How to Become a Veterinarian: How Long Vet School Takes in Europe, the UK and the USA (2026)

Short answer

How to become a veterinarian: vet school takes 5 to 6 years in Europe, 5 in the UK and about 8 in the USA. Costs from 6,000 euros a year and licensing routes.

In September 2026 Medschool Experts became the official partner agency of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at IULS Iași in Romania, after a video call with the university's international relations office. The English-taught programme there runs six years and costs 6,000 euros a year. For many families it was the number that changed the conversation.

Becoming a veterinarian takes five to six years in Europe and the United Kingdom, and usually eight in the United States, where a bachelor comes before a four-year DVM. A European veterinary degree is recognised across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC and is the starting point for licences in the UK, the USA and the Gulf.

I studied dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia from 2015 to 2021, so I know the six-year rhythm of a European health degree from the inside. Today I run Medschool Experts from Bern.

How long is vet school in Europe, the UK and the USA?

Vet school lasts five to six years in Europe in 2026: six years at IULS Iași in Romania and in Košice in Slovakia, five and a half years in Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland. In the United Kingdom veterinary degrees take five years. In the United States the DVM lasts four years, but students normally complete a bachelor first, so the route takes about eight years.

Years from school to licence (2026)Romania (Iași)6 yearsBulgaria5.5 yearsHungary5.5 yearsSlovakia6 yearsPoland5.5 yearsUnited Kingdom5 yearsUSA, BA + DVM4 + 4 years
Standard programme length in 2026. In the USA a bachelor degree usually comes before the four-year DVM.

The European programmes go straight from school to the veterinary degree. There is no pre-vet bachelor. Students start with anatomy, histology and chemistry in the first year and see animals in the clinics from the third or fourth year onwards. The final year is mostly practical, in small-animal, large-animal and equine clinics and in food hygiene.

Directive 2005/36/EC sets the floor: at least five years of full-time study for a veterinary surgeon. Every degree in the table below meets it.

Where can you study veterinary medicine in English in Europe?

English-taught veterinary degrees in Europe in 2026 are offered in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland, among others. Annual tuition ranges from 6,000 euros at IULS Iași, the most affordable option for a state veterinary degree in the EU, to 12,480 euros in Budapest.

IULS Iași, the Ion Ionescu de la Brad University of Life Sciences, is a state university with a large veterinary campus, its own clinics for small animals and horses, and diagnostic imaging including CT. Medschool Experts is the university's only authorised partner agency for the English programme. The degree is an EU degree and is internationally recognised, including in India and Israel.

Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland have long-established faculties with English lines. Which one fits a student depends on budget, the city and the profile. Placement through Medschool Experts is independent of your high-school diploma grades; which faculty fits you is something we discuss in a free consultation.

How does the DVM route work in the United States?

In the United States in 2026 a veterinarian holds a DVM or VMD from a four-year veterinary college. Almost every student enters after completing a bachelor's degree with science prerequisites, so the route from high school takes around eight years. Graduates then pass the NAVLE and any state requirements.

The first two or three years of a US DVM cover basic and clinical sciences; the final year is clinical rotations. Tuition at US veterinary colleges is high, and many graduates carry substantial student debt. The median annual wage for veterinarians in the United States was $130,100 in May 2025.

For a European student the US route is rarely the starting point. A European degree followed by a US licence is possible, though, and is described further down.

What does the veterinary curriculum look like year by year?

A six-year veterinary degree in Europe in 2026 is split into roughly two preclinical years, two or three paraclinical and clinical years, and a final year of practical rotations. At IULS Iași the language of teaching is English throughout, and the clinical years take place in the faculty's own clinics.

Years 1 and 2. Anatomy of domestic animals, histology, physiology, biochemistry, animal husbandry.

Years 3 and 4. Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, parasitology, diagnostics, surgery basics.

Years 5 and 6. Internal medicine, surgery, reproduction, food hygiene, clinical rotations and the final thesis.

One limitation, stated soberly: vet school is long and physically demanding. Large-animal rotations start early in the morning and happen in barns, not in lecture halls. Students who have spent time on a farm or in a practice before enrolling cope better.

The local language is part of the plan. Learning some Romanian in the first years helps, because farmers and pet owners in the clinic speak it.

How is a European vet degree recognised?

A veterinary degree from an EU university is recognised automatically in all 27 member states under Directive 2005/36/EC in 2026. A graduate of IULS Iași can register as a veterinarian in Germany, Italy, France or Ireland on the same terms as a graduate of a domestic faculty, after the usual registration with the national veterinary chamber.

Outside the EU, each country runs its own procedure. The IULS Iași degree is recognised in India and Israel, among others. For the United Kingdom, the United States and the Gulf states the routes are summarised in the next sections.

Where an EU vet degree leads (2026)EU veterinary degreeDirective 2005/36/ECEUautomaticrecognitionUKRCVSregistrationUSAECFVG orPAVE, NAVLEGulfnationallicence
Each country keeps its own register. The EU degree is the starting point for all four routes in 2026.

