The Major Merger of 2025: Three Institutions Became One

On 1 September 2025, the Tashkent Medical Academy, the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute, and the Tashkent State Dental Institute were merged by government decree into the new Tashkent State Medical University (TSMU). At the same time, the Urgench branch of the Tashkent Medical Academy was separated as an independent Urgench State Medical Institute.

This matters in practice: many international placement portals still list the three former names. If your enrolment certificate still names one of the dissolved institutions, this is not a problem — we resolve the legal succession in the recognition process. The official domains of the new university are tashmeduni.uz and tsmu.co.uz.

• Tashkent State Medical University (TSMU), Tashkent — since 2025 the country's major central university: medicine, paediatrics, dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing, with English-language programmes.
• Samarkand State Medical University, Samarkand — founded in 1930, medicine, dentistry, and paediatrics in English.
• Bukhara State Medical Institute “Abu Ali ibn Sino”, Bukhara — medicine and dentistry in English.
• Andijan State Medical Institute, Andijan — founded in 1955, medicine in English; official tuition fee 3,500 US dollars plus 350 US dollars service fee per academic year.
• Fergana Medical Institute of Public Health, Fergana — medicine in English.
• Urgench State Medical Institute, Urgench — independent since 2025, formerly a branch of the Tashkent Medical Academy.
• TSMU Termez Branch, Termez — branch in the south of the country.

Nordic International University, Millat Umidi University, and Sharda University Uzbekistan in Andijan are frequently mentioned alongside these but have no undergraduate medicine programme.

What Studying in Uzbekistan Costs

Tuition fees range from approximately 2,500 to 4,500 US dollars per academic year, equivalent to around 2,300 to 4,100 euros. This makes Uzbekistan one of the most affordable options in the world. On top of this come accommodation costs of 50 to 80 US dollars per month and a visa plus registration at 500 to 600 US dollars per year. Those living privately in Tashkent should budget approximately 600 to 800 euros per month in total.

Important caveat: the only fee currently confirmed directly by a university is that of Andijan State Medical Institute. All other figures come from placement portals and vary between sources by up to 30 per cent. Have every figure confirmed in writing by the International Office before making a decision — not by an agency.

What to Look Out for at a Uzbek University

Listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools

Most state institutions and a large proportion of private ones are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Some of the most recently founded institutions are not — and the label “WHO approved” on placement portals does not substitute for this check. We verify for you during the initial consultation how your institution is listed there and in ANABIN.

Always Apply Directly Through the University

Tashkent State Medical University explicitly states that admission interviews may not be conducted by agencies and that the student visa must be processed through the university — not via a tourist visa. Those already enrolled should verify that their residence permit is in fact a student visa.

Recognition Is Regulated

Uzbekistan is not an EU member and thus remains a third country. This has not been a disadvantage since the reform of March 2026: from 1 November 2026, the oral knowledge examination under Section 3 of the German Medical Licensing Act (Bundesärzteordnung) applies as the standard route to a nationwide Approbation. Where Can You Transfer from Uzbekistan?

University of East Sarajevo, Medical Faculty Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliantly accredited until 2033. 3,500 euros per academic year, intake in November, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. MediCampus Europeo, Malta

EU location with English as the official language — linguistically the most straightforward option for anyone coming from an English-language programme. Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, Maltese MFHEA licence, clinical phase from the third year of study. Transfer from the second year of study, 14,500 euros per year with a lump-sum payment, intake in October. To the Valletta location article.

University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)

Large state university with its own university hospital, medicine in English, six years, 360 ECTS, degree MD. 1,500 euros per quarter, i.e. 6,000 euros per academic year. To the Niš location article.

What the Transfer Means Financially

Uzbekistan is cheaper than almost every European alternative at 2,500 to 4,500 US dollars per academic year — Foča at 3,500 euros is in a comparable range, Niš at 6,000 euros is above it. The benefit here lies not in price but in the degree and the path to it: a European-accredited programme, an English-language clinical environment, and a journey home of a few hours rather than a full travel day. Why You Should Seek Advice as Early as Possible

• Places are limited and are allocated in order of receipt of complete documents.
• Deadlines are running: Malta starts in October, Foča in November, Niš accepts applicants quarterly.
• Documents from Central Asia require lead time. Transcripts, certified translations, and apostilles take longer than within the EU — for the institutions merged in 2025, clarifying legal succession adds further time.
