Studying medicine in Russia and want to switch to Europe? All universities with English-language programmes by region – and how we arrange the transfer.

Russia is the largest provider of English-language medical programmes in the region: around 60 state universities accept international students, and tuition fees range from approximately 2,600 US dollars at small regional universities to 15,300 US dollars at Moscow's top institutions. No country is more strongly represented on international placement portals.

For students who later want to work in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, practical questions arise today — from recognition of the degree to travel and payment routes and the predictability of future years of study. Medschool Experts arranges study transfers to Bosnia, Serbia, Malta and beyond. Passed subjects transfer with you; those who plan ahead generally lose no academic year.

Which universities in Russia offer medicine in English?

This is an overview of institutions offering an English-language medical programme — sorted by region. Virtually all are state institutions; private providers play no role in the English-language medical segment. A transfer from all of them is in principle possible.

Moscow

  • Sechenov University (I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University) — medicine, dentistry, pharmacy; tuition fee 1,300,000 roubles per academic year, approximately 15,300 US dollars.
  • Pirogov University (RNRMU) — medicine 1,200,000 roubles, dentistry 1,300,000 roubles, pharmacy 900,000 roubles per academic year.
  • RUDN University (Peoples' Friendship University) — medicine and dentistry, Institute of Medicine.
  • Yevdokimov University of Medicine and Dentistry (MSUMD)
  • Lomonosov University, Faculty of Fundamental Medicine

Saint Petersburg and the North-West

  • Pavlov University (First Saint Petersburg State Medical University) — medicine optionally in English, dentistry five years.
  • Mechnikov University (North-Western State Medical University) — English-language programme 440,000 roubles per academic year, approximately 5,200 US dollars.
  • Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU) — medicine fully in English.
  • Saint Petersburg State Paediatric Medical University
  • Northern State Medical University, Arkhangelsk
  • Petrozavodsk State University
  • Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, Kaliningrad — important note: the programme runs in Russian, with a preparatory language course. Contrary statements on placement portals are incorrect.

Central Russia

  • Kursk State Medical University — has been enrolling international students since 1994; medicine, dentistry, pharmacy.
  • Ryazan State Medical University (Pavlov) — English-language variant officially offered.
  • Tver State Medical University
  • Smolensk State Medical University
  • Yaroslavl State Medical University
  • Belgorod National Research University
  • Voronezh State Medical University (Burdenko) — medicine, dentistry, paediatrics and pharmacy.
  • Oryol State University, Medical Institute
  • Ivanovo State Medical University
  • Tula State University and Tambov State University

Volga Region

  • Kazan Federal University (KFU) — medicine six years, fully in English, 468,000 roubles per academic year; dentistry five years, but only the first two years in English.
  • Kazan State Medical University (KSMU) — one of the first Russian universities to be accredited by the IAAR in 2019.
  • Bashkir State Medical University, Ufa — medicine and dentistry each 490,080 roubles, pharmacy 279,648 roubles per academic year; approximately 5,000 international students from 64 countries.
  • Orenburg State Medical University
  • Perm State Medical University (Wagner)
  • Samara State Medical University
  • Saratov State Medical University (Razumovsky)
  • Privolzhsky Research Medical University, Nizhny Novgorod (PIMU)
  • Mari State University, Yoshkar-Ola

  • Ulyanovsk State University
  • Izhevsk State Medical Academy, Kirov State Medical University, Mordovia State University (Saransk), Penza State University

Southern Russia and the North Caucasus

  • Volgograd State Medical University — has been enrolling international students since 1962.
  • Rostov State Medical University — medicine in English, dentistry, pharmacy.
  • Kuban State Medical University, Krasnodar
  • Astrakhan State Medical University
  • Stavropol State Medical University
  • North Ossetian State Medical Academy, Vladikavkaz
  • Kabardino-Balkarian State University, Nalchik
  • Dagestan State Medical University, Makhachkala
  • Chechen State University, Grozny — medicine and dentistry.

