What is Cyprus International University and which health programmes does it teach in English?

Cyprus International University is a private university founded in 1997 in Nicosia (Lefkoşa), in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. According to its own website in 2026, it has more than 14,000 students from 110 countries and over 100 degree programmes. Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy are all taught in English.

The campus lies on the edge of the city, in the area Cyprus Mail calls Mia Milia (Haspolat). CIU lists itself in the Times Higher Education 2026 ranking in the 601–800 band. It is regulated by YÖDAK, the Northern Cypriot higher education council, and is also a member institution of YÖK, Turkey’s Council of Higher Education.

Medicine is organised differently. Years 1 to 3 run on the Nicosia campus. For years 4, 5 and 6, CIU states that students continue at Başkent University’s Dr. Turgut Noyan Application and Research Center in Adana, Turkey. Dentistry began teaching in the 2019–20 academic year and uses the university’s own Oral and Dental Health Application and Research Center for the clinical years. The Faculty of Pharmacy opened in 2011–12.

The accreditations in the right-hand column are real and useful. They do not replace the decision of a national authority in your home country. That decision is the one now in question.

Is a degree from Cyprus International University recognised in 2026?

A medical, dental or pharmacy degree from Cyprus International University is recognised in Turkey, but in 2026 recognition elsewhere depends on your country. Morocco has frozen equivalence since May 2024. Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE were reported in 2020 as no longer recognising Northern Cypriot institutions.

The root cause is status. Only Turkey recognises the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a state, and UN Security Council Resolution 541 of 1983 called its declaration of independence legally invalid. A university can meet every academic standard and still issue a diploma that a foreign ministry will not accept.

That 2020 list comes from Cyprus Today. The ACEI, a US credential evaluation service, summed up the position in June 2026: recognition “varies by country and institution”.

Two more points matter for CIU students. First, the automatic EU recognition of medical degrees under Directive 2005/36/EC covers degrees from EU member states; Northern Cyprus is not treated as one. Second, the Republic of Cyprus in the south is an EU member with its own universities. It is a different case.

What does Morocco’s freeze mean for Cyprus International University students?

For Moroccan students at Cyprus International University, the freeze means that a Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy degree finished in Nicosia cannot currently be declared equivalent in Morocco. Equivalence has been suspended since May 2024, and by July 2026 no solution had been announced.

CIU is closely tied to the protest movement. Cyprus Mail reported in April 2026 that the coordinator of the committee of students, graduates and parents studied pharmacy at Cyprus International University; Yabiladi (July 2026) names him as Achraf Khettab. According to his account in the press, the freeze began with a letter from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Ministry of Higher Education.

The numbers are large. Morocco World News (March 2026) put the group at about 3,500 students and graduates, and Yabiladi (July 2026) at nearly 3,000. Protests took place in Rabat in March 2026 and outside parliament on 22 April 2026, followed by a sit-in in July 2026. Yabiladi also reported talks about a solution that month.

Talks are not a decree. Nobody can say which rules will apply when today’s first-year students graduate.

What does the recognition problem mean for CIU medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students?

For CIU students in the health sciences, the recognition problem is sharper than for most other fields, because medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are regulated professions. Without an accepted degree, a graduate cannot register or work in those professions at home.

The CIU structure adds a practical angle. Medical students already change location after year 3, when their clinical years move to Adana. That makes the end of year 3 a natural moment to ask where the clinical years should take place.

Dental students face the step from preclinical to clinical work after year 3 as well. Pharmacy students collect internship periods in years 1 to 5. In each case, completed and documented coursework is the currency a receiving university looks at.

Timing matters. Each semester you complete is one more to be assessed.

Can you transfer from Cyprus International University to another university in Europe?

Yes. Students of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy at Cyprus International University can apply to transfer to universities in Europe whose degrees their home country accepts. Why are Serbia and Bosnia no longer an option for CIU students?

What does it cost to stay at Cyprus International University and wait?

Staying at Cyprus International University while waiting for a political decision costs every remaining year of tuition, plus living costs, with no guarantee that the degree will be accepted at the end. For a CIU medicine student, that can mean tens of thousands of euros.

CIU states that all international undergraduates receive a 50% tuition scholarship, and it sets fees at the start of each academic year through an online fee calculator. For 2026–27, education portals quote CIU Medicine at about €15,300 a year before the scholarship and about €7,400 after it. The worked example below uses €7,500.

Students at Cyprus International University should act now if their home country has frozen or ended recognition, if they plan to work in a country that reviews Northern Cyprus degrees case by case, or if they are close to the clinical years of Medicine or Dentistry.

• Students from Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE, given the 2020 reports.
• Medicine students in years 2 and 3, before the move to the clinical years in Adana.
• Dental students before the clinical years 4 and 5.
