Studying Medicine in Armenia: Universities, Costs and Recognition

Studying Medicine in Armenia: Universities, Costs and Recognition

Armenia is a small but historically significant medical study destination. Yerevan State Medical University has been training doctors since the 1920s, and alongside it there are five private universities with English-language programs. The program lasts six years including an internship, tuition fees are around 3,000 to 7,300 US dollars per academic year.

The location is strongly represented on international intermediary portals — and that is precisely where the difficulty lies: almost all figures and information on Armenia come from second-hand sources. In the following, only what is verifiable.

Which universities in Armenia offer medicine in English?

  • Yerevan State Medical University "Heratsi" (YSMU), Yerevan — the state traditional university of the country and by far the best-known institution. Approximately 6,000 to 7,300 US dollars per academic year.
  • Yerevan Haybusak University, Yerevan — private, approximately 3,800 to 5,200 US dollars.
  • University of Traditional Medicine, Yerevan — private, approximately 3,000 to 3,800 US dollars.
  • Armenian Medical Institute, Yerevan — private, approximately 4,600 US dollars.
  • Saint Tereza Medical University, Yerevan — private; information about ownership and program duration is contradictory across sources.
  • Mkhitar Gosh Armenian-Russian International University, Vanadzor — private, approximately 4,500 US dollars.

How much does the program cost?

The range runs from approximately 3,000 to 7,300 US dollars per academic year. Important for context: no official fee schedule from any university in Armenia could be found — not even from YSMU. All circulating figures come from intermediary portals. Therefore, have the amount confirmed in writing by the International Office before signing anything.

Admission, language, and program structure

There is no numerus clausus. Access is through application documents and in some cases an interview; there is no centralized entrance exam. The program lasts six years, consisting of five years of study plus one year of internship.

Classes are held in English. The portals consistently advertise that no Armenian is needed — for the clinical years at the bedside, this is in practice unrealistic, even if no binding curricular requirement to that effect can be found. Plan for basic language skills.

What is the degree worth in Germany?

Armenia is not an EU member and not a candidate for accession. In Germany, the degree is followed by an equivalence assessment, otherwise a knowledge examination, and then licensing. Details in the article Approbation and Recognition.

Armenia belongs to the European Higher Education Area but has no accreditation agency of its own recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education. Accreditation status must therefore be checked for each university individually — blanket statements on intermediary portals do not substitute for this.

Who is suited for Armenia

For applicants from non-EU countries and those who want to work internationally, Armenia is price-attractive, and YSMU has a good reputation. Those who want to practice with certainty in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland should factor in the additional recognition process — or choose an EU location. Comparable in price is the Medical Faculty Foca at 3,500 euros per academic year.

The author's view

With Armenia, what concerns me less is the location than the information situation. When a university doesn't publish its tuition fees publicly and all figures go through intermediaries, that is too little basis for a decision involving six years and a five-figure sum.

My advice is therefore simply this: request the fees, the curriculum plan, and the accreditation certificate in writing from the university. Anyone who doesn't receive these already has their answer.

Summary

  • Six universities, one of them state-run (YSMU Yerevan); six years of study including internship.
  • Tuition fees approximately 3,000 to 7,300 US dollars per academic year, no numerus clausus.
  • No official fee schedules findable — all figures come from intermediaries.
  • Not an EU member, no WFME-recognized agency of its own: in Germany, an equivalence assessment or knowledge examination applies.

Armenia can work — but only with written commitments from the university itself.
