The Czech Republic has been part of the European Union since 2004 and trains medical professionals in English at four locations, without requiring a numerus clausus. Three of these four faculties belong to Charles University, which was founded in Prague in 1348 and is the oldest university in Central Europe. The distances are short. From many Central European cities you can reach Prague or Pilsen in a morning without boarding a plane.

Four Faculties, Four Different Profiles

The Second Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague teaches exclusively human medicine and is affiliated with Motol University Hospital, the largest hospital in the Czech Republic. At 8,675 EUR per semester, Prague is the most expensive of the four locations, and it also has the highest rents in the country. The Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Pilsen charges 8,064 EUR per semester and makes no distinction between human medicine and dentistry, making it the most affordable route for prospective dental students in the Czech Republic. Pilsen is also closer to the Western European border than any other medical location in the country. In Hradec Králové, also part of Charles University, human medicine costs 8,150 EUR per semester and dentistry 8,400 EUR per semester; the city in East Bohemia is manageable in size, and student life revolves around the faculty, the university hospital, and the old town.

Brno is the outlier. Masaryk University is the second largest university in the Czech Republic; its Faculty of Medicine offers human medicine and dentistry and is, at 7,852 EUR per semester for human medicine and 8,265 EUR per semester for dentistry, the most affordable location in the country. Brno has a high student population, short distances, and living costs below the Prague level.

Who the Czech Republic Is Right For

The Czech Republic suits applicants who are looking for a short journey, a long academic tradition, and an English-language curriculum at a state university. One challenge must be named clearly: the entrance examinations at Charles University and Masaryk University are written, cover biology, chemistry, and physics, and are rarely passed without preparation. Czech also comes as a mandatory subject, because students treat Czech patients on the wards.

Κόστος

Πόσο κοστίζουν οι σπουδές ιατρικής εδώ;

Tuition fees in the Czech Republic range between 7,852 and 8,675 EUR per semester, which is a narrower spread than in many other countries. The most affordable option is human medicine at Masaryk University in Brno at 7,852 EUR per semester, which amounts to 15,704 EUR per academic year; dentistry there costs 8,265 EUR per semester. The Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Pilsen charges 8,064 EUR per semester for both human medicine and dentistry. In Hradec Králové, Charles University charges 8,150 EUR per semester for human medicine and 8,400 EUR per semester for dentistry. At the top end is the Second Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague at 8,675 EUR per semester, that is 17,350 EUR per academic year.

The gap is smaller than it looks. Between the cheapest and most expensive location in the Czech Republic, the difference over six years of study amounts to just under 10,000 EUR, which a single year of higher rent in Prague can already offset.

For living costs, students in the Czech Republic should budget approximately 500 to 800 EUR per month. In Prague, just a room in a shared apartment can fall at the upper end of this range, while in Hradec Králové, Pilsen, or Brno the same budget goes noticeably further. University dormitory places are cheaper than the open market and are therefore allocated quickly.

A rough estimate for one academic year of human medicine at Masaryk University in Brno: 15,704 EUR in tuition fees — two semesters at 7,852 EUR each — plus around 7,200 EUR in living costs at approximately 600 EUR per month. Together that is roughly 22,900 EUR per year. Books, insurance, and travel home come on top. It remains an estimate.

Αίτηση

Πώς λειτουργεί η διαδικασία αίτησης;

The academic year at Czech universities begins in September or October. Application windows open in winter or spring beforehand, with deadlines ranging from spring to summer depending on the faculty. Anyone wanting to start in autumn should plan about a year ahead. This pays off because exam dates at the faculties in the Czech Republic sometimes fall close together, allowing multiple applications to run in parallel.

Selection at all four locations in the Czech Republic is based on a written entrance examination. Biology, chemistry, and physics are tested in English, at the level of upper secondary school, typically in a multiple-choice format. Some faculties also invite applicants to a short interview. Proof of English proficiency is part of the application, usually at B2 level. Knowledge of Czech is not required for admission; the mandatory course begins once studies are underway. The academic year starts once a year; a start in a spring semester is not provided for at the medical faculties in the Czech Republic.

The examination is the real bottleneck. Preparation makes the difference. Anyone who prepares specifically in biology and chemistry has good chances; anyone who walks into the exam room without practice generally does not. Dates, deadlines, exam content, and the question of which of the four faculties in the Czech Republic best matches your profile differ from location to location. Medschool Experts goes through this process in an advising session for each individual applicant and supports the application from university selection through to enrollment.

