Doctorate in Medicine in Morocco

The Moroccan doctorate in medicine is the qualification awarded by a faculty of medicine and pharmacy at the end of the full medical curriculum. It follows the preclinical and clinical years, the hospital internship and the defence of a thesis, and it is the academic condition for registering as a physician in Morocco.

From Latin doctor, teacher, and doctoratus; in the French academic tradition the doctorat en médecine designates the professional qualification concluded by the defence of a thesis.

What the qualification covers

The Moroccan doctorate in medicine is a professional doctorate, not a research degree. It is awarded by a faculty of medicine and pharmacy once the student has completed the preclinical sciences, the clinical rotations and the hospital internship years, passed the required examinations and publicly defended a thesis. The diploma certifies general medical competence. It does not by itself confer a specialty, which is acquired afterwards through the résidanat, nor does it by itself authorise practice, which requires registration with the Ordre National des Médecins.

From a European degree to the Moroccan doctorate

A Moroccan student who graduates from a European faculty holds a European medical qualification, not the Moroccan doctorate. The two are brought together through recognition of the foreign diploma, a procedure in which the competent authorities compare the duration of the programme, its content and the clinical training completed with the Moroccan reference curriculum. Recognition does not transform the foreign diploma into a Moroccan one; it establishes that it is equivalent for the purposes of professional access. Graduates are usually asked to provide legalised documents, and depending on the country of issue this is done by apostille or through consular channels.

If you intend to practise in France

For practice in France, what matters is where the diploma was issued. A medical degree obtained in a member state of the European Union is assessed under Directive 2005/36/EC, which sets minimum training requirements for basic medical education. A Moroccan doctorate, in contrast, is a third-country qualification, and its holder is treated as a practitioner holding a diploma from outside the European Union. Access to practice then runs through the authorisation procedure, which includes the knowledge verification tests and a supervised period of practice.

Practical advice during your studies

Whichever direction you take afterwards, the documentation of your training is what carries the recognition file. Keep the official transcripts for every year, the detailed syllabus or course descriptions, the certificates for each clinical rotation with the number of weeks completed, and the thesis with its defence record. Request certified copies and, where needed, sworn translations while you are still on site, since obtaining them later from abroad is slower. This applies equally to those who plan to return home and to those who aim to practise in France.
