exams

In short: Greece now combines generous exam attempts with a hard time limit. Germany ends Medicine nationwide after a third failed attempt at a part of the state exam. Italy has no national limit on attempts but blocks students with esami di sbarramento between years. Cyprus offers only a handful of transfer places into Medicine each year.

In Germany the medical licensing regulation allows two repeats of a failed state exam part. The third fail means losing the right to study Medicine anywhere in Germany, and many of those affected continue abroad.

Italy counts years instead of attempts. One missing exam can keep a student in the same year as ripetente for twelve months, and long periods without exams lead to decadenza.

For many Greek families, Cyprus is the obvious next door. In practice it is a narrow one: for 2026/2027 the University of Cyprus Medical School offers one transfer place into Year 2 and one into Year 4. A wider European search opens far more options.

How Medschool Experts helps you save your degree

In short: Medschool Experts reviews your Greek transcript and course descriptions in a free consultation, finds universities for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans the route to recognition in Greece. More than 500 students have been placed so far.

Getting started is simple. You send us your transcript, and we check what can be recognised and where, without promises that depend on someone else's committee. Then we plan the transfer, the paperwork and the timing together, ideally well before your September deadline.

You can read how other students restarted on our student stories page and look at destinations in our universities overview. The first step is always a free consultation.

The author's view

When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, and many of my classmates were Greek students who had come north because the doors at home were closed. Several of them are practising in Greece today. I tell this because the Greek students who write to us often believe that a deletion letter ends their career in medicine. It does not.

The Greek reform was overdue, and it is fair that universities want active students. But the students who contact us rarely lack ability. Usually there is one course, one hard year or one family story behind the block, and the new limit simply means it is time to act rather than wait for another September.

Plan the next step while you are still enrolled and every passed course still counts. That is the moment when the most doors are open.

Summary

Greece has turned from one of the most lenient countries in Europe into one with a hard limit. Exams can still be retaken in January, June and September, but Article 76 of Law 4957/2022 sets a maximum study duration of 9 years for Medicine and 8 years for Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy, after which the department deletes the student. Since Law 5224/2025, students who fail a course more than three times can ask once for other examiners, and two extra semesters are possible for those who are still sitting exams.

The reasons students get stuck are human ones, from family crises and depression to money worries, exam anxiety and a single course that will not move. A transfer to another European university is possible, the year of entry depends on your profile, and a degree from another EU country is recognised in Greece under Directive 2005/36/EC.

Conclusion

A deletion letter feels final, but your goal does not have to end with it. If exams keep going wrong, do not wait for the higher years to fix it. They usually bring more material, not less, and an early switch of university saves you years and a great deal of stress. Talk to us before the September period. The consultation is free, and it shows you what is possible with the courses you have already passed. Book your free consultation.

Stuck or deleted at a Greek university: 15 questions and answers

Can you be deleted from medical school in Greece?

Yes. Under Article 76 of Law 4957/2022, Greek universities delete students who reach the maximum study duration without graduating. For Medicine that limit is 9 years, for Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy 8 years, unless an extension or an exception applies.

What is the maximum study duration in Greece?

For students admitted from 2022/2023 onwards, it is 6 years for four-year degrees, 8 years for five-year degrees and 9 years for six-year degrees. Older cohorts follow transitional rules that count from the 2021/2022 academic year.

How many times can I retake an exam at a Greek university?

There is no national limit on attempts, and courses can be retaken in the January, June and September periods. The limit that matters is the maximum study duration.

I have failed the same course four times. What should I do now?

Use your right to be examined by other examiners, which applies after more than three fails and can be used once per course. Then look at the whole picture: how much time that course is costing you, whether exam anxiety plays a part, and whether a transfer would serve you better. A free consultation helps you compare both routes while you are still enrolled.

I have serious problems passing exams. Should I switch university, and when?

Often yes, and as early as possible. Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy rarely get easier in the higher years, because clinical subjects bring more material and longer prerequisite chains. A transfer abroad after the first or second year saves time, stress and money. Even close to the maximum study duration, a switch is usually still possible.

How do I get an extension of my studies in Greece?

Students who have completed around 70 percent of their credits and who sat at least two exams in the last four semesters can apply for two extra semesters, usually within 30 days of the September results. Your department's secretariat tells you the exact deadline.

Are there exceptions to the maximum study duration?

Yes. Students with a certified disability of at least 50 percent are exempt, and serious health reasons of the student, a first-degree relative or a spouse or partner can justify exceeding the limit on application.

What happens after I am deleted from a Greek university?

Your student career at that department is closed. Re-entering the same degree in Greece means the Panhellenic exams again. Your passed courses remain on your transcript, and a European university can assess them for a transfer.

Does all this apply to Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy too?

Yes. The maximum study duration, the extension rules and the right to other examiners apply to every Greek undergraduate degree. For the five-year degrees in Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy the limit is 8 years.

Can I transfer from a Greek university to a university abroad?

Yes. Medschool Experts organises transfers from Greek departments of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy to other European universities. The receiving university assesses your transcript and course descriptions, and which universities accept your courses depends on your profile.

Will I lose a year if I transfer abroad?

That depends on your courses and on the receiving university, and it is decided case by case. Medschool Experts regularly achieves placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5, at strong universities.

Can I return to a Greek university after studying abroad?

Transfers from foreign universities into Greek departments are not possible during your studies. Students who move abroad graduate there and return to Greece as doctors, dentists, vets or pharmacists with a recognised EU degree.

Is a degree from another EU country valid in Greece?

Yes. Under Directive 2005/36/EC, degrees in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy from EU member states listed in its Annex V are recognised automatically. You then apply for your licence to practise and register with the professional association.

Which documents do I need for a transfer from Greece?

You usually start with your transcript of records and the course descriptions of the courses you have passed. Depending on the receiving university, further documents and translations may be needed, and we tell you exactly which ones in the free consultation.

Does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost anything?

No. The first consultation is free and without obligation. We look at your situation, your transcript and your goals and explain which options are open to you.
