Poland has been a member of the European Union since 2004 and offers medicine in English at seven locations, without requiring any numerus clausus. There is also the proximity factor. From Berlin to Wrocław is a single train journey, from Dresden to Katowice a manageable car trip, and those coming from Bavaria can reach Kraków with a short flight.

Seven universities with different profiles

The broadest range of programs is offered by the Wroclaw Medical University in Wrocław: medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine at a state university, with dentistry at 9,000 EUR per semester being the most expensive program among all seven Polish locations. The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice also offers medicine and dentistry and is located in the heart of the Upper Silesian conurbation, with many hospitals for the practical semesters; medicine costs 7,680 EUR per semester there, dentistry 8,010 EUR per semester. In the same city, the private Academy of Silesia (Akademia Śląska) teaches medicine only and scales fees by year of study: 7,200 EUR per semester in the first and second years, 7,950 EUR in the third and fourth, and 8,250 EUR in the fifth and sixth. This scaling should be factored in.

The most affordable option is the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce at 6,250 EUR per semester for medicine. The University of Rzeszów in the southeast charges 7,250 EUR per semester, the Medical University of Bialystok in the northeast 7,550 EUR per semester, and the private Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University in Kraków 7,650 EUR per semester. Among these cities, Kraków is the major student city with an old town, nightlife, and corresponding rents. Białystok and Kielce are quieter, more affordable for everyday life, and have smaller cohorts, which is noticeable in the dissection lab and at the bedside.

Who Poland suits

Poland suits applicants who want to stay close to Central Europe, are comfortable with English as the language of instruction, and are looking for a well-developed hospital network for the clinical years. One limitation should be stated honestly: Polish is a compulsory subject at the medical faculties in Poland, because Polish patients are interviewed and examined on the wards during the clinical semesters. Those who expect to get by exclusively in English for six years will be surprised in the clinical semesters. The language courses run alongside studies and take time alongside anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry.

Κόστος

Πόσο κοστίζουν οι σπουδές ιατρικής εδώ;

Tuition fees in Poland range from 6,250 to 9,000 EUR per semester depending on the university and program. At the lower end is the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce with 6,250 EUR per semester for medicine, i.e., 12,500 EUR per academic year. At the upper end is dentistry at the Wroclaw Medical University in Wrocław with 9,000 EUR per semester, or 18,000 EUR per year. In between are the University of Rzeszów at 7,250 EUR per semester, the Medical University of Bialystok at 7,550 EUR per semester, the Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University at 7,650 EUR per semester, medicine at the Wroclaw Medical University at 7,700 EUR per semester, and the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice at 7,680 EUR per semester for medicine and 8,010 EUR per semester for dentistry.

The Academy of Silesia in Katowice calculates differently. There, a semester costs 7,200 EUR in the first and second year of study, 7,950 EUR in the third and fourth, and 8,250 EUR in the fifth and sixth. Over six years, this adds up more than a fixed semester price.

For living costs, students in Poland should budget approximately 450 to 700 EUR per month. A room in a shared flat in Kielce or Białystok falls at the lower end of this range, a private apartment in Kraków or Wrocław at the upper end. Food, public transport, and leisure are more affordable than in many Western European cities.

A rough estimate for one academic year of medicine at the University of Rzeszów: 14,500 EUR in tuition fees — two semesters at 7,250 EUR — plus approximately 6,600 EUR in living costs for twelve months at around 550 EUR. That comes to approximately 21,100 EUR per year. Books, insurance, dissection tools, and travel are additional. It remains an estimate.

Πώς λειτουργεί η διαδικασία αίτησης;

The academic year at universities in Poland begins in October. Application windows open in spring and run, depending on the university, into the summer — at some locations even longer, as long as places remain available. Those who want to start in autumn should begin preparing the winter before. Earlier is better.

Selection at most Polish universities is via a written entrance examination in biology and chemistry, and at some additionally in physics. Some universities instead assess the grades from the high school diploma or equivalent and conduct a selection interview. Examinations are held in English, at a level corresponding to upper secondary school content. Proof of English proficiency is required as part of the application, usually at B2 level. No prior knowledge of Polish is required for admission. Those who do not pass the entrance examination can continue to apply to other locations in Poland as long as places remain available and the deadline has not passed.

More important than any checklist is the sequence. Which location suits your own profile, which examination is set there, when the deadline really ends, and how long the process from application to enrollment takes — this varies from university to university. Medschool Experts goes through this process in a consultation for each individual applicant, from the selection of the university in Poland through to enrollment, and accompanies the application to the study place.