Licensing routes: RCVS in the UK and ECFVG or PAVE in the USA

In the United Kingdom veterinary surgeons register with the RCVS in 2026. Holders of degrees from listed European faculties can register directly, with proof of English; others take the RCVS statutory membership examination. From January 2029 the RCVS plans to narrow its list of directly registered programmes, so the examination route will matter more.

In the United States graduates of foreign veterinary schools follow one of two existing routes. The ECFVG programme has four steps: graduation, English proficiency, the Basic and Clinical Sciences Examination and a practical Clinical Proficiency Examination of about three days. The PAVE programme has three steps, including a Qualifying Science Exam and clinical rotations at a US school. Both lead to the NAVLE and a state licence.

Both routes are well trodden. They add a year or two after the European degree and some exam fees. Plan for both from the start.

Worked example: six years at IULS Iași

A student who starts at IULS Iași in autumn 2026 pays 6,000 euros a year in tuition, 36,000 euros over six years. Rent and living costs in Iași of about 500 euros a month add roughly 36,000 euros. With four flights home a year, the whole veterinary degree costs about 75,600 euros.

Planning values for 2026: Iași 6,000 euros a year, Budapest 12,480 euros a year, living costs about 500 to 550 euros a month.

The comparison with Budapest shows the range. There tuition alone over eleven semesters comes to about 68,600 euros, and the total with living costs passes 100,000 euros. Both are good faculties. The difference in price is real, and for many families it decides the question.

What does a veterinarian earn after graduation?

Veterinarians in 2026 earn very different amounts depending on country and field. In the United States the median annual wage was $130,100 in May 2025. In Germany an employed veterinarian in a small-animal practice typically starts at around 3,500 to 4,500 euros gross a month, with higher pay in industry, public health and specialist clinics.

The fields differ too. Small-animal practice in cities is the most common first job. Large-animal and equine work pays well in rural regions with too few vets. Public veterinary service, meat hygiene and laboratory work offer regular hours. Pharmaceutical companies hire vets for research and regulatory work.

Many European graduates move after a few years. A vet from Iași may start in Romania or Italy, then work in Ireland or the United Kingdom, where demand is high. The EU degree makes those moves a question of paperwork. Not of new exams.

Timeline: from application to first job

The timeline for becoming a veterinarian through a European degree in 2026 is simple: placement in spring or summer, start in October, six years of study, then registration in the country of work. A student who starts at 19 in Iași is a licensed veterinarian at 25.

Typical timeline, IULS Iași: spring to summer 2026 consultation and placement with Medschool Experts. October 2026 start of year one. 2032 graduation. Autumn 2032 registration with the veterinary chamber in an EU country, or the RCVS, ECFVG or Gulf route.

Students who already hold a degree in biology, animal science or a related field can ask about credit recognition. Medschool Experts is the leading expert worldwide in credit recognition and frequently achieves placement into a higher year at top universities. Details are on the university transfer page.

International perspective: how this works in other countries

Germany admits veterinary students to only five faculties, and places are allocated centrally, so many German students choose an English-taught degree abroad. With an EU degree they register with the regional veterinary chamber at home, as automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC applies.

The United Kingdom has a growing number of veterinary schools, all with five-year programmes. Graduates of European faculties work in UK practices after RCVS registration, and UK practices recruit European vets every year.

In the United States most veterinarians graduate from just over 30 domestic colleges, and foreign graduates join through ECFVG or PAVE. In the Gulf states, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, veterinarians are licensed by the ministry responsible for agriculture or the environment, which verifies the degree and usually sets an examination or interview. A European degree is a common starting point there.

Across these four systems the pattern is the same. The degree is the long part. Licensing in a second country is a matter of months, not years.

Which veterinary faculty is right for you?

Choosing a European veterinary faculty in 2026 comes down to four points: total cost, the city, the clinics and the language spoken by patients' owners. IULS Iași combines a state EU degree, a six-year English programme and the lowest tuition in this comparison.

The author's view

When we spoke with the international relations office of IULS Iași in September 2026, what impressed me was not the price. It was the clinics. A veterinary degree is only as good as the hours students spend with animals, and Iași has the patients, the imaging and the large-animal facilities to give them those hours.

From my own six years at the Medical University of Sofia I know that the first year abroad is the hardest, and the reason is rarely the subject. It is the new city and the new language. Students who plan the budget, learn some Romanian in the first months and treat the clinic as their second home do very well. Six years go faster than you expect.

Summary

  • Vet school takes five to six years in Europe and five in the UK; in the USA a bachelor plus a four-year DVM takes about eight.
  • IULS Iași in Romania offers a six-year English programme at 6,000 euros a year in 2026.
  • A full degree in Iași costs about 75,600 euros including living costs and flights.
  • EU veterinary degrees are recognised automatically across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC.
  • The UK route runs through RCVS registration; the US route through ECFVG or PAVE and the NAVLE.
  • The median US veterinarian wage was $130,100 in May 2025.

Conclusion

Becoming a veterinarian through a European degree is the shorter and cheaper route compared with the United States, and it opens the same doors after licensing. Six years in Iași cost less than two years of tuition at many US colleges.
