Which medical universities exist in Mongolia?

State institutions

Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS), Ulaanbaatar — the only reliable option for international students. In addition to the Mongolian-language programme, it offers an English-language MD programme structured as 'two plus four': two years of foundational studies, four years of clinical training, six years in total. Currently over 100 students from Mongolia, South Korea, and Canada are enrolled. Partners include the University of Texas Medical Center and the Chung-Ang University Health System in South Korea.

MNUMS also operates branch campuses in Darkhan-Uul, Sainshand, and Gobi-Altai — these predominantly offer non-medical degrees.

Private institutions

Etugen University, Ulaanbaatar — listed in the World Directory, teaching language is Mongolian. An English-language medical programme cannot be verified, even though recruitment portals advertise the university as an English-language option.

Ach Medical University, Ulaanbaatar — private, founded in 1998, nationally accredited. A listing in the World Directory cannot be verified. Some portals incorrectly place the university in Uzbekistan.

Otoch Manramba University — traditional Mongolian medicine; no medical programme in the European sense.

Why do students transfer from Mongolia?

No WFME framework. Mongolia has no accreditation agency recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education — not even in the application process. Since 2024, this has been a requirement for US ECFMG certification. Anyone who wants to keep that path open must change their location. The ASIIN accreditation of the curriculum is a programme accreditation and does not substitute for this.

Recognition itself is regulated. Mongolia is a third country, but this is no longer an obstacle since the reform of March 2026: from 1 November 2026, the oral knowledge examination under Paragraph 3 of the Federal Medical Licensing Act (Bundesärzteordnung) applies as the standard pathway for physicians from third countries — a case presentation and a clinical discussion of approximately 60 to 90 minutes. After that, nationwide medical licensure (Approbation) follows.

Lack of price transparency. The fees for the English-language MD programme for international students are not officially published anywhere, which makes a six-year budget hard to build.

Distance and connectivity. Ulaanbaatar is far from Central Europe, and international mobility within the country is low — around 1.4 percent of all students come from abroad, predominantly from China, Russia, and South Korea.

How do we find the right university for you?

You will not find a checklist, a document list or a set of dates on this page, and that is deliberate. What each university wants to see differs from one institution to the next and changes from year to year — and a transfer planned around an outdated detail costs exactly the time you were trying to save.

We always aim for the highest possible entry point, so that you continue rather than start over; in many cases that means one of the later study years. Through our network of official partner universities we have the widest choice of places in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. And you stay enrolled in Ulaanbaatar while we do it — you plan the move from a secure position, not from nothing.

Where you can transfer to

Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina) — one of our core locations, around €3,500 per academic year, English-language programme, six years. Foča generally grants very high year placements.

University of Niš (Serbia) — around €6,000 per academic year, English-language, six years, large clinical operations.

MediCampus Europeo Malta — around €14,500 per academic year, EU member state. The degree is automatically recognized under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive. For those who do not want to rely on an individual case assessment later, this is the clearest pathway.

How high the year placement turns out depends on the individual case

All three locations enable the highest possible placement with no or minimal loss of time through us, and every case is looked at individually. We would rather work through your situation with you than publish a rule of thumb that fits nobody — what is realistic for you is something we tell you in the free consultation.

What the transfer costs

A direct comparison is not possible because MNUMS does not publish fees for the English-language MD programme. Only the domestic rate is known, and that does not allow any conclusions to be drawn.

What is certain: Foča costs €3,500, Niš €6,000, Malta €14,500 per academic year — each in writing and verifiable. On top of this come travel costs, which are higher when moving from Mongolia than within Europe. We factor all of that into the free consultation. Why early advice pays off

The decisive question for Mongolia is where you ultimately want to end up. If Germany is the goal, the path runs through the knowledge examination — since November 2026 the clear standard pathway. If the USA is in the picture, the path via ECFMG is currently closed — and that does not change by waiting.
