Short answer

Medicine in Europe vs the UK in 2026: six years abroad from £47,700 all-in, versus a Plan 5 loan near £100,000 repaid over 19 years. Student finance facts.

Six years of medicine in Europe cost a UK student between about £47,700 and £117,500 all-in at 2026 prices, depending on the city. A UK medical degree costs nothing upfront but leaves a student loan of around £100,000, which a doctor typically repays over about 19 years through 9 per cent of salary. The real difference is when you pay, and how many years you wait to start.

I paid my tuition in Sofia per semester from 2015 to 2021, and my parents and I kept a simple spreadsheet. Today, as founder of Medschool Experts in Bern, I see British families build the same spreadsheet, usually with one column missing: the UK loan after graduation.

Below you find both columns side by side, with real 2026 fees, the Plan 5 rules, three European examples and the cost of a gap year.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

How much does medicine cost in the UK for a UK student in 2026?

A five-year medical degree in England costs a home student £9,790 a year in tuition in 2026/27, rising to £10,050 in 2027/28, funded by a tuition fee loan. The maintenance loan is up to £10,830 a year for students living away from home. From year five the NHS Bursary pays tuition. Graduates leave with a loan balance of roughly £100,000.

That balance is my own model, not an official figure. It assumes the maximum loans, four years of tuition loan, a reduced maintenance loan in year five, inflation of 3 per cent and Plan 5 interest at RPI, which is 4.1 per cent for 2026/27. Families who top up living costs from their own pocket pay that on top.

The UK route has one obvious strength: nobody pays upfront. Its cost arrives later, in every payslip.

How does Plan 5 repayment work for a doctor?

Plan 5 student loans apply to English students who started university in or after 2023. Graduates repay 9 per cent of income above £25,000 a year, interest runs at RPI, and any remaining balance is written off 40 years after the April after leaving university. The threshold is due to rise with RPI from 2027.

For most graduates the write-off matters. For doctors it rarely does, because their salaries rise fast. An FY1 doctor in England earns a basic salary of about £41,200 in 2026/27 (planning value), and specialty registrars and consultants earn far more. In my model, a doctor graduating in 2031 clears the £100,000 balance after about 19 years and repays about £150,000 in total, nominal. In 2026 money that is about £94,000.

So the UK degree is not free. It is financed, and the doctor pays it back with interest.

How much does six years of medicine in Europe cost?

Six years of English-taught medicine at partner universities of Medschool Experts cost between about 57,000 euros and 140,400 euros all-in in 2026. The Faculty of Medicine in Foča is the most affordable at 3,500 euros a year in tuition. The Medical University of Pleven charges 9,000 euros a year, Masaryk University Brno 15,000 euros.

The three examples below include tuition, rent, food, transport and four flights home a year. Living costs are planning values for 2026, not official figures, and the exchange rate is 1 euro = £0.837 as of 23 October 2026.

Brno in detail: 90,000 euros tuition, about 650 euros a month for a room in a shared flat, food and transport, which adds 46,800 euros, and about 3,600 euros for flights. Pleven: 54,000 euros tuition, 46,800 euros living, 3,600 euros flights. Foča: 21,000 euros tuition and about 36,000 euros for living costs and flights.

Can UK students get student finance to study medicine abroad?

No. Student Finance England only funds courses in the UK, so a full medical degree at a university in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic or Bosnia and Herzegovina does not qualify for a tuition fee loan or a maintenance loan in 2026. Study abroad is funded only as part of a UK degree. The other UK funding bodies follow the same principle.

Families therefore pay a European degree from savings, earnings or a private loan. Tuition is due per semester or per year, in instalments rather than as one lump sum. Medschool Experts also offers financing solutions on request for the full cost of studying at the University of East Sarajevo in Foča.

What does a gap year or resit cost a future doctor?

A gap year or an A-level resit delays a medical career by at least one year, and one year of a doctor's career is worth at least an FY1 salary of about £41,200 in England in 2026/27. A resit route that works means a new UCAT, a new UCAS cycle and a start one or two years later, with graduation moving from 2032 to 2033 or 2034.

The lost year is not lost at the start of the career, where salaries are lowest. It is lost at the end, at consultant level. Viewed that way, the six-year tuition in Foča, about £17,600, costs less than half of one FY1 year.

Students who missed their offer can read no UK medicine offer in 2026: the routes still open. Placement at our 25+ partner universities is independent of school-leaving grades: neither A-level results nor the UCAT decides the place.

Which option is cheaper for a UK family?

For a UK family, Foča is cheaper than the UK route even before interest, Pleven costs about the same as the UK loan balance, and Brno costs more upfront than the UK loan but less than the UK loan repaid with interest. The decisive questions are whether the family can pay during the degree and whether a UK place is realistic at all.

Those two questions often answer each other. UK medicine places are capped and heavily oversubscribed. A family that can spread 3,500 to 15,000 euros a year over six years buys certainty of a start date. A family that waits buys a lottery ticket and a loan.

