Can you study medicine with a vocational high school diploma?

Yes. To study medicine at a German faculty, the general higher-education entrance qualification (Abitur) is required, and the vocational diploma alone does not meet that admission requirement. At the partner universities of Medschool Experts in Slovakia and Bosnia, by contrast, no school-leaving grade decides admission; what counts is an entrance examination in the sciences. Starting your studies there is usually possible as early as the coming semester.

The vocational diploma is an admission rule, not a verdict on whether someone will make a good doctor or dentist. The question is therefore wrongly framed when it runs: is my certificate good enough? The right question is: at which university is my certificate good enough?

Where can you study medicine without an NC with a vocational diploma?

At the partner universities of Medschool Experts in Slovakia and Bosnia, no school-leaving grade decides admission. What is decisive is an entrance examination in the sciences – in other words, exactly the kind of thing you can study for and prepare. There is no numerus clausus in the German sense there.

Tuition fees start at EUR 1,750 per semester. The degree takes six years, is taught in English – the technical language of medicine – and leads to full qualification as a doctor.

Which of the two locations fits your documents depends on details: on the type of vocational diploma you hold, on the science subjects you took, on any apprenticeship you completed. What can you do when your school-leaving grade is fixed and will not change?

A number on a certificate that can no longer be moved feels like a closed door. This is the point at which most people stop looking.

I did not start on the direct route myself. I first studied something completely different and then went to Sofia, where I studied dentistry from 2015 to 2021. The detour cost me nothing but time. And time is exactly what can be saved.

Is it worth completing the Abitur afterwards?

The general higher-education entrance qualification can be obtained later on the basis of a vocational diploma, for instance through an evening school, a college or a vocational upper secondary school. That is a clean route which keeps every door open. But it costs two to three years – and only then does the application begin.

The solution: the two options can be weighed against each other in figures rather than felt. Someone who starts abroad at 20 finishes at 26. Someone who first spends three years catching up and then applies is doing a different sum. We work that calculation out together in the free consultation – open-ended, and with your numbers.

What is a medical degree from Slovakia or Bosnia worth?

Slovakia is an EU member state. A degree in human medicine obtained there is recognised automatically in Germany and Austria under Directive 2005/36/EC, and in Switzerland through the Swiss federal recognition procedure. Bosnia is a non-EU country: recognition there does not happen automatically but through an equivalence procedure.

Many of our students therefore use Bosnia deliberately as an affordable start and transfer later to a university within the EU.

How can medical studies with a vocational diploma be financed?

Tuition fees abroad look like an obstacle at first glance. A look at the available support puts that into perspective: German student support for study abroad (Auslands-BAföG) includes, alongside the basic maintenance grant, a tuition-fee subsidy of up to EUR 5,600 a year – as a full grant that does not have to be repaid.

A calculation of our own on this, as of August 2026: at EUR 1,750 per semester, tuition fees come to EUR 3,500 per academic year. The subsidy of EUR 5,600 covers that amount in full and leaves around EUR 2,100 of headroom on paper. Over six academic years the fees add up to around EUR 21,000. My assessment: that makes the money better invested in an NC-free medical degree abroad than in two or three additional school years that guarantee no study place at the end. The qualification belongs with it: the subsidy presupposes eligibility for support, and the competent Auslands-BAföG office decides that case by case.

What routes exist within Germany without a school-leaving grade?

There are options within Germany too that do not hang on the Abitur average. Three are relevant.

• University access through your profession. Every federal state has rules for the vocationally qualified, usually on the basis of a completed apprenticeship and several years of work experience. The specifics differ considerably from state to state.
• Upgrading the vocational diploma. The time-consuming but universally valid route.
• The additional aptitude quota (Zusätzliche Eignungsquote). Ten per cent of study places are awarded without reference to the school-leaving grade; test results, apprenticeships and work experience are what count. On top of that come 60 per cent through the universities' own selection procedures.

Whether one of these routes applies in your case – and whether it can be combined with starting your studies abroad – is something we look at together. Usually the combination is the fastest option.

What plays no part in the application?

• Age. There is no age limit, either in Germany or at the locations abroad. A large share of our clients are in their early to mid-thirties.
• Dropping out of another degree. It has no effect on a medical application.
• Waiting semesters. The waiting-time quota was abolished in 2020, and accumulated semesters no longer bring any automatic advantage.

What really helps in an application with a vocational diploma?

In our experience at Medschool Experts, three things: a completed apprenticeship in a healthcare field, a good result in the German medical aptitude test (TMS) – and the willingness not to limit your place of study to Germany.
