Study Transfer in Bosnia and Herzegovina: from Sarajevo, Mostar or Banja Luka to a New Location

Σύντομη απάντηση
Studying medicine in Bosnia and the location isn't working out? We arrange the study transfer from Sarajevo, Mostar and Banja Luka to Foča, Niš and more.
Where Can You Study Medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
- University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča — state faculty, human and dental medicine in English, own university hospital, 3,500 EUR per academic year. To the study guide.
- International University of Sarajevo (IUS) — English-language private university with a medical programme. To the location article.
- Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST) — human medicine in English. To the location article.
- University of Mostar — medical faculty with an international programme. To the location article.
In addition, there are the public universities of Sarajevo, Banja Luka and Tuzla, with predominantly instruction in the local language. Which of these places is realistically open to you, and at which point you could join, is something we look at case by case rather than in general terms.
Why Do Students Transfer Within or From Bosnia?
Language and Programme Design
The programmes differ considerably — fully English-language, partly in the local language, public or private. Those who find the design does not fit their plans often find the more suitable faculty within the country itself.
Costs and Structure
The tuition fees between a private university in Sarajevo and the state faculty in Foča differ by several thousand euros per year. Over six years of study, that is a significant difference.
One Subject Becomes a Bottleneck — or Something Changes Personally
Even then, the degree does not have to end. What you have already passed carries weight at the new faculty, and the point of a transfer is to keep as much of it as possible.
How We Handle a Transfer
We deliberately publish no checklists here — what a faculty needs differs from university to university and changes from one year to the next, and a list that is right today quietly stops being right in the spring. What stays the same is that someone has to look at your case personally, and that is what we do.
Send us your certificates, what you have completed so far and the countries you would consider. We go through it and then tell you clearly at which university, in which country, we can place you — and at which point in the programme we can get you in on a schedule you can plan around. Because we work with a large network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, the answer comes from a genuine range of options rather than a single offer. And because you stay enrolled while we plan, nothing is at risk while the question is being answered.
Where Can You Transfer To?
Faculty of Medicine Foča — Transfer Within the Country
One of our core locations. State faculty with its own university hospital, human and dental medicine in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliant accreditation until 2033. 1,750 EUR per semester, i.e. 3,500 EUR per academic year. The practical year can optionally be completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. Since the country remains the same, the residence permit and formalities are simplest here. Transfer students generally enter a high year of study. To the Foča study guide.
University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)
Large public university with its own university hospital, human medicine in English, 360 ECTS, MD degree. 1,500 EUR per quarter, i.e. 6,000 EUR per academic year. To the Niš location article.
MediCampus Europeo, Malta
Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, human medicine in English, Maltese MFHEA licence, English as official language. Entry from the second year onwards, 14,500 EUR per year with single payment. To the Valletta location article.
The complete list of all NC-free options can be found in the Study transfer article on Bulgaria.
How High the Entry Point Turns Out Depends on the Individual Case
All the routes mentioned here are designed to give you the highest possible year placement through us — without, or with minimal, loss of time. In practice that often means entering in the later part of the programme, frequently one of the final two years. How far up it goes in your case only becomes clear once we have looked at what you have completed, and it costs nothing to find out.
What the Transfer Means Financially
Foča, at 3,500 EUR per academic year, is the most affordable location in our entire network; the private universities in Sarajevo are significantly higher. A transfer there noticeably reduces tuition fees over four remaining years of study. Living costs are realistically 450 to 500 EUR per month. Our placement fee is success-based: if no study place is secured, no costs arise for you.
Why You Should Seek Advice as Early as Possible
- Places in the higher years are limited — the earlier we look at your case, the more options are still open.
- Being enrolled is the better starting position — so the conversation is worth having before the next resit, not after it.
- There is nothing to lose: looking at your documents takes us a few days and costs nothing.
Book a free study consultation and we will tell you honestly what is realistic for you — calmly, and without pressure.
The author's view
Foča is the location I know best — we support more German-speaking students there than anywhere else. The combination of a state faculty, its own clinic, English-language instruction and 3,500 EUR per year is unique in this form.
Those who are already studying in Bosnia and find the location does not fit therefore have it easier than most: the transfer stays within the country, the formalities are manageable. Get in touch early — a transfer is a location decision, not a failure.
Conclusion
Bosnia offers excellent opportunities — but no location suits everyone, and a transfer is a location decision, not a failure. Whether Foča, Niš, Malta or somewhere else fits your situation is a question we would rather answer for your case than in general terms.
Send us your certificates, what you have studied so far and the countries you would consider. We will tell you at which university, in which country, we can place you and where we can get you in on a schedule you can plan around, choosing from the largest selection of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. For transfers we always aim for the highest possible entry point, which is frequently one of the final two years.
Initial consultation and document review are free, and the fee is success-based. Book a free study consultation and we will look at your options together.

Frequently Asked Questions about Study Transfer in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Can I switch university within Bosnia?
Yes. That is formally the simplest route, because the country, residence permit and study system remain the same. Foča is one of our core locations for this.
Will I lose study time during the transfer?
As a rule, no, if the transfer is planned in time. What you have already passed carries weight, and we aim for the highest possible entry point for you.
Is the degree recognised in Germany?
Yes, via the oral knowledge examination. Bosnia and Herzegovina remains a third country — since the reform of November 2026, the knowledge examination under Section 3 of the Federal Medical Regulations is the standard route, followed by nationwide approbation. Details can be found in the article Approbation and recognition.
Do I have to give up my current place first?
No. You stay enrolled while we plan the move — that is the safer order, and it is how we handle it.
Which year of study can I enter?
To Foča and Niš typically from the second to fifth year, to Malta from the second year onwards. Where exactly you land depends on your individual case, and we check that for you before anything is decided.
What do I need to bring for a transfer to work?
That depends on your case and on the target university, and it is not the same from one year to the next, which is why we do not publish a general list. Send us your profile and we will tell you at which university, in which country, we can place you and at which point we can get you in.
What does the consultation cost?
Nothing. Initial consultation and document review are free; the fee is only charged upon successful placement.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
- Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
- Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
