Is NEET Required for MBBS Abroad?
NEET for MBBS abroad explained: when NEET is required, which score is enough, how long the result is valid and how Indian students with a low NEET score still get a medical seat abroad.
The short answer: yes, NEET is required for MBBS abroad if you want to work as a doctor in India one day. The longer answer is more encouraging. You need to qualify NEET. You do not need the rank that a government seat in India demands. For many students this is the difference between giving up on medicine and starting their studies this year.
Qualifying NEET means reaching the qualifying percentile of your category in NEET-UG: the 50th percentile for the general category and the 40th percentile for OBC, SC and ST candidates. The exact cut-off marks out of 720 change every year.
Why NEET is required for MBBS abroad
Since 2018, Indian citizens need a NEET-UG qualification to take up a medical degree abroad if they want to be registered in India afterwards. Without it you cannot sit FMGE or NExT, and without the licensing exam there is no registration. The foreign university itself may admit you without NEET. India will not let you practise. That is the trap, and it catches students every year.
NEET validity for MBBS abroad
Your NEET result is valid for three years from the date it is declared, for the purpose of admission to a medical course abroad. If you qualified in 2025, you can start abroad in 2025, 2026 or 2027. If the three years have passed, you sit NEET again before you enrol.
MBBS abroad with a low NEET score
This is the most common situation we see: a student qualifies NEET with 250, 300 or 400 marks. Too low for a government college, and a private seat is out of reach financially. Abroad, the NEET score plays no role in the admission decision. The universities look at your Class 12 marks in physics, chemistry and biology and at your documents. A qualifying score is all India asks for.
- Qualified NEET with a low score: you can start MBBS abroad this year
- Not qualified yet: repeat NEET and prepare your application in parallel, so you lose no time after the result
- No plan to return to India: the foreign university can admit you without NEET, but you close the door to India for good
MBBS abroad without NEET: what it really means
You will find offers for MBBS abroad without NEET. Technically they are correct, because NEET is an Indian requirement and not a requirement of the foreign university. If your goal is a career in Europe, the Gulf, the UK or the USA and you are sure you will not need an Indian registration, the path is open. Our advice is still to qualify NEET first. One exam keeps your home country as an option for the rest of your life.
