Residency Training in Algeria

The résidanat is the Algerian specialist training pathway that follows the doctorate in medicine. Access is through a national competitive examination, and training takes place in university hospital departments under supervision. The duration depends on the specialty, and completion leads to the national qualification as a specialist.

From French résident, one who resides, designating the physician in training attached to a hospital department; the Maghreb usage résidanat names the training period itself.

How the pathway is organised

After the medical degree awarded at the end of medical studies in Algeria, a physician who wishes to specialise sits the national competitive examination for the résidanat. Candidates are ranked, and the specialties and locations available depend on the posts opened for the year. Training then takes place in hospital departments attached to a faculty of medicine, under the responsibility of senior physicians, and combines clinical work, on-call duties, theoretical teaching and regular assessment. The length of training depends on the specialty, and its completion leads to the national specialist qualification.

Applying with a European degree

A physician holding a European medical degree does not enter the competition on the strength of the diploma alone. The qualification must first go through recognition, which is what places a foreign title on the same footing as the national one for purposes of access. The eligibility conditions, the documents required and the calendar are set for each session by the competent authorities and should be checked for the year concerned. Registration with the national medical council is the parallel step that governs practice itself, and it likewise rests on the recognition decision.

Specialising in Europe and returning afterwards

The alternative is to complete specialist training in the European country of study and to return as an already qualified specialist. In that case, two titles rather than one have to be documented and recognised: the basic medical degree and the specialist qualification. This makes the quality of the file decisive, in particular the certificates covering the specialist years, the logbook of procedures where the training country uses one, and the document naming the specialty in its official form. Both routes are used in practice, and the choice usually follows from where you intend to build your career, as described under returning home after studying in Europe.

Obligations and the French comparison

Rules attaching obligations of public service to certain categories of physicians exist in Algeria and are set nationally; they change over time and should be verified with the competent authorities rather than assumed from earlier accounts. In France, specialist training is reached through a national ranking examination and a third cycle in hospital posts; for a holder of a diploma issued outside the European Union, access is linked to the authorisation procedure and to the status of practitioner with a non-EU diploma, and must be examined individually.
