Study Transfer from Kosovo: Switch to Foča, Niš or Malta

Medicine in Prishtina is taught in Albanian. Study transfer from Kosovo to Foča, Niš or Malta: placement, costs and process.
Which medical faculties exist in Kosovo?
Faculty of Medicine of the University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina” — state institution and the only option for a human medicine degree. In the official programme table of the Kosovar accreditation agency there is exactly one programme, “Mjekësi e Përgjithshme”: 360 ECTS, degree Dr. Med., around 200 places, accredited until 30 September 2027.
The faculty also offers Dentistry (360 ECTS), Pharmacy (300 ECTS), and Physiotherapy and Nursing as bachelor programmes.
There are no private providers with human medicine. UBT offers a Bachelor in Public Health and Medical Sciences with 180 ECTS — this is not a medical degree. No accredited human medicine programme can be verified for Kolleg Rezonanca.
Two common misconceptions
It is not a bachelor’s degree. Portals that write about a “Bachelor’s in Medicine” at the University of Prishtina are mistaken. It is an integrated degree programme with 360 ECTS and the qualification Doktor i Mjekësisë.
It does not run in English. Teaching takes place in Albanian. An English-language medical programme cannot be verified in Kosovo.
A third point regularly causes confusion: the Serbian-language “Faculty of Medicine of the University of Priština with temporary headquarters in Kosovska Mitrovica” appears on the Serbian accreditation list, not the Kosovar one. It teaches in Serbian and is a different institution.
Why do students transfer from Kosovo?
The language. Those coming from German-speaking countries who do not have Albanian at an academic level have no realistic pathway in Prishtina. Even for students from Albanian-speaking families, the step from the family language to medical technical language is considerable.
No WFME framework. The Kosovar agency is listed in the European register EQAR, but is not recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education. The US pathway via ECFMG certification is therefore closed. Beware of advertising claims: Kosovo only appears on the WFME list in connection with the Serbian agency — that is not the same thing.
The limited number of places. Around 200 places per cohort with strong demand.
Recognition itself is regulated — one formality remains. Kosovo is a third country, but this is no longer a disadvantage since the reform of March 2026: from 1 November 2026, the oral knowledge examination under Paragraph 3 of the Federal Medical Licensing Act applies as the standard pathway to nationwide medical licensure. What remains is a documentary peculiarity: Kosovo is not recognized by all EU member states, which can complicate the legalization and certification of documents. You should prepare for this early.
How the study transfer works in five steps
1. Gather documents. Transcript of records with ECTS and grades, study plan, enrolment certificate, school leaving certificate. Allow somewhat more time for legalization and translation in the case of Kosovo.
2. Free initial assessment. We tell you which academic year is realistic.
3. Formal review by the target university. The faculty makes the binding decision.
4. Application and acceptance. Certifications, apostille, translations, deadlines.
5. Enrolment and arrival.

Where you can transfer to
Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina) — one of our core locations, around €3,500 per academic year, English-language programme. Foča generally grants very high year placements.
University of Niš (Serbia) — around €6,000 per academic year, English-language, six years, well-equipped clinical operations.
MediCampus Europeo Malta — around €14,500 per academic year, EU member state. The degree is automatically recognized under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive — and the documentary issues that accompany the Kosovo pathway are eliminated entirely.
How high the year placement turns out depends on the individual case
All three locations enable the highest possible placement with no or minimal loss of time through us. Each case is assessed individually. General rule of thumb: usually no more than two examinations may be outstanding, and the ECTS credits of those examinations must not exceed a maximum. The Kosovar degree programme is cleanly documented at 360 ECTS — this is an advantage for credit recognition.
What the transfer costs
The University of Prishtina does not publicly disclose tuition fees for international students — not even when requested through official calls for applications. Figures from recruitment portals should be avoided without written confirmation.
For comparison: Foča costs €3,500, Niš €6,000, Malta €14,500 per academic year. On top of this come one-off costs for certifications, apostille, and translations, which can be somewhat higher for Kosovo than for other countries of origin.
Why early advice pays off
For Kosovo, the paperwork takes more lead time than elsewhere. Legalization, translations, and the question of which authority accepts which document are more involved here. Those who start only shortly before the application deadline often lose a semester to formalities alone.
The initial consultation is free of charge and non-binding.
The author's view
Kosovo is the case where I have to correct the most misinformation. “Bachelor in Medicine”, “in English”, “WFME-recognized” — none of it is true, and all of it appears on major international portals.
The University of Prishtina itself is not at fault. It runs a properly accredited 360-ECTS degree programme and trains the country’s future medical professionals. It is simply not an international destination and does not aim to be one. Those from Germany who end up there have usually arrived via false information — and the sooner that is corrected, the less it costs.
Summary
- One single accredited human medicine programme: University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina”, 360 ECTS, degree Dr. Med., around 200 places.
- Teaching in Albanian — no English-language programme in the country.
- It is not a bachelor’s degree, despite what portals claim.
- Third country: recognition runs via the oral knowledge examination — since November 2026 the accelerated standard pathway to nationwide medical licensure. Additionally, document legalization is more involved because Kosovo is not recognized by all EU member states.
- Target locations: Foča from €3,500, Niš €6,000, MediCampus Europeo Malta €14,500 per academic year.
Kosovo is a functioning national training institution, but not an international study destination. Those who have started there without Albanian at an academic level should not delay the transfer — the 360 ECTS are cleanly documented and transfer well.

Frequently asked questions about study transfers from Kosovo
Can you study medicine in English in Kosovo?
No. The only accredited human medicine programme at the University of Prishtina is taught in Albanian.
Is the medical degree there a bachelor’s degree?
No. It is an integrated degree programme with 360 ECTS and the qualification Doktor i Mjekësisë. Portals that write about a bachelor’s degree are incorrect.
Are there private medical universities in Kosovo?
None with human medicine. UBT offers a Bachelor in Public Health and Medical Sciences with 180 ECTS — this is not a medical degree.
Is the degree recognized in Germany?
Yes, through the standard recognition procedure for third countries — since the reform of November 2026, this runs via the oral knowledge examination under Paragraph 3 of the Federal Medical Licensing Act as the standard pathway, after which nationwide medical licensure follows. Additionally, expect more effort with legalization and certification because Kosovo is not recognized by all EU member states.
Is Kosovo WFME-recognized?
No. The Kosovar agency is listed in the European register EQAR, but is not recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education. Kosovo only appears on the WFME list in connection with the Serbian agency — that is a different matter.
Will I lose semesters when transferring?
The aim is the highest possible year placement with no or minimal loss of time. The 360 ECTS are cleanly documented, which benefits credit recognition. The decision is made on a case-by-case basis.
What does the consultation cost?
Nothing. The initial assessment is free of charge and non-binding.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
- Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
- Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
- Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
