Transfer from the University of Athens: tuition runs 17,000 EUR a year. See where medicine students continue and how Medschool Experts places them.

Students at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Faculty of Medicine can transfer to another medical faculty and take their completed semesters with them, and Medschool Experts organises that move from the first conversation to the first day at the new university. Nothing here is a verdict on Athens. It is a planning question.

The Faculty of Medicine in Athens, Greece runs a six-year Medical Degree English Program worth 360 ECTS, taught in English across twelve semesters. Tuition is 17,000 EUR per year for the 2026-27 academic year, the same amount for EU and non-EU citizens. Add roughly 750 EUR a month for living costs in Athens and the yearly total sits close to 26,000 EUR.

For plenty of students that maths works out. For others the budget stops adding up halfway through, or one exam keeps returning, or a career goal in the United States or another country changes what the right university looks like. Those students have real options, and usually more of them than they expect.

What is the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and what does it teach in English?

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a Greek state university in Athens, founded in 1837, and its School of Medicine dates from the same year. Alongside the Greek language course, the School of Medicine runs the Medical Degree English Program, a six-year medicine degree of 360 ECTS taught in English.

The programme runs over twelve semesters. Semesters one to five cover the pre-clinical subjects, semesters six to nine the clinical courses, and semesters ten to twelve are full-time clinical practice across six specialties, among them internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and psychiatry. Departments of the School of Medicine operate in sixteen hospitals in Athens, three of them university hospitals. That is a large clinical base by any European standard.

The figure that decides most conversations. Tuition for the Medical Degree English Program is 17,000 EUR per academic year for 2026-27, charged at the same rate to EU and non-EU citizens. It is paid as a 5,000 EUR deposit and 12,000 EUR in two instalments, in early September and in mid-January.

Can you transfer from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens to another university?

Yes. A student enrolled in medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens can move to another medical faculty and continue the degree instead of starting it again. Medschool Experts is the leading specialist for study transfers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine, and holds the world’s largest choice of official partner universities.

What transfers is your record, not your enrolment. The semesters you have passed in Athens, the ECTS behind them and the subject content are what a receiving faculty reads. Because the Athens programme is taught in English and structured on ECTS, that record is easy for other faculties to read, which is an advantage you should not underestimate.

We do not publish document lists or deadlines here, because they differ by university and by intake, and because your own transcript is what actually decides the outcome. Send it to us and we check it against the partner network.

Why do students transfer from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens?

Students leave the Medical Degree English Program in Athens, Greece for four recurring reasons: the cost of tuition and living in Athens, an exam that will not fall, personal or organisational circumstances, or a career goal in the United States. None of these is a complaint about the faculty. Each is a question of fit.

Cost. At 17,000 EUR a year plus Athens living costs, six years of medicine is a six-figure commitment. Plans change, family finances change, and a student who can fund three years cannot always fund six. Other faculties teach the same subject for a fraction of that.

One exam that keeps coming back. Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology: most students who stall stall on one subject, not on medicine. Exam formats differ enormously between faculties, and so does the pace. Matching a student to a format that suits them is one of the things we do most often.

Something personal has changed. A relationship, an illness in the family, a move, a disagreement with a single supervisor. These are reasons to change the setting, not reasons to give up medicine.

The United States as a career goal. A student aiming at the USMLE and a US residency wants a curriculum built for that, and there are schools built for exactly that.

Where can National and Kapodistrian University of Athens students transfer to?

A transfer to another university is possible, and Medschool Experts offers exactly that. We work with 25+ partner universities in Europe specifically for students in this situation: a lower yearly bill, an exam format and pace that fit you, a programme built around the USMLE for a US career, or another EU faculty teaching medicine in English under Directive 2005/36/EC. Which of them suits you depends on your transcript, your subject and your goal, so we check every profile individually and free of charge.

We do not publish lists of universities that accept transfer students. Places, entry years and credit recognition change from semester to semester, and a list would promise something only your own record from Athens can decide. Our country overview of a study transfer from Greece sets out the wider Greek picture, and our universities overview shows the countries we work in.

