Short answer

Failed exams or lost your study right at the University of Split School of Medicine? 2026 resit rules, ECTS thresholds and how to transfer.

Students of the University of Split School of Medicine can transfer to another university in 2026 and continue medicine in English with their passed courses credited; Medschool Experts plans and carries out the transfer, and the first consultation is free.

Split in late July is a strange place to sit a resit. The Riva is full of cruise passengers, short-term rents in the old town peak for the season, and the second exam period of the Medical Studies in English programme runs from 16 to 31 July. A student who did not pass the block exam in June now prepares in a city built for holidays, knowing that September brings the third and then the fourth period, the one in front of a committee. This guide explains the rules behind that calendar and what you can do if it goes wrong.

Split has taught medicine in English since 2011/12, and the programme has a distinctive shape. There are no semesters. Each subject is taught as a block, one after the other, and the first exam follows a few days after the block ends. Students who like focus love this. Students who need time to let a subject settle often find that the next block starts before the last one is passed.

A study transfer is a complex undertaking. Our experts have almost 10 years of experience in study transfers worldwide, which is why they plan and carry it out confidently. The consultation is free.

What do the University of Split School of Medicine exam regulations say about resits and failing a year?

The University of Split School of Medicine applies its Regulations on Studies and Studying, adopted on 25 May 2026 and in force since 2 June 2026. They allow up to four sittings per course in one academic year, one more enrolment of a failed course the following year, credit thresholds for each higher year, and only one repeat of any year.

Start with Article 41. A student may take the exam in a course up to four times in an academic year, with at least 14 days between sittings where the calendar allows. In absolute terms: one first sitting and three resits. The faculty's own programme guide for Medical Studies in English adds the rule every student remembers: the fourth exam period is always held in front of an examination committee.

A detail that surprises people: refusing a passing grade to try for a better one counts as one of your four sittings (Article 39). Ambition costs attempts in Split.

If you still have not passed after four sittings, Article 41 lets you enrol the course once more in the next academic year. Once. If you fail it again in that year, you lose the right to study in the programme, unless the university senate decides otherwise in a separate decision. There is no third round.

Progression works with credit thresholds rather than an all-or-nothing rule. Article 40 asks for at least 40 ECTS from year one to enter year two; 100 ECTS and every year-one course to enter year three; 160 ECTS and every year-two course to enter year four; then 220 and 280 ECTS for years five and six, each time with the year before last completely passed. In effect, you may carry open courses for one year, but not two.

Exam attempts and progression rules at University of Split School of Medicine
RuleWhat the faculty's rules sayWhat it means for you
Sittings per course per yearUp to four sittings per course in one academic year (Art. 41 of the 2026 Regulations)First sitting plus three resits, four absolute sittings
Exam periodsRight after each block, then 16 to 31 July, then two periods in SeptemberResits cluster in summer and early autumn
Committee examThe fourth exam period is always held in front of an examination committee (programme guide)Your last chance of the year is a committee sitting
Refusing a passing gradeCounts as one of the four sittings (Art. 39 and 41)Chasing a better grade costs an attempt
After four failed sittingsThe course may be enrolled once more in the next academic year (Art. 41)One extra year for that course, no more
Failing the re-enrolled courseLoss of the right to study in the programme (Art. 41)This is the formal end at Split
ProgressionYear 2 needs 40 ECTS; year 3 needs 100 ECTS and all of year 1; year 4 needs 160 ECTS and all of year 2 (Art. 40)You can move up with some open courses, but they catch up with you a year later
Repeating a yearEach year may be repeated at most once (Art. 17 and 40)A second repeat is not possible
Maximum durationTwice the standard length of the programme (Art. 17)12 years for the six-year degree
Grade complaintWritten complaint to the Dean within one day; a three-member commission re-examines; its grade is final (Art. 38)Act within 24 hours

Two more limits matter. Each year of study may be repeated only once (Articles 17 and 40), and the whole degree must be finished within twice its standard length, so 12 years for the six-year programme. If you disagree with a grade, the written complaint goes to the Dean within one day of the oral exam or the publication of written results; a three-member commission re-examines you within two days, and its grade cannot be appealed (Article 38).

The students who get into trouble in Split are rarely the ones who fail once. They are the ones who carry a year-one block into year two, then hit the 100-ECTS threshold with that block still open, and realise that the September committee sitting now decides two years at once.