There is also the licence. Pleven and Brno lead to the relevant European qualification route, Foča to PLAB. Both routes are explained in our hub on studying medicine abroad from the UK. Which faculty fits your budget is the first thing we look at in a free consultation.

What else belongs in the budget?

Beyond tuition and rent, a UK student abroad should budget for health insurance, residence permit fees, translations of school documents, textbooks and lab coats, an English test before GMC registration, and a reserve for one unexpected flight home a year. Together these add roughly 800 to 1,500 euros a year in my experience.

Exchange rates move, and every figure in pounds here moves with them. A family paying 15,000 euros a year should keep a small buffer or pay part of the year in advance when the rate is good.

What families often forget is the money they do not spend. Students in Foča or Pleven pay far less for rent than students in Bristol or London, and the difference adds up over six years.

International perspective: how other countries pay for medical school

Every country finances medical training differently, and the UK model of a large income-contingent loan is unusual. In Germany, public medical schools charge no tuition, but places go through a central allocation by school grades and a test, and thousands of German students choose paid programmes abroad. In the United States, the median four-year cost of attendance at a private medical school is well above 300,000 dollars, financed largely by federal loans with no income-linked write-off.

Australia uses an income-contingent loan similar to the UK's for Commonwealth-supported places, while full-fee international places cost several hundred thousand Australian dollars. Ireland charges EU students a student contribution but non-EU students full fees that rival private US schools. In Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, local-language programmes are free or nearly free for nationals and EU citizens, and English-taught programmes charge the fees shown above.

Seen side by side, an English-taught degree in Europe sits in the middle: dearer than free tuition at home, far cheaper than the US, and paid without long-term debt.

The author's view

At 16 I was a pupil at Shrewsbury School in England. My classmates took three science A-levels and most of them reached top grades. Some of them still did not get a medicine place. I think of them whenever a UK family tells me that the European route is the expensive one.

When I started in Sofia in 2015, the money felt large. Six years later I had a European degree, no student debt and a profession. Every semester instalment bought a step I could see.

My assessment: compare the European fees with the UK loan repaid, not with zero. Then add the years you would wait for a UK place. For most families I talk to, that changes the answer.

Summary

  • UK medicine in England costs £9,790 a year in tuition in 2026/27, funded by a loan, plus up to £10,830 maintenance loan.
  • A model doctor graduates with about £100,000 of Plan 5 debt and repays about £150,000 nominal over about 19 years.
  • Six years in Europe cost about £47,700 (Foča), £87,400 (Pleven) or £117,500 (Brno) all-in at 2026 prices.
  • Student Finance does not fund full degrees outside the UK, so European fees are paid in instalments by the family.
  • One waiting year costs at least an FY1 salary of about £41,200, more than twice the six-year tuition in Foča.
  • Placement at our 25+ partner universities is independent of A-level grades and the UCAT.

Conclusion

The UK degree is financed later, the European degree is paid during the study. Which is cheaper depends on the city and on how many years a family would otherwise wait.

Frequently asked questions about the cost of medicine in Europe vs the UK

Is it cheaper to study medicine in Europe than in the UK?

It depends on the city. Six years in Foča cost about £47,700 all-in at 2026 prices, less than the roughly £100,000 Plan 5 balance of a UK graduate. Pleven costs about £87,400, close to the UK balance. Brno costs about £117,500, less than the roughly £150,000 a UK doctor repays with interest.

Can I get a student loan to study medicine abroad?

No. Student Finance England only funds courses in the UK, so a full degree at a university abroad does not qualify for a tuition fee loan or maintenance loan in 2026. Families pay from savings, earnings or private loans. Medschool Experts offers financing solutions on request for studies in Foča.

How much is the UK tuition fee for medicine in 2026?

Home students in England pay £9,790 a year in 2026/27 and £10,050 in 2027/28, funded by a tuition fee loan. On a standard five-year course, the NHS Bursary pays tuition from year five. The maintenance loan is up to £10,830 a year for students living away from home.

How long does a doctor take to repay a Plan 5 loan?

In our model, a doctor graduating in 2031 with about £100,000 of debt repays it in full after about 19 years, paying about £150,000 nominal. Plan 5 takes 9 per cent of income above £25,000, charges RPI interest and writes off any remainder after 40 years.

How is tuition paid at European universities?

Tuition at European partner universities is paid per semester or per year. The number and dates of instalments differ by faculty and are confirmed in the admission documents.

What is the cheapest medical school in Europe for UK students?

Among the 25+ partner universities of Medschool Experts, the Faculty of Medicine in Foča, University of East Sarajevo, is the most affordable at 3,500 euros a year, about 57,000 euros for six years all-in. Its graduates register with the GMC through PLAB.

Does a gap year make financial sense?

A gap year delays the career by at least one year, worth at least an FY1 basic salary of about £41,200 in 2026/27. That is more than twice the six-year tuition in Foča. A gap year can still make sense for a student who is close to a UK offer, but it should be compared with a start in Europe this year.
