Who Is Georgia Suitable For?

Georgia is particularly attractive for international applicants from non-EU countries. Students from Iran, Asian or African countries who are pursuing an English-language degree and want to practise in their home country or internationally afterwards will find a solid environment at reasonable costs in Georgia.

For German applicants, there is an important caveat: since Georgia is not part of the EU, automatic recognition under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC) does not apply. The path to German Approbation runs through the equivalence review under § 3 BÄO – a viable route, but one that requires active planning and individual advice. Anyone of German origin aiming for an Approbation in Germany should discuss this fork in the road before enrolling.

Recognition Status in Germany

Georgia is not a member of the European Union. This means: a medical degree obtained in Georgia is not automatically recognised in Germany under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC).

The path to German Approbation runs through the equivalence review under § 3 BÄO by the licensing authority. Where equivalence is not established, a knowledge examination or an adaptation measure may be required; the Approbation follows on from that. This route works – but it wants to be planned for, and planned for early. That is one of the points we go through with German applicants before they decide on a country.

The medical programme at both partner institutions in Tbilisi is structured as a six-year full-time degree. The structure follows international standards:

This listing is a prerequisite for ECFMG certification – an important step for graduates seeking admission in the USA or Canada. The programmes are aligned to international academic standards and are regularly accredited. Instruction takes place in English throughout; basic Georgian can be useful in clinical day-to-day life and most students pick it up as they go.

Since a Georgian medical degree is not an EU degree, the rules of the target country apply in each case:

• Home country (non-EU): For many international students from non-EU countries, the goal is Approbation or licensing in their home country. The WFME listing of the Georgian partner universities greatly facilitates this process in many countries.