What happens if you are dismissed from the University of Split School of Medicine?

If you lose the right to study at the University of Split School of Medicine, usually after failing a re-enrolled course again, you can no longer continue in that programme. Your passed courses, grades and ECTS credits remain valid on your transcript, and a transfer to another university is still possible. The decision can be challenged in an administrative dispute.

The 2026 Regulations list the ways student status ends in Article 15: completion, withdrawal, exclusion under the statute or faculty rules, and not finishing within the legal time limit. Article 41 adds the route that matters most for medical students: losing the right to study after failing a course again in the year it was re-enrolled.

Decisions of this kind are issued by the Dean as a formal ruling, and the faculty's rulings can be taken to an administrative court. Read the ruling carefully, check the dates and the count of your sittings, and keep copies of everything. If something was counted wrongly, act quickly.

The bigger lesson is about timing. The strongest moment to plan a transfer is before the September committee sitting of a re-enrolled course, while you still have active status. A student with active status and one open block is an attractive transfer candidate. Someone who writes to us four months after the ruling still has options, but fewer start dates to choose from.

Losing the right to study in Split ends one programme. It does not end medicine. Students in exactly this situation continue at our partner universities every year.

Which subjects do students fail most at the University of Split School of Medicine?

At the University of Split School of Medicine the subjects students fail most are the big preclinical blocks: anatomy in year one, followed by histology and embryology, biochemistry and physiology in year two, and pathology and pharmacology in years three and four. Block teaching makes them harder, because the exam comes days after an intensive block ends.

Anatomy is the clearest case. The faculty's own anatomy teachers published an analysis of ten years of anatomy results, from 2013/14 to 2022/23, and found that pass rates declined over the decade and that average scores fell in every exam component except the practical part. The anatomy exam in Split combines daily written quizzes during the block, a practical part, a written test and an oral exam. Strong practical work is not enough if the written and oral parts slip.

Histology and embryology is the second wall: slide recognition, development stages, and an exam that rewards weeks of microscope practice. In a block system, those weeks are short.

Biochemistry and physiology in year two decide many careers in Split. Both are large blocks, both demand an understanding of mechanisms rather than lists, and both sit in the year where the 100-ECTS threshold for year three is approaching. A student with anatomy still open is now juggling three heavy subjects at once.

From year three, pathology and pharmacology take over. Pathology mixes specimens, slides and theory; pharmacology tests precise recall. These blocks rarely end a degree on their own, but they often decide whether a student moves up on time.

None of this says anything about your future as a doctor. It says that a specific subject, in a specific format, at a specific pace, did not work this year.

What do students criticise about the University of Split School of Medicine?

Students of the University of Split School of Medicine most often criticise the tuition of €12,000 per year, the pressure of block teaching with exams straight after each block, housing problems during the tourist season, the role of Croatian once clinical work begins, and the organisation of the English programme. These themes recur across student accounts and local media.

Cost. A recurring complaint is the price. €12,000 per academic year for six years is a serious commitment for most families. A repeated year doubles that pain. This is a common reason why a transfer can make sense: our partner universities start from €1,750 per semester.

Block teaching. Students frequently report that the one-block-at-a-time model is intense. The exam follows days after the block, the next block has already started, and a failed exam has to be prepared alongside new material. Students who need more time per subject often struggle with this rhythm. A faculty with a semester structure can suit them better.

Housing and the summer. Split is one of the coastal cities where student rentals are turned into holiday lets in summer, and students have repeatedly reported having to leave their flats in June while exams are still running. With the second exam period in late July and two more in September, resits fall right into the most expensive months. Rents in the centre stay high even outside the peak.

Croatian on the wards. Croatian Language I and II are taught only in years one and two. Students report that from the clinical years, patient conversations at the hospital are mostly in Croatian, and those whose Croatian stayed basic often feel they see less.

Organisation. A recurring theme in student accounts is late communication of schedules and exam dates in a programme with a relatively small English-speaking cohort and teaching spread across several hospital sites.

Each of these is a reason why a transfer can make sense for some students, not a verdict on the school. If one of them is your reason, we help, discreetly and without pressure. To be fair to Split: the faculty has a strong research culture, a modern clinical skills programme from year one and an EU diploma that is recognised automatically throughout the European Union. Many students are very happy there.

