What is Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr) and what does it teach in English?

Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences, in Polish Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy we Wroclawiu, is a public university in Wroclaw, Poland, independent since 17 November 1951. Its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine teaches an English-language Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme of 11 semesters, 5.5 years, worth 360 ECTS, starting in October.

One point of confusion is worth clearing up. UPWr is not Wroclaw Medical University; those are two separate institutions in the same city, and the English-taught veterinary programme in Wroclaw described on our own page is the one at UPWr. The university reported 6,551 students in December 2023 across five faculties, one of which is veterinary medicine. Its veterinary roots reach back to the Lviv Academy of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1881.

How much can a UPWr veterinary student save by transferring?

Tuition at Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences is 20,000 PLN per semester for the English-language veterinary programme, about 9,120 euros per academic year at 1 EUR = 4.38 PLN on 24 September 2026. Against a faculty charging about 2,500 euros a year, the difference is roughly 6,620 euros per year of study.

Run that over the part of the degree you have left. A student with three years still to go saves in the region of 19,900 euros in tuition by moving to a faculty at about 2,500 euros a year, and around 8,800 euros by moving to one at about 5,200 euros a year. Living costs shift the picture too, though less dramatically. A caution on arithmetic. A cheaper faculty that costs you a repeated year is not cheaper. That is why we look at entry year and price together, never separately.

Which year can you enter after leaving UPWr Wroclaw?

There is no fixed ceiling. We frequently achieve high placements, often into year 4 or year 5, and every case is reviewed individually. The aim is always the highest possible entry with no or minimal loss of time. As a rule of thumb, usually no more than two exams may still be outstanding, and their ECTS has to stay below a maximum.

What decides it is your transcript, not your story. Passed subjects, ECTS per subject, and how closely they map onto the target faculty's curriculum. Is a UPWr veterinary degree recognised, and what changes if you transfer?

Poland is a member state of the European Union, so a veterinary degree from UPWr is automatically recognised across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications. A transfer keeps that logic intact as long as the new faculty is in an EU member state. Outside the EU, requirements are set nationally.

Two details are worth knowing. First, the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education keeps a public status list of veterinary establishments, and in the version dated June 2025 Wroclaw appears with the status Approval, dated 2012 with an ECOVE decision in May 2016. Statuses change over time, so we check the current entry for any faculty we propose, together with you. Second, if the United States is the goal, an EU veterinary diploma is a starting point rather than a licence: graduates of faculties not accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association go through the ECFVG or PAVE route before US licensing. For Germany and other EU countries, recognition follows Directive 2005/36/EC and registration is handled by the national veterinary authority.

When should UPWr veterinary students start planning a transfer?

Earlier than most people do.