Αναγνώριση

Αναγνωρίζεται το πτυχίο διεθνώς;

Human medicine and dentistry in the European Union are regulated under the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC. Anyone who completes their studies at a state-recognized university in the Czech Republic listed in Annex V of this directive receives automatic EU recognition of their degree — no knowledge test and no aptitude test required. The basis for this is the Czech Republic's EU membership since 2004.

Contact the competent licensing authority in your target country for specific requirements. Language proficiency, registration steps, and timelines vary by country.

For Switzerland, recognition of a Czech degree runs through MEBEKO; for Austria, through the Austrian Medical Association.

Επιτόπου

Σπουδές και καθημερινή ζωή επιτόπου

Medical studies in the Czech Republic are structured and densely scheduled. Practical placements and seminars run in fixed groups with mandatory attendance; assessment is continuous through tests during the semester and oral exams at the end of semester. Anatomy with dissection, histology, and biochemistry dominate the early years; from the fourth year onward, instruction shifts to the wards — at Motol University Hospital in Prague, and at the respective university hospitals in Brno, Pilsen, and Hradec Králové. Summer placements are a fixed part of the curriculum and can, by arrangement, also be completed in other countries.

When it comes to accommodation, the city matters most. Prague is expensive and the market moves fast; Brno is more affordable; Pilsen and Hradec Králové are comparatively relaxed. Dormitories at Charles University and Masaryk University are the budget option, though simply furnished. Anyone looking for a private room in the center of Prague should start early and expect prices comparable to major Western European cities.

International students are present at all four locations in the Czech Republic, particularly in Prague and Pilsen due to their proximity to Western Europe. Past exam papers, notes, and accommodation tips are passed on through the year groups. That helps. It cannot replace daily work on the material, however — the examination schedule in the Czech Republic is too rigorous for that. Outside the faculty, food, public transport, and leisure are cheaper in Brno, Pilsen, and Hradec Králové than in Prague, which noticeably eases the monthly budget.

Συχνές ερωτήσεις

Συχνές ερωτήσεις σχετικά με τις σπουδές ιατρικής σε αυτή τη χώρα

Do I need a numerus clausus for medical studies in the Czech Republic?

No. Universities in the Czech Republic select their students through a written entrance examination in biology, chemistry, and physics — not based on a high school diploma grade. The school leaving grade plays practically no role in admission. What matters is how well you perform in this exam, and that can be specifically prepared for.

Can I study medicine in German in the Czech Republic?

No. All four locations in the Czech Republic — Charles University in Prague, Pilsen, and Hradec Králové, as well as Masaryk University in Brno — teach their international programs in English. Czech comes as a mandatory subject for patient communication. Those who wish to study in German should ask about other countries in an advising session.

How much does a medical degree in the Czech Republic cost per year?

Tuition fees in the Czech Republic range from 7,852 EUR per semester for human medicine at Masaryk University in Brno to 8,675 EUR per semester at the Second Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague. Per academic year, that is approximately 15,700 to 17,400 EUR. Living costs of around 500 to 800 EUR per month come on top.

Is a medical degree from the Czech Republic recognized within the EU?

Yes. The Czech Republic has been an EU member since 2004, and human medicine and dentistry fall under Directive 2005/36/EC. The degree from a state-recognized Czech university listed in Annex V is automatically recognized within the EU — no knowledge or aptitude test required. Contact the competent licensing authority in your target country for specific registration requirements.

How difficult is the entrance examination in the Czech Republic?

The entrance examinations at Charles University and Masaryk University are written and cover biology, chemistry, and physics in English. The content corresponds to upper secondary school level, the scope is broad, and the time is limited. With targeted preparation over several months, the examination can be passed; going in without practice typically results in failure.

Is it possible to transfer from the Czech Republic to a university in another country?

A transfer into a higher semester at another university is possible, but places are rare and sought after. Most students therefore complete their degree at their university in the Czech Republic and only return afterward. The Czech degree entitles them to do so without an additional examination.

How secure is the study place in the Czech Republic?

A study place in the Czech Republic is only secure once the entrance examination has been passed, written admission has been granted, and enrollment has taken place. The number of English-language places is limited per intake year. Medschool Experts assesses in advance how realistic the chances are at each individual faculty and includes alternatives in the planning.
