Studying Medicine in Belarus: Universities, Costs and Recognition
28.08.2026
Which universities in Belarus offer medicine in English?
- Belarusian State Medical University (BSMU), Minsk — the largest and best-known institution. Official fees for 2026/27: general medicine in English 6,300 US dollars, dentistry in English 6,950 US dollars, general medicine in Russian 5,400 US dollars per academic year.
- Vitebsk State Medical University, Vitebsk — approximately 4,700 US dollars.
- Grodno State Medical University, Grodno — approximately 4,400 US dollars.
- Gomel State Medical University, Gomel — approximately 4,260 US dollars.
All four are state-run. The figures for the three smaller universities come from intermediary portals; only BSMU publishes its own fees.
Admission, language, and program structure
There is no numerus clausus. Access is through application documents and a selection process; the program lasts six years.
The universities run English- and Russian-language tracks in parallel. Intermediary portals regularly claim that Russian is not required — this is misleading: the clinics operate in Russian, and patient contact in the clinical phase takes place accordingly. Ask the university directly before applying about what language level is expected from which year of study.

What is the degree worth in Germany?
Belarus is not an EU member and not a candidate for accession. In Germany, the degree is followed by an equivalence assessment, otherwise a knowledge examination, and then licensing. Details in the article Approbation and Recognition.
Additionally: Belarus's representation rights in the European Higher Education Area have been suspended since 2022, confirmed in the Tirana Communiqué of 2024. This complicates diploma recognition throughout the European sphere. The country also has no accreditation agency recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education. Added to this are practical issues regarding travel and payment routes.
Who is suited for Belarus — and who is not
Professionally, the four universities have been providing training for decades, and BSMU has a good reputation. For applicants who later want to work in German-speaking countries, however, Belarus carries the greatest recognition risk of all locations presented here. Those who take this path anyway should be aware of the consequences and obtain written commitments.
Comparable in price and located within Europe is the Medical Faculty Foca at 3,500 euros per academic year. For those already studying in Belarus and wanting to transfer: How study transfer from Belarus works.
The author's view
BSMU does something I would wish many universities in this region would do: it publishes its fees openly and traceably. That speaks well of the university.
What the university cannot change is the framework. If a country's representation rights in the European Higher Education Area are suspended, recognition of a diploma in Europe becomes harder, not easier. Those who want to return to Germany should consider this very early — at the latest before half of the program is over.
Summary
- Four state universities in Minsk, Vitebsk, Grodno, and Gomel; no private medical universities.
- Tuition fees around 4,300 to 7,000 US dollars per academic year; BSMU publishes its amounts officially.
- English and Russian tracks in parallel, clinical operations in Russian.
- EHEA representation rights suspended since 2022, no WFME-recognized agency — the greatest recognition risk in the region.
