Study Medicine in Split – University of Split School of Medicine

The University of Split School of Medicine was founded in 1997 and, alongside its Croatian-language programmes, offers a six-year English-taught Medicine programme. Clinical training takes place at the University Hospital of Split (KBC Split), one of the largest hospitals in Croatia.

Dean and professors

Prof. Julije Meštrović, MD, PhD, is Dean of the School of Medicine. A paediatrician specialising in paediatric intensive care, he also heads the Department of Paediatrics at KBC Split and has published widely on paediatric emergency and intensive care medicine.

• Prof. Ivica Grković, MD, PhD – neuroscientist and anatomist, former Dean of the School of Medicine in Split and Rector of the University of Split.
• Prof. Joško Božić, MD, PhD – specialist in internal medicine at KBC Split with a research focus on diabetology and endocrinology.
• Prof. Livia Puljak, MD, PhD – professor of anatomy and evidence-based medicine, internationally known for her research on Cochrane systematic reviews and pain medicine.

Accreditations of the University of Split School of Medicine in Croatia

Is the University of Split School of Medicine a state-accredited university? Yes. It is a public medical faculty of Croatia and is accredited by the Croatian Agency for Science and Higher Education (Agencija za znanost i visoko obrazovanje, AZVO), the state authority for the quality assurance of Croatian higher education. The AZVO is registered with the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) and is a full member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA).

The University of Split School of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the internationally recognised directory of medical schools maintained by WFME and FAIMER.

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.

The programme lasts six years and comprises 360 ECTS credits. The first two years are pre-clinical: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology form the foundation, complemented by Croatian courses for everyday life and later patient contact. The clinical phase begins in year three with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry; placements take place mainly at the University Hospital of Split. The sixth year is largely practical and works like a final clinical year.

The tuition fee is 6,000 EUR per semester. Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing, specifying whether accommodation, insurance, and registration fees are included.

Additional one-off costs include the application fee, visa, health insurance, travel, and usually a deposit for accommodation. Budget approx. 650 to 850 EUR per month for living costs.

Split is in Croatia and therefore in the European Union. Degrees from the University of Split School of Medicine fall under Directive 2005/36/EC, so the medical diploma is automatically recognised throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland, without an equivalence assessment or additional examination.

You apply for your licence to practise with the competent authority of the country where you want to work. Most authorities ask for proof of language skills at a professional level, and processing times vary from country to country.

With your licence you can start specialist training on equal terms with graduates of domestic medical schools. The six years in Split, with 360 ECTS credits and English-taught classes, count in the same way whether you continue your career in Croatia or in another EU country.

Split has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters around 5 °C and warm summers averaging 23 °C in August. Split Airport (SPU) lies about 19 kilometres west of the city in Kaštela and offers year-round direct flights to major European hubs such as Frankfurt, plus many seasonal connections across Europe.
