Study Transfer from Georgia: from Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi to Europe

Study Transfer from Georgia: from Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi to Europe

Georgia is the best-positioned medical study destination outside the EU in this region: around twenty universities with English-language MD programmes, moderate fees, and the NCEQE — a nationally recognised accreditation agency listed by the World Federation for Medical Education.

Nevertheless, students from Tbilisi and Batumi contact us regularly. The reasons are almost always the same: the Georgian language components in the clinical phase, the question of recognition in Germany — or simply that the chosen university did not deliver what an agency had promised. Completed courses transfer with you; those who plan early generally lose no academic year.

From Which Georgian Universities Do We Place Students?

From all universities with English-language MD programmes — public and private alike. A full overview with fees and locations is available in the article Studying Medicine in Georgia. The most frequent universities of origin are Tbilisi State Medical University, Ivane Javakhishvili TSU, David Tvildiani, New Vision University, University of Georgia, Caucasus University, Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy, Ken Walker International University, and institutions in Batumi and Kutaisi.

Why Students Transfer from Georgia to Europe

Georgian in the Clinical Phase

Instruction is in English, but at many universities Georgian language modules are a mandatory part of the curriculum, and patient contact from the third or fourth year of study takes place in Georgian. Students who find themselves unable to participate at the bedside lose learning time precisely where it matters most.

The University Was Not What Was Promised

International placement portals regularly feature Georgian institutions without a verifiably accredited MD programme. Anyone who discovers that their university is not listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools as assumed should act early.

Recognition Is Regulated

Georgia is an EU candidate country but not yet a member — the accession process is currently on hold. Until then, Georgia remains a third country, which has not been a disadvantage since the reform of March 2026: from 1 November 2026, the oral knowledge examination under Section 3 of the German Medical Licensing Act (Bundesärzteordnung) applies as the standard route to a nationwide Approbation. Details in the article Approbation and Recognition.

How Does the Study Transfer Work?

We handle the transfer for you. Our partner universities include Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Niš (Serbia), and Malta.

Where Can You Transfer from Georgia?

University of East Sarajevo, Medical Faculty Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliantly accredited until 2033. 3,500 euros per academic year, intake in November, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. Credit assessments here are typically very generous — transfer students generally enter at an advanced year of study. To the Foča study guide.

MediCampus Europeo, Malta

EU location with English as the official language — linguistically the most straightforward option if the local language at the bedside was the issue. Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, Maltese MFHEA licence. Transfer from the second year of study, 14,500 euros per year with a lump-sum payment, intake in October. To the Valletta location article.

University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)

Large state university with its own university hospital, medicine in English, six years, 360 ECTS, degree MD. 1,500 euros per quarter, i.e. 6,000 euros per academic year. To the Niš location article.

The complete list of all NC-free options in Europe is available in the study transfer article for Bulgaria.

The Level of Credit Granted Depends on the Individual Case

All routes described here are designed to help you achieve the highest possible credit level through us — without or with minimal loss of time. However, this only becomes binding after your documents have been reviewed. As a rule of thumb: usually no more than two exams may be outstanding, and their ECTS credits may not exceed a certain threshold, for a transfer into the next higher year of study to be possible. What is possible in your case is clarified in the free consultation.

What the Transfer Means Financially

Georgia charges 3,400 to 8,000 US dollars per academic year. Foča costs 3,500 euros and is therefore at the lower end of this range; Niš costs 6,000 euros. The advantage here lies less in price than in the degree and in the English-language clinical environment. Living costs in Foča and Niš are realistically 450 to 500 euros per month. Our placement fee is success-based: if no study place is found, you incur no costs.

Why You Should Seek Advice as Early as Possible

  • Places are limited and are allocated in order of receipt of complete documents.
  • Deadlines are running: Malta starts in October, Foča in November, Niš accepts applicants quarterly.
  • Enrolled is the better starting position — so have the conversation before you pay for another academic year.

Reviewing your documents takes a few days and costs nothing. Book a free study consultation — by phone or video call, together with your parents if you wish.

Author's Opinion

Georgia is not a poor choice — quite the opposite. The NCEQE recognition is a genuine quality marker that no one else in this region can match. Those who are doing well there should stay.

What I hear most often in conversations with students from Tbilisi is the language. Instruction is in English, but the patients are not. Those who realise in their third year that they are merely observing on ward rounds are losing the most important years of their training. This decision is best made early — a transfer is not failure, it is a location decision.

Summary

  • Transfer to Europe is possible from all Georgian universities with English-language MD programmes.
  • Georgia uses ECTS — credit recognition is comparatively straightforward.
  • Most common destinations: Foča (3,500 euros per year), Niš (6,000 euros), MediCampus Europeo Malta (14,500 euros).
  • Initial consultation and document review are free; the fee is success-based.

The decisive question is where you want to work later — and how early you get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions About Study Transfers from Georgia

From which Georgian universities do you place students?

From all with English-language MD programmes — public and private, in Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi.

Will my Georgian credits be recognised?

Yes. Georgia already uses ECTS, which greatly simplifies the comparison with the target university's curriculum.

Will I lose study time during the transfer?

Generally not, if the transfer is planned in time.

Is my Georgian degree recognised in Germany?

Yes, via the oral knowledge examination. Georgia is an EU candidate country but not yet a member and remains a third country until then — since the reform of November 2026, the knowledge examination under Section 3 of the German Medical Licensing Act is the standard route, followed by nationwide Approbation.

Do I need to have deregistered from my Georgian university first?

No. The transfer is planned while you are still enrolled.

Which year of study can I enter?

For Foča and Niš typically the second to fifth year, for Malta from the second year.

What does the consultation cost?

Nothing. The initial conversation and document review are free; the fee only applies upon successful placement.
