The Aristotle University is the largest university in Greece: founded in 1925, with a main campus of approximately 230,000 square metres in the heart of Thessaloniki and nearly 90,000 enrolled students. The Medical Faculty was established in 1942, during the occupation and against considerable resistance from the local medical profession. Today it has around 4,000 students, is organised into six sectors with 82 departments and laboratories, and provides clinical training at its own university hospital as well as six further hospitals across the city.

The English-Language Medicine Programme

Of particular interest is the degree programme that the faculty offers as the first English-language undergraduate Medicine degree in Greece. It runs for six years, or twelve semesters, comprises 360 ECTS credits, and consists of 83 modules — 76 regular courses and seven clinical placements. There are 60 places per cohort. That number is small, but it means small groups and, after two semesters, lecturers who know your name. The programme is young, so you will be part of something still being built rather than a well-established system with thirty years of accumulated experience — those looking for maximum planning certainty should bear that in mind.

Studying on the Ground

The early semesters cover the foundational disciplines, from Anatomy through Biochemistry and Physiology to Medical Genetics. Clinical skills are practised from the outset; rotations proper begin in the fourth year, and the final two semesters consist of full-day placements in the affiliated hospitals. Students have access to around 60 clinics across seven hospitals in the city — an exceptionally broad offering for a faculty of this size. Greek is integrated into the curriculum from day one, and it is not an optional extra but a prerequisite: the language spoken at the bedside is Greek, and without it you lose precisely the part of your training you came here for.

Who This Location Suits

Thessaloniki is right for you if you want an EU degree from a well-established, research-active faculty and are prepared to pay tuition fees at Western European levels. It is less suitable if your budget is tight or if you cannot commit to a fixed start date — the faculty does not permit deferral. It is a good fit if you are drawn to the prospect of spending six years in one of the most vibrant student cities in South-Eastern Europe. Be prepared to build a new language alongside your academic studies: students who treat Greek as a box to tick will find themselves on the margins of the ward round in the clinical years. Those who take it seriously will find in Thessaloniki a degree that can compete academically and practically with what a German faculty would have offered.

Admission & Finances

Who Can Apply

The English-language programme is open to international students who completed at least their final two years of secondary school outside Greece. A German Abitur satisfies this requirement. In addition, English proficiency at a minimum of B2 level is required, demonstrated for example by an IELTS score of at least Band 6 or a TOEFL score of at least 79.

The Selection Process

After the online application, candidates go through a document review, a personal statement, an interview, and an admission test comprising 60 multiple-choice questions in Biology, Chemistry, and logical reasoning. Applicants are exempt from the test if they can present BMAT, MediTest-EU, or A-Level results with at least AAB in Chemistry, Biology, and one further subject. There are two application rounds per year, with deadlines on 31 January and 31 May. Anyone who accepts an offer must begin in the same academic year — deferring to the following year is not permitted.

Costs

Tuition fees are 12,000 euros per academic year, payable in two instalments. The first instalment of 6,000 euros is due upon acceptance of the place and is non-refundable. This puts Thessaloniki at the upper end of English-language programmes in South-Eastern Europe. The cost of living, on the other hand, is lower than in major German cities; reliable all-in figures are difficult to give with any certainty, as rent and day-to-day expenses vary considerably depending on the neighbourhood.

Examination Regulations & Retakes

Studies & Recognition

Structure and Language of Instruction

Six years, twelve semesters, 360 ECTS credits, divided into 76 courses and seven clinical placements. The language of instruction and examination in the international programme is English. Greek is taught alongside the academic programme and built up from the first semester; no prior knowledge is expected, but steady progress is.

Clinical Training and Placements

Clinical skills are on the timetable from the very first semester; rotations begin in the fourth year, and the sixth year consists entirely of full-day placements in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, and other specialties. Teaching takes place at a university hospital and six further hospitals across the city. To be realistic: patient contact takes place in Greek, and how much you take away from the wards depends directly on how far your language skills have developed.

The Degree and Recognition in Germany

The programme concludes with the Greek medical diploma, the Ptychio Iatrikis. As Greece is an EU member state, the degree falls under the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC and is automatically recognised in Germany — no equivalence assessment or knowledge test is required. You apply for a licence to practise medicine under § 3 of the Federal Medical Licensing Act (Bundesärzteordnung) through the relevant state authority; you will need to demonstrate your German language proficiency, typically via the specialist language examination (Fachsprachenprüfung) of the relevant Medical Association.

Pros & Cons

Campus & Life

The City

Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece and is widely regarded as the country's student capital — something the waterfront promenade, the Ladadika district, and the streets around the Aristotelous axis confirm every evening. The campus is centrally located, so you live in the middle of the city rather than on its outskirts.

Accommodation and Daily Life

Most international students live in shared flats in the neighbourhoods around campus. Rents are lower than in Germany, though availability is tight at the start of each semester. Greek is considerably more useful than English when it comes to finding accommodation and dealing with officialdom, even if English is widely spoken in student circles.

Getting There and the Community

Makedonia Airport is on the outskirts of the city and has direct connections to several German airports, with particularly frequent services in summer. There is no large German-speaking student community here as there is in Bulgaria, but the cohort is small and international, which tends to make it easier rather than harder to find your feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply with a German Abitur?

Yes. The English-language Medicine programme is open to international students who completed at least their final two years of secondary school outside Greece. You will also need to demonstrate English proficiency at a minimum B2 level. Your Abitur grade itself is not the deciding criterion.

How does the selection process work?

After the online application, the process involves a document review, a personal statement, an interview, and an admission test comprising 60 multiple-choice questions in Biology, Chemistry, and logical reasoning. The test is waived for applicants who can present BMAT, MediTest-EU, or A-Level results with at least AAB in Chemistry, Biology, and one further subject. The application deadlines are 31 January and 31 May.

How much does the programme cost?

Tuition fees are 12,000 euros per academic year, payable in two instalments. The first instalment of 6,000 euros is due upon acceptance of the place and is non-refundable. This makes Thessaloniki one of the more expensive English-language programmes in South-Eastern Europe, though the cost of living is comparatively affordable.

Do I need to learn Greek?

Yes, if you want to get the most out of your clinical training. Taught sessions are in English, but history-taking and ward rounds take place in Greek. That is why Greek is built into the curriculum from the very first semester; no prior knowledge is required, but continuous learning is expected throughout the programme.

Is the degree recognised in Germany?

Yes. As an EU degree, the Greek medical diploma falls under Directive 2005/36/EC and is automatically recognised. To obtain a licence to practise medicine under § 3 of the Bundesärzteordnung, you apply to the relevant state authority and demonstrate your German language proficiency, typically through the Fachsprachenprüfung. A knowledge test of the kind required for non-EU degrees is not necessary.