Medicine and dentistry are among the professions in the European Union that benefit from automatic recognition. The basis for this is the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC. Those who complete their studies at a state-recognized university in Poland listed in Annex V of this Directive have their degree automatically recognized across the EU — without a knowledge examination. This is possible because Poland has been a member of the European Union since 2004.

Contact the competent licensing authority in your target country for specific requirements. Language proficiency, registration steps, and timelines vary by country.

In Switzerland, recognition of a Polish degree is handled by MEBEKO; in Austria, by the Austrian Medical Association. Both procedures are also based on the same EU framework.

The completed degree is distinct from transferring during studies. Those who wish to transfer from a university in Poland to another institution need a place in a higher semester, and these places are scarce. Many students therefore complete their studies at their university in Poland and return for their licensing procedure afterward.

Επιτόπου

Σπουδές και καθημερινή ζωή επιτόπου

Studies in Poland are more structured than at many universities. Seminars and practicals run in fixed small groups, attendance is monitored, and the material is not only examined at the end of the semester but continuously through assessments and oral colloquiums. Anatomy with a dissection course defines the first two years. The pace is tight. Those who let the material slip will find it hard to catch up within the same semester, because the next assessment is already approaching. From the fourth year onward, teaching shifts to the university hospitals, in Wrocław, Katowice, Kraków, Białystok, Kielce, and Rzeszów respectively at the local site. Summer internships are a mandatory component and can be completed on request in other countries as well.

For accommodation, there are two options. University student dormitories are affordable, simply furnished, and fill up quickly; the private market offers more comfort and costs significantly more in Kraków and Wrocław than in Kielce or Białystok. At the start of semester it gets tight, and those who search late pay more.

German-speaking students are not isolated cases at the Polish locations. In Wrocław, Kraków, and Katowice, established groups have formed across cohorts that share past exam papers, housing tips, and ride shares. These networks do not replace preparation, but they take the edge off the first semester. In everyday life, it also helps that prices for food, public transport, and coffee in Kielce, Rzeszów, or Białystok are noticeably lower than in many Western European cities.

Συχνές ερωτήσεις

Συχνές ερωτήσεις σχετικά με τις σπουδές ιατρικής σε αυτή τη χώρα

Do I need a numerus clausus for medical studies in Poland?

No. Universities in Poland do not select students based on a numerus clausus, but rather through an entrance examination in the sciences or through secondary school grades with a subsequent interview. A perfect grade point average is therefore not a prerequisite. Solid knowledge of biology and chemistry as well as good English at school level are, however, genuinely required.

Can I study medicine in German in Poland?

No. All seven locations in Poland teach in English — medicine as well as dentistry in Wrocław and Katowice. Polish is added as a compulsory subject, because Polish patients are interviewed and examined during the clinical semesters. A fully German-language program does not exist at these Polish universities. Those who wish to study in German should ask about other countries in a consultation.

What does a year of medical studies in Poland cost?

Tuition fees in Poland range from 6,250 EUR per semester at the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce to 9,000 EUR per semester for dentistry at the Wroclaw Medical University in Wrocław. Per academic year, that is 12,500 to 18,000 EUR. For living costs, approximately 450 to 700 EUR per month should be added.

Is a medical degree from Poland recognized internationally?

Yes. Poland has been a member of the European Union since 2004, and medicine and dentistry fall under Directive 2005/36/EC. A degree from a state-recognized Polish university listed in Annex V is automatically recognized across the EU — without a knowledge examination. Contact the competent licensing authority in your target country for specific requirements. Language proficiency, registration steps, and timelines vary by country.

Do I need to learn Polish to study in Poland?

Yes, to a limited extent. Subject teaching is conducted in English, but medical faculties in Poland require Polish language courses as a compulsory subject, because Polish patients are treated on the wards. The goal is functional medical Polish for patient history-taking and examinations, not perfect fluency. This part of the studies still takes time, alongside subject examinations.

Can I later transfer from Poland to a university abroad?

A transfer to a higher semester at another university is possible, but places are scarce and highly competitive. Many students therefore complete their studies at their university in Poland and return afterward for their licensing procedure. The Polish degree qualifies them to do so without an additional examination.

How secure is a study place in Poland?

A study place in Poland is only secure once the written acceptance and enrollment at the respective university are confirmed. The number of English-language places is limited per cohort, so early applications have a better standing. Medschool Experts assesses in advance which universities in Poland are realistically suited to your individual profile.