Urals

  • Ural State Medical University, Yekaterinburg — with a large international student body.
  • Tyumen State Medical University

  • Novosibirsk State Medical University
  • Altai State Medical University, Barnaul
  • Omsk State Medical University
  • Irkutsk State Medical University
  • Kemerovo State Medical University
  • Chita State Medical Academy — at around 320,000 roubles per academic year one of the most affordable options in the country.

Far East

  • Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), Vladivostok — medicine six years, fully in English, 440,000 roubles per academic year (approximately 4,800 US dollars), dormitory approximately 650 US dollars per year.
  • Pacific State Medical University, Vladivostok
  • Far Eastern State Medical University, Khabarovsk
  • Amur State Medical Academy, Blagoveshchensk
  • North-Eastern Federal University Ammosov, Yakutsk

Regarding the universities in Crimea — the Federal University of Simferopol and Sevastopol State University — no reliable statement on recognition can currently be made. They are located in a territory disputed under international law; recognition and payment routes there are particularly uncertain.

What studying in Russia costs

The range is wider than in any other country in the region — between the cheapest and most expensive university the factor is approximately six:

  • Affordable regional universities (Chita, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Ivanovo, Urals): approximately 220,000 to 320,000 roubles per academic year, around 2,600 to 3,800 US dollars.
  • Mid-range (Kursk, Volgograd, Ufa, Kazan, Orenburg, Perm, Vladivostok, Tomsk): approximately 410,000 to 510,000 roubles, around 4,800 to 6,000 US dollars.
  • Moscow's top universities (Sechenov, Pirogov): 900,000 to 1,300,000 roubles, approximately 10,600 to 15,300 US dollars.

Living costs in Moscow and Saint Petersburg are realistically 250 to 450 US dollars per month; in regional cities considerably less. Dormitory places are usually billed annually.

An important note: the fee information on placement portals varies enormously — for the same university you can find figures that differ by more than 50 percent. Only the universities' own information is reliable. Some portals also include the dormitory in the tuition fee, making the figures incomparable.

Why students transfer from Russia to Europe

Accreditation is decided case by case

For Russia, only one accreditation agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education is currently registered: the IAAR, based in Kazakhstan. The only verifiably accredited institution so far is Kazan State Medical University. For all other institutions the addition “WFME approved”, frequently seen on placement portals, cannot be confirmed. We check for you in the initial consultation how your university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and in ANABIN.

Predictability of travel, payment and residence

Flight connections, banking routes and residence formalities have become more cumbersome from the German-speaking world. Over four or five remaining years of study this is a factor to be taken into account soberly.

Language in the clinical phase

Even in English-language programmes, Russian becomes important in patient contact from the third year onwards — at some universities the curriculum even switches entirely at that point. Those who find that this hampers their access to clinical work will find better conditions at a university with fully English-language clinical training.

Recognition is regulated

Russia is not an EU member and therefore remains a third country. Since the March 2026 reform this is no longer a disadvantage: from 1 November 2026 the oral knowledge examination under section 3 of the Federal Medical Licensing Regulations (Bundesärzteordnung) applies as the standard route to a Germany-wide licence to practise. Details are in the article Approbation and Recognition.

How we handle a transfer from Russia

You will not find a checklist of papers or a table of dates on this page, and that is deliberate. What a faculty wants to see differs from university to university and changes from one intake to the next, and no two transfers look alike — a printed list would only mislead you.

What we need to get started is your profile: where you are studying, how far you have come, and which countries you could picture yourself in. We then check individually at which university, in which country, we can place you — and where we can get you in on a timeline you can actually plan around. Because we work with the largest network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, that is usually a choice between several options rather than a single one.

For students transferring, we always look for the highest possible entry point, so that the time you have already invested counts. In many cases that means continuing in one of the final two years of the programme.

Where can you transfer to from Russia?

University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Our core location, for which we hold representation in the German-speaking region. State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliant accreditation until 2033. 3,500 euros per academic year, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. To the Foča study guide.

University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)

Large state university with its own university hospital, medicine in English, 360 ECTS, MD degree. 1,500 euros per quarter, i.e. 6,000 euros per academic year — price-wise comparable to what you know from the Russian mid-range. To the Niš location article.

