Failing Medical School in Austria? What to Do When Your Last Exam Attempt Is Gone (2026)

Failing Medical School in Austria? What to Do When Your Last Exam Attempt Is Gone (2026)

Short answer

Failing medical school in Austria? Fourth attempt failed, SIP not passed or admission lapsed: your rights under the Universities Act and the way back as a doctor.

At a glance

  • Failing medical school in Austria follows the Universities Act: every exam may be repeated at least three times, so you have at least four attempts
  • From the third repeat the exam is held before a commission
  • If the last permitted repeat is failed, your admission lapses and that university may not admit you to Medicine again
  • A place at another Austrian medical university means passing the MedAT again
  • Too few credits in the first two years also end your admission
  • Way out: transfer to a medical school in another EU country, often into a higher year
  • Coming back: an EU medical degree is recognised in Austria, and the Medical Chamber enters you in the register of doctors
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

Austria is generous with attempts and strict at the end. Four sittings sound like plenty until the third repeat of a year-end exam is scheduled before a commission and you realise that the next result decides everything.

Below you find how the Universities Act counts attempts, what happens when your admission lapses, which deadlines protect you, and how a transfer to a medical school in another EU country brings you back to Austria as a doctor.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Exam attempts

In short: Under section 77 of the Austrian Universities Act 2002 every exam may be repeated three times, which gives you four attempts. The statute of a university can allow more. From the third repeat the exam is held before a commission, and on request already from the second.

All attempts for the same exam at the same university are counted together. For the very last exam of the degree the law grants one further repeat.

In Medicine the exams that decide are the large summative ones at the end of a year, such as the SIP in Vienna. They cover a whole year of material in one sitting, and a failed block can cost twelve months.

Admission lapses

In short: If you fail the last permitted repeat, your admission to the degree lapses under section 68 of the Universities Act. Section 63 then excludes a new admission at that university for every degree in which the same exam is compulsory. At your university, Medicine is over.

Another Austrian medical university is legally possible. In practice it means a new MedAT, a ranking among thousands of applicants and a restart, with only part of your work recognised.

There is a second trap. Students admitted since the winter semester 2022 must reach 16 ECTS within the first four semesters. Whoever misses this minimum loses the admission and is blocked for that degree at that university for two academic years.

Annulment and deadlines

In short: In Austria a grade itself cannot be appealed. If a failed exam had a serious defect in how it was conducted, you can apply for annulment under section 79 of the Universities Act within two weeks of the result. An annulled attempt is not counted.

  • Two weeks: the deadline for the annulment application runs from the day the result is announced.
  • Six months: for that long you may inspect your exam documents and the assessment.
  • Deregister in time: an exam you do not sit after a proper deregistration is not an attempt.
  • Different exam method: with a documented disability you are entitled to another form of examination.

Why students get stuck

In short: Medical students in Austria who fail rarely lack ability. They passed the MedAT against roughly ten applicants per place. The usual reasons are burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis, paid work beside the programme, exam anxiety and an undiagnosed learning difference.

A year-end exam with hundreds of multiple-choice questions rewards one style of learning. Students who understand the material and still fail it twice often need a different format, not more hours.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Switch early

In short: In Austria the best moment to transfer is before the commission exam. As long as your admission is valid you leave in good standing and with recent coursework. After the admission has lapsed a transfer abroad is still possible.

  • You have failed the same exam twice or more.
  • The next sitting is a commission exam.
  • You are a year or more behind your cohort.
  • Your admission has already lapsed.

If one of these applies to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the next exam.

Next four weeks

  • Week 1: count your attempts in the student record and read the statute of your university on repeats.
  • Week 1 to 2: if the last exam had a defect, file the annulment application within two weeks and inspect the documents.
  • Week 2 to 3: talk to the students' union advisers and, if anxiety or low mood play a part, to the psychological student counselling service.
  • Week 3 to 4: order your transcript and collect the curriculum descriptions of all passed courses.
  • Before you register for the last repeat: book a free transfer consultation and compare the commission exam with a transfer and a planned return to Austria.

Transfer within the EU

In short: A transfer from an Austrian medical university to a medical school in another EU country is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your transcript and course descriptions. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

Austrian study grants can follow you: the mobility grant supports a full degree in another EU country.

Returning to Austria

In short: Yes, you can come back. A medical degree from another EU country is recognised in Austria under Directive 2005/36/EC. The Austrian Medical Chamber enters you in the register of doctors, and you start the nine-month basic training and then your specialist or general practice training.

There is no extra knowledge test for EU degrees, and as a German speaker you already meet the language side of the job. What matters is that your degree gives full access to the profession in the country where you graduate, and we choose your university with exactly that in mind.

Costs

In short: EU students pay no tuition at Austrian public universities within the standard duration plus two semesters, and about €363 per semester after that. A lapsed admission costs the whole degree. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000, below Vienna or Innsbruck.

How we help

Medschool Experts reviews your transcript and course descriptions in a free transfer consultation, finds EU medical schools that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to Austria. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

Austrian students usually contact us in the weeks before a commission exam. They have counted their attempts and know exactly what is at stake, which is more than I can say for most students elsewhere.

I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015 at 24 and graduated in 2021. From that time I know how different the same subject feels at a university that examines in smaller steps. If one large exam keeps deciding against you, changing the format can be the smarter move than sitting it a fourth time.

Summary

Failing medical school in Austria is governed by the Universities Act. You have at least four attempts per exam, the later ones before a commission. A failed last repeat ends your admission, and the same university may not admit you to Medicine again. A new start elsewhere in Austria means the MedAT again.

A transfer to a medical school in another EU country is possible, the degree is recognised in Austria, and the Medical Chamber enters you in the register of doctors. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Conclusion

Do not go into a commission exam without a second plan. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which EU universities accept the courses you have already passed and how you come back to Austria as a doctor. Book your free transfer consultation.

Failing medical school in Austria: 7 questions and answers

How many exam attempts do I have in Medicine in Austria?

At least four. Section 77 of the Universities Act allows three repeats of every exam, and the statute of a university can add more. From the third repeat the exam is held before a commission.

What happens after the last failed repeat?

Your admission to the degree lapses under section 68 of the Universities Act. The same university may not admit you again to a degree in which that exam is compulsory.

Can I start again at another Austrian medical university?

Legally yes, but you would have to pass the MedAT again and win a place in the ranking.

Can I appeal a failed exam?

Not the grade itself. If the exam had a serious defect in how it was conducted, you can apply for annulment within two weeks of the result.

What is the minimum study performance?

Students admitted since the winter semester 2022 must reach 16 ECTS in the first four semesters. Otherwise the admission lapses and the degree is blocked at that university for two academic years.

Is a medical degree from another EU country recognised in Austria?

Yes. It is recognised under Directive 2005/36/EC, and the Austrian Medical Chamber enters you in the register of doctors.

Does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost anything?

No. The transfer consultation is free and without obligation.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. He is a federally recognised dentist.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester.
