Which medical universities exist in Tajikistan?

State institutions

Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU), Dushanbe — the most established institution, in operation since 1939. Three programmes: General Medicine in Tajik, Russian, and English (6 years, degree: Tabib), a separate English-language programme for nationals of India and Pakistan (5 years, MBBS), and Paediatrics in Tajik and Russian. Accredited since April 2022 by the IAAR agency.

Tajik National University (TNU), Faculty of Medicine, Dushanbe — listed in the World Directory since December 2023, six-year structure. An explicitly English-language programme cannot be officially verified.

The ATSMU branch in Khujand is listed in the World Directory as no longer in operation — yet it continues to be advertised.

Private institutions

Medical Social Institute of Tajikistan, Dushanbe — in operation since 2022, teaching in Tajik, Russian, and English, degree: Tabib after five years plus one compulsory year of internship. Accredited since May 2024.

What is often advertised but cannot be verified

Khatlon State Medical University in Danghara is offered on numerous portals as a study destination, but cannot be found in the World Directory of Medical Schools. That absence is worth knowing about before anyone books a plane ticket on the strength of a portal listing.

One further point: the website of Tajik National University states that it is “officially accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education”. This is factually impossible — the WFME does not accredit universities; it recognizes accreditation agencies. A listing in the World Directory also does not explicitly constitute recognition.

Why do students transfer from Tajikistan?

The five-year duration of the English programme. This is the most serious issue. The German equivalency assessment compares duration and contact hours against the six-year EU standard. A five-year curriculum is at a structural disadvantage in this comparison, regardless of the quality of teaching.

The target-group restriction. Because the English-language programme is designed for India and Pakistan, it is not even certain whether and how German nationals can be admitted.

Lack of price transparency. None of the Tajik universities publishes tuition fees for international students. All figures in circulation come from recruitment agents.

The language of clinical practice. On the wards, Tajik and Russian are spoken.

We look at them personally and tell you which academic year is realistic for you, at which university in which country we can place you, and where we can get you in reliably instead of leaving you to gamble a year on an open application.

Where you can transfer to

Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina) — one of our core locations, around €3,500 per academic year, English-language programme, six years. Foča generally grants very high year placements. The transfer also brings you onto the six-year structure that German authorities expect.

University of Niš (Serbia) — around €6,000 per academic year, English-language, six years.

MediCampus Europeo Malta — around €14,500 per academic year, EU member state. The degree is automatically recognized under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive; equivalency and knowledge examinations are not required.

How high the year placement turns out depends on the individual case

All three locations enable the highest possible placement with no or minimal loss of time through us, and entry into the final two years is frequently achievable. Every case is assessed individually, which is why no blanket rule is worth much here. Tajik transcripts are often not issued in ECTS, so the groundwork takes some care — that is our part of the job, not yours.

What the transfer costs

A comparison is difficult because no Tajik university publishes official fees for international students. The figures cited on portals cannot be verified.

What is certain: Foča costs €3,500, Niš €6,000, Malta €14,500 per academic year — each in writing and verifiable. Whatever one-off costs a move brings with it, we put them on the table in the initial consultation so that nothing surprises you later.

Why early advice pays off

The difference between five and six years of study cannot be remedied after the fact. Those who address this issue in the first or second year can switch to a six-year structure without major loss. Those who discover it at the end face an equivalency assessment with a structural disadvantage.