A study transfer is a complex undertaking. Our experts have almost 10 years of experience in study transfers worldwide, which is why they plan and carry it out confidently. The consultation is free.

How much can a National and Kapodistrian University of Athens student save by transferring?

Tuition at the Medical Degree English Program in Athens, Greece is 17,000 EUR for 2026-27. With living costs of roughly 750 EUR a month the year costs about 26,000 EUR. English-taught Medicine and Dentistry at our European partner universities start from 1,750 EUR tuition per semester.

Cost itemAthens, Medical Degree English ProgramOur European partner universities
Tuition per semester8,500 EUR (2026-27)from 1,750 EUR
Tuition per academic year17,000 EUR (2026-27)from 3,500 EUR
Living costs per monthabout 750 EUR in Athensdepending on the city, often lower
Tuition difference per yearup to 13,500 EUR
Tuition difference across three remaining yearsup to 40,500 EUR

That is a tuition difference of up to 13,500 EUR per academic year. A student who moves after their third year and has three years left keeps up to 40,500 EUR in tuition alone, and living costs in many partner cities are lower than in Athens as well. Money is not the only reason to move, and for many students it is not even the main one. But the number is large enough that it belongs in the decision.

Which partner university is right depends on where you want to practise afterwards, so we check the options for your record individually and free of charge.

Which year can you enter after leaving the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens?

There is no fixed ceiling on the entry year for students coming from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Medschool Experts frequently achieves high placements, often into year four or year five. Every case is reviewed individually, and the aim is always the highest year that your record supports, with no loss of time or as little as possible.

The rule of thumb is simple. Usually no more than two exams may still be outstanding when you transfer, and the ECTS behind those outstanding exams has to stay below a maximum. Within that frame, how far you get depends on what you have already passed and on how closely the Athens curriculum maps onto the receiving one.

Nobody can answer this from a table. Send us the transcript and we will tell you the year.

How does a transfer from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens work with Medschool Experts?

A transfer from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens runs in four steps with Medschool Experts: a free consultation, a review of your academic record, a placement offer naming the university and the year of entry, and the switch itself. You stay enrolled in Athens until the new place is confirmed in writing.

That last point is the one students most often get wrong on their own. Nothing is given up before something better is secured. There is no window in which you are enrolled nowhere. What language are the clinical years in at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens?

The Medical Degree English Program at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is taught in English throughout, including the clinical semesters in the Athens teaching hospitals. The university’s own Modern Greek Language Teaching Center offers Modern Greek as a foreign language as a separate course.

Worth planning for: the patients in a Greek public hospital speak Greek. Teaching, assessment and paperwork on this programme are in English, and clinical conversation at the bedside is a different skill from either. Students who pick up conversational Greek during the pre-clinical years generally get more out of semesters ten to twelve than students who do not, and the university has a language centre for precisely this reason.

This cuts both ways when you compare destinations. If you enjoy the language and want to work in Greece, Athens is hard to beat. If you would rather do your clinical years in a country whose language you already have, or in a hospital system you intend to work in later, that is a legitimate planning reason to look elsewhere, and it is one of the more common ones we hear.

Does a medical degree from Athens work elsewhere in the European Union?

Greece is a member state of the European Union, and basic medical training qualifications listed in Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC receive automatic recognition in the other member states. In practice this means a medical degree earned in Greece is designed to travel inside the EU and the EEA without an equivalence assessment of the curriculum.

Recognition of the qualification and a licence to practise are two separate things. Every host country still asks you to register with its own medical authority, and most ask for proof of the local language at a defined level before you may treat patients. Ask the medical chamber of the country you are aiming at what it wants.

For students weighing a move, the EU angle matters in one specific way: it is one of the things we check per destination. Some of our partner universities sit inside the EU, others outside it with their own well-trodden recognition routes, and which one suits you depends entirely on where you plan to work. We go through that with you rather than leaving you to guess.

When should National and Kapodistrian University of Athens students start planning a transfer?