Failed exams at the University of Split School of Medicine: what now?

After failed exams at the University of Split School of Medicine, count your sittings first: four per course per year, the fourth in September in front of a committee. Then check the Article 40 credit threshold for your next year. If a block is heading for its committee sitting or has already been re-enrolled, contact us before that sitting, not after it.

Make a simple list: each open block, the sittings used, the ECTS behind it, and the threshold you need for next year. Many students only see during this exercise that one open year-one block will block year three as well.

Then plan both outcomes in parallel. You keep studying for the next sitting in Split. We prepare the second road quietly. A transcript review costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Request an official transcript of records with grades, ECTS credits and course descriptions from the student office. It is the single most important document for your entry year at a partner university, and getting it in August is far easier than in late September.

One failed exam is normal. Three sittings without a pass is a signal. Listen to it early.

Why do students consider a transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine?

Students consider a transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine for five main reasons: a block they cannot pass within four sittings, a looming loss of the right to study, the cost of €12,000 per year plus coastal rents, a long-term goal such as the USMLE, the UK or the Gulf, and personal reasons including language on the wards and distance from home.

The first reason dominates. One subject, often anatomy or biochemistry, in one format, in one rhythm. The block system gives little time to recover before the next subject starts.

The second is money. Another year in Split means another €12,000 in tuition plus rent in a tourist city. Families who compare that with a partner university from €3,500 per year usually do the maths quickly.

The third and fourth are about the future and about life: a career goal outside Croatia, illness, family, a partner at home, or the feeling that the Croatian-speaking clinical years will be a struggle. All valid. None of them is a failure.

How are credits from the University of Split School of Medicine recognised (ECTS)?

Credits from the University of Split School of Medicine are recognised through ECTS. Each block you pass carries a fixed number of credits, about 60 per year. A receiving university compares the content, hours and credits of each passed block with its own curriculum and credits what matches. The more blocks you have passed, the higher your entry year.

Because Split teaches in blocks, the transcript is usually very clear: one subject, one grade, one credit value. That makes comparison easier. Anatomy from Split is matched against anatomy at the receiving faculty in hours, topics and practical parts; if it is equivalent, it is credited, and if it differs slightly a short differential exam may be set.

Comparing systems shows why the European framework helps. In the European Union, ECTS gives every course a value based on roughly 25 to 30 hours of work per credit and 60 credits per year, so a Split transcript is readable by any faculty in the EU and most of Europe. In the United Kingdom, universities use their own credit scale of about 120 credits per year, with two UK credits roughly equal to one ECTS credit, and medical schools there accept very few students into later years, case by case. In the United States, medicine is a graduate degree after a bachelor's degree, progress is counted in semester credit hours, and transfers between medical schools are rare and mostly limited to students already in US programmes. For a student leaving Split, Europe is the natural place to continue.

As a rule of thumb, no more than two exams should be open, and their credits should stay below a maximum. Every case is checked individually. Faculties often place transfer students into high years when the transcript is clean.

Which universities accept transfer students from the University of Split School of Medicine?

Medschool Experts has partner universities in Europe specifically for students who want to continue medicine after leaving the University of Split School of Medicine, including after failed blocks or a loss of the right to study. They teach in English, recognise ECTS from Split block by block and often place transfer students into high years. The right one depends on your transcript and goal.

We do not publish a list, because a list would mislead. A first-year student with anatomy open needs a different faculty from a fourth-year student missing pharmacology. Entry year, open blocks, budget and career plans all change the answer.

Our partner universities are state-accredited and teach Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine in English. We help with the application without loss of time and rescue the career. You receive a concrete recommendation after the free transcript review.

Can I transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine without losing a year?

Often yes. Students leaving the University of Split School of Medicine with a clean transcript and at most two open blocks are regularly placed into the next year or higher. The key is to start while you are still enrolled, ideally before the September committee sitting, so your new place can be confirmed before the academic year begins.

Split's calendar helps here, oddly. The academic year starts on the first Monday in October, the last exam periods run in September, and that leaves a clear window. If we start in spring or early summer, a confirmed place by September is realistic.

