Education Loan for MBBS Abroad

Education loan for MBBS abroad: how Indian banks finance medical studies abroad, which documents you need, how collateral and moratorium work and how low tuition fees keep the loan small.

Most Indian families do not pay for a medical degree out of their savings. They combine savings, help from relatives and an education loan. For MBBS abroad this works well, because banks in India finance recognised courses overseas and because the amounts are far smaller than for a private college at home. This guide shows how an education loan for MBBS abroad works and how to keep it as small as possible.

The most effective way to reduce your loan is the choice of university. With tuition of 3,500 € per year in Foča or 6,000 € per year in Niš, the full six years of tuition cost 21,000 € to 36,000 €. Many families finance only the living costs or only part of the tuition.

How an education loan for MBBS abroad works

Public sector banks, private banks and specialised education lenders in India all offer loans for studies abroad. The student is the borrower, and a parent or guardian signs as co-applicant. The bank pays the tuition directly to the university, semester by semester, against the fee demand letter. Living costs are paid into your account in instalments.

  • Covered costs: tuition, hostel or rent, travel, books, laptop, insurance
  • Collateral: public sector banks usually ask for security such as property or fixed deposits for loans above ₹7.5 lakh; some lenders offer unsecured loans at a higher interest rate
  • Margin: for studies abroad many banks expect you to contribute a share of the costs yourself, often around 15%
  • Moratorium: repayment usually starts six to twelve months after the end of the course
  • Tax: interest on an education loan can be deducted under Section 80E of the Income Tax Act for up to eight years

Documents for the education loan

  • Admission letter from the university
  • Fee structure for all six years on university letterhead
  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and NEET scorecard
  • Passport and visa, or proof of the visa application
  • KYC, income proof and bank statements of the co-applicant
  • Property documents if the loan is secured

We provide the admission letter and the official fee structure in the form banks ask for, and we answer questions from your bank about the university and the course.

Five tips to borrow less

  • Compare the total for six years, not the first-year fee
  • Choose a small university town with low rent
  • Apply early and use early bird tuition where partner universities offer it
  • Ask the bank about interest concessions for female students and for secured loans
  • Pay the interest during the course if you can, so it does not add to the principal

Scholarships and other funding

Full scholarships for MBBS abroad are rare, and you should be careful with anyone who promises one. Realistic sources are state government schemes for students from specific communities, trusts and foundations in your home state, and interest subsidy schemes for education loans.