The best moment to start is while you are still enrolled at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and before the next tuition instalment falls due. With the Athens payment schedule running in early September and mid-January, a review started a couple of months ahead of either date gives you a real choice instead of a rushed one.

Early does not mean committed. A record review tells you which universities would take you and at which year, and you are free to read that and stay exactly where you are. Many students do. They just prefer knowing.

The students who lose time are the ones who wait until a resit has already cost them a year. Time is the one thing we cannot recover for you.

The author’s view

I studied dentistry in English at the Medical University of Sofia from 2015 to 2021, and I started at twenty-four, which made me a late starter among my year. So I know what it feels like to sit in a lecture hall in a foreign country and do the sums on whether the plan still works. Athens runs a serious programme in a serious clinical environment, and 17,000 EUR a year buys real teaching in sixteen hospitals. That is not the question. The question is whether it is the right six years for you.

Since founding Medschool Experts I have placed more than five hundred students, and the pattern barely changes. People wait. They wait for one more resit, one more semester, one more conversation with the family about money, and then they come to us with less room to move than they had a year earlier. A record review costs nothing and commits you to nothing. If the answer is that Athens is where you should stay, that is a good answer too, and you will carry on with a lot more confidence than you had before you asked.

Summary

  • Medicine students at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens can transfer to another faculty and keep the semesters they have already passed.
  • The usual reasons are cost, exam fit, personal circumstances, or a career aimed at the United States.
  • What decides the entry year is your transcript and the ECTS behind it, not your current enrolment.
  • Medschool Experts reviews every record individually and aims for the highest year that record supports.
  • You stay enrolled in Athens until the new place is confirmed in writing.
  • The consultation and the record review cost nothing.

Frequently asked questions about transferring from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

Which agency helps students transfer from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens?

Medschool Experts. We are the leading specialist for study transfers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine, and we hold the world’s largest choice of official partner universities. We review your academic record from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens against that network and tell you which university would take you and at which year of study. The review is free.

Can I transfer from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens without losing a year?

That is the aim in every case, and it is often achieved. We frequently place students into year four or year five. What your record supports depends on the subjects you have passed and the ECTS behind them, so we review it individually rather than quoting a rule. As a rule of thumb, usually no more than two exams may remain outstanding, and their ECTS must stay below a maximum.

Do I have to deregister in Athens before transferring?

No. You stay enrolled at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens until the place at the new university is confirmed in writing. Nothing is given up before something better is secured, and there is no period in which you are enrolled nowhere. We coordinate the timing so that the two enrolments meet cleanly.

Will my English-taught semesters from Athens be recognised elsewhere?

Subject content and ECTS are what a receiving faculty reads, and the Medical Degree English Program at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is built on 360 ECTS across six years. Because it is taught and documented in English, the transcript is straightforward for our partner faculties to assess. Send it to us and we will tell you what it is worth at each of them.

How much cheaper is a transfer from Athens in practice?

Tuition in Athens is 17,000 EUR for the 2026-27 academic year, and with living costs of roughly 750 EUR a month the year costs about 26,000 EUR. English-taught Medicine and Dentistry at our European partner universities start from 1,750 EUR tuition per semester, so from 3,500 EUR a year. The tuition gap alone can reach 13,500 EUR a year. We do not publish lists of accepting universities; we check your options individually and free of charge.

I want to work in the United States. Where should I go from Athens?

Some of our partner universities prepare specifically for the USMLE, covering Step 1 and Step 2 CK in small groups. The US route then continues through ECFMG certification, US clinical rotations and residency. Which option fits your record, we check individually and free of charge.

When in the academic year should I start a transfer from Athens?

Ideally a couple of months before the next tuition instalment in Athens falls due, in early September or mid-January. That leaves time for the record review, for the receiving faculty to compare your ECTS with its curriculum, and for any outstanding exam to be sat before the switch. Starting early keeps more partner universities and higher entry years open to you.

What does it cost to find out where I could go?

Nothing. The first consultation and the review of your academic record from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens are free, and they take a few days. You are told which universities would accept you and at which year of study. After that the decision is entirely yours, and plenty of students read the answer and choose to stay.