Your transcript is the other factor. Two open blocks with modest credits are usually manageable. More open blocks make it harder, though not hopeless. Sometimes a student enters the same year again at the new faculty, but without a repeat fee in Split and without the committee sitting hanging over them. That still saves time compared with repeating.

Can I continue towards the USMLE, the UK or the Gulf after leaving the University of Split School of Medicine?

Yes. A transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine keeps the USMLE, the United Kingdom and the Gulf open. Some of our partner universities have very strong USMLE preparation, with pass rates of up to 100 percent in the last two years, and their degrees are listed in the international directories that licensing bodies rely on.

If the United States is your goal, choose a faculty that builds USMLE-style questions into its own teaching. For the United Kingdom, you need a degree that qualifies you for the UK licensing assessment, which our partner universities provide. For the Gulf states, recognition varies by country, and we check your target country with you before recommending a faculty.

Your goal decides the route. We make sure the transfer points the right way.

The author's view

I started dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia in 2015, at 24. I remember how a single subject could cast a shadow over a whole summer, and how hard it was to study while friends at home sent pictures from the beach. Students in Split live that contrast every July, only with the beach right outside the window.

What I notice about Split is the rhythm. Block after block, exam after exam, and a September in which several committee sittings can fall on the same few weeks. For a student who thrives on focus, it is an excellent system. For a student who needs a little more time with anatomy or biochemistry, the block system can turn one difficult subject into a chain reaction across two years.

My advice: do not wait for the committee. Keep studying for the next sitting, and let us prepare a second road in parallel. If you pass, you have lost nothing. If you do not, you will have a confirmed place instead of an empty autumn.

Frequently Asked Questions about a transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine

Do I need an agency to transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine?

Not legally, but a transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine means matching every block against another curriculum, meeting deadlines and dealing with an unfamiliar faculty. Medschool Experts does this every week, knows which partner universities credit Split blocks generously and keeps you enrolled until the new place is confirmed.

Will I lose a year if I transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine?

Not necessarily. Students from the University of Split School of Medicine with a clean transcript and at most two open blocks are regularly placed into the next year or higher. Starting before the September committee sitting gives the best chance of losing no time.

I failed a year or lost the right to study at the University of Split School of Medicine. Can I still transfer?

Yes. Losing the right to study under Article 41 of the University of Split School of Medicine regulations ends that programme, not your medical career. Your passed blocks and ECTS credits remain valid. Contact us ideally before the final committee sitting.

How many credits or ECTS do I need to transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine?

There is no fixed minimum. Each passed block at the University of Split School of Medicine carries ECTS credits, about 60 per year. As a rule of thumb, no more than two exams should be open and their credits should stay below a maximum. Every case is checked individually.

Which documents do I need from the University of Split School of Medicine?

Mainly an official transcript of records with grades and ECTS, the course descriptions of the University of Split School of Medicine and confirmation of your enrolment status. We tell you exactly what to request after the consultation.

How much does a consultation with Medschool Experts cost?

Nothing. The first consultation and the transcript review are free. You only pay if you accept a placement offer and want us to carry out the transfer.

How many resits does the University of Split School of Medicine allow?

The 2026 Regulations of the University of Split School of Medicine allow up to four sittings per course in one academic year: a first sitting and three resits. The fourth exam period is held in front of an examination committee. Refusing a passing grade also uses up a sitting.

Can I prepare for the USMLE after transferring from the University of Split School of Medicine?

Yes. Some of our partner universities have very strong USMLE preparation, with pass rates of up to 100 percent in the last two years. If the United States is your goal, we choose the faculty with that in mind.

What does a partner university cost compared with the University of Split School of Medicine?

The University of Split School of Medicine charges €12,000 per year for Medical Studies in English in 2026/27. Our partner universities start from €1,750 per semester for Medicine and Dentistry, from €1,500 for Pharmacy and from €3,000 for Veterinary Medicine.

When should I start planning a transfer from the University of Split School of Medicine?

As early as possible, ideally in spring or early summer and before the September committee sitting. A transfer usually takes 4 to 7 months from the first conversation to the start at the new faculty.

Does block teaching at the University of Split School of Medicine affect credit recognition?

Usually it helps. Each block at the University of Split School of Medicine appears on the transcript as one course with one grade and one credit value, which makes it easy for a receiving faculty to compare content and credit it.
