How to Verify an NMC-Compliant Foreign Medical University

There is no official NMC list of approved foreign universities. Here is the 7-step checklist Indian students and parents can use to verify that an MBBS programme abroad meets the NMC rules before paying any fee.

Many agents still advertise “NMC-approved” or “MCI-approved” universities. Such a list does not exist anymore. The NMC does not approve or endorse foreign medical colleges. Instead, the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 (FMGL) define conditions your course must meet. If it does not, you cannot register in India, no matter how good the university is. This checklist shows you how to verify a university yourself.

Short version: check the World Directory of Medical Schools listing, a course of at least 54 months in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, registration in the country of study, NEET qualification and no online substitute for practical training.

Step 1: check the World Directory of Medical Schools

Search the university in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). The faculty of medicine itself must be listed, not only the parent university. Note the official name, because some private colleges use names very close to state universities.

Step 2: check the course duration of at least 54 months

The medical course must last at least 54 months, which is four and a half years, before the internship. Most programmes in Europe run six years. Some programmes in Central Asia run five years plus internship. Ask for the official curriculum and count the months.

Step 3: check English as the medium of instruction

The whole course must be taught in English. Ask for written confirmation from the university and look at the timetable. Learning the local language for patient contact is fine and normal.

Step 4: check the 12-month internship at the same university

The course, training and internship must be completed at the same foreign university, with an internship of at least 12 months. Programmes that send you to another country for clinical years do not follow this pattern.

Step 5: check registration in the country of study

After graduation you must be eligible for a licence to practise in the country where you studied, on the same terms as local graduates. Ask the university how its international graduates obtain this registration.

Step 6: check NEET and your eligibility

You need a qualifying NEET-UG result before you start. Read our page on NEET for MBBS abroad.

Step 7: check physical attendance

Online classes cannot replace practical and clinical training. Any online period must be compensated by physical attendance at the university. Avoid programmes that advertise large online components.