MediCampus Europeo, Malta

EU location with English as the official language. Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, Maltese MFHEA licence, 14,500 euros per year with a lump-sum payment. To the Valletta location article.

The full list of all NC-free options in Europe can be found in the study transfer article on Bulgaria.

What the transfer means financially

Those studying at a regional university pay less in Russia than in Niš and approximately the same as in Foča. Those enrolled in Moscow pay a multiple of Foča's 3,500 euros at 10,600 to 15,300 US dollars per academic year. Depending on the starting point, price is therefore either a secondary or primary argument for this transfer — in both cases what matters is predictability and the path to later professional practice in Europe. Living costs in Foča and Niš are realistically 450 to 500 euros per month. Our placement fee is success-based.

Why it is worth getting in touch early

  • Places in the higher years are limited. The earlier we know your profile, the more options we can put in front of you.
  • A transfer prepared calmly is the shorter one. Anyone who decides under time pressure usually has fewer universities to choose from.
  • You lose nothing by asking. If we cannot place you well, we say so — that is more use to you than an expensive detour.

Looking at your situation costs you nothing. Book a free study consultation — by phone or video call, together with your parents if you wish.

The author's view

Russian faculties provide solid academic training — that is beyond question. The question I ask everyone who contacts us is a different one: where do you want to work in the end? If the answer is Germany, Austria or Switzerland, it is worth planning the path there early.

A transfer is then not a fallback option, but simply the shorter route to the goal — and the earlier it happens, the less study time it costs.

Summary

Around 60 Russian universities offer an English-language medical programme, and a transfer is possible from all of them. Tuition ranges from roughly 2,600 US dollars at small regional universities to 15,300 in Moscow. Price-wise, Niš is comparable to the Russian mid-range and Foča sits below it — so for most students the decisive argument is not the price but predictability and the route to working in Europe later.

What you will not find on this page is a list of papers or dates. They differ by university and by intake, and the version printed here would be the wrong one by the time you needed it.

Send us your profile instead: where you study, how far you have come, and the countries that would work for you. We look at it individually and tell you at which university, in which country, we can place you and where we can get you in on a timeline you can rely on — from the largest network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. For students transferring we always check the highest possible entry point, often into one of the final two years.

The first conversation is free and the fee is success-based. Book a free study consultation — by phone or video call, with your parents if you wish.

Frequently asked questions about study transfers from Russia

From which Russian universities do you arrange transfers?

From all state faculties with an English-language programme — from Moscow and Saint Petersburg through Kursk, Kazan, Ufa, Volgograd and Rostov to Tomsk, Novosibirsk and Vladivostok.

Is my Russian degree recognised in Germany?

Yes, via the oral knowledge examination. Russia is not an EU member and remains a third country — since the November 2026 reform the knowledge examination under section 3 of the Bundesärzteordnung is the standard route for this, followed by the Germany-wide licence to practise.

My programme was supposed to be in English but runs in Russian — what now?

That does happen. In Kaliningrad the programme is officially in Russian; in Kazan, dentistry switches to Russian after two years. Such cases are a common reason for a transfer — the subjects already passed are retained.

Will I lose study time when transferring?

Generally not, if the transfer is planned in good time. The passed subjects are creditable.

What do you need from me in order to check my options?

Your profile: where you are studying, how far you have got, and which countries would work for you. Which papers a particular faculty asks for differs and changes from year to year, so we tell you that individually once we know your situation — you do not need to collect anything in advance.

Which year of study can I enter?

That depends on your record so far and on the target university, so we check the highest possible entry point for you individually. In many cases a transfer leads into one of the final two years of the programme.

What about the universities in Crimea?

No reliable statement on recognition can be made for Simferopol and Sevastopol. Anyone enrolled there should seek advice particularly early.

Are the tuition fees shown on placement portals accurate?

Frequently not. For the same university you can find figures that differ by more than 50 percent; some portals include the dormitory. Only the university's own figures are reliable.

What does the consultation cost?

Nothing. The initial consultation and the review of your profile are free; the fee is only due upon successful placement.

Swiss-licensed dentist, founder and owner of Medschool Experts

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
