Failing Medical School in Sweden? What to Do When Exam Attempts Run Out (2026)

Failing Medical School in Sweden? What to Do When Exam Attempts Run Out (2026)

Short answer

Failing medical school in Sweden? Exam attempts used up, blocked semester or CSN stopped: what happens now and how a transfer brings you back as a doctor.

At a glance

  • If a Swedish university limits exam attempts, it must allow at least five per exam and two per clinical placement
  • Karolinska Institutet limits both exams and placements to six attempts
  • An examiner can stop a placement at once for patient safety reasons, and that counts as a used attempt
  • CSN pays again only if you passed 62.5 percent of your credits in the first 40 weeks and 75 percent after that
  • About one in five Swedes who start Medicine do so abroad, most of them in EU countries
  • Coming back: an EU medical degree with the licence of the country of study is recognised, and Socialstyrelsen issues your Swedish licence
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

You worked for years to get into läkarprogrammet, and now one course decides everything. The last attempt is close, the study counsellor has no further option, and CSN is asking about your results.

Below you find how Swedish universities limit exam and placement attempts, what a stopped placement means, how the CSN thresholds work in credits, why capable students get stuck, and how a transfer to a medical school in another EU country brings you back to Sweden as a licensed doctor.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Exam attempts

In short: Swedish universities may limit how often you can take an exam. If they do, the Higher Education Ordinance requires at least five attempts per exam and at least two per clinical placement. Karolinska Institutet limits both exams and placements to six attempts. When the attempts on one course are used up, you get no further exam and no new course place at that university.

The limit is written in the course syllabus, not in a national rule for Medicine. Read the kursplan of the course that worries you and look for the heading on the limitation of examination and placement attempts. Only attempts where you were formally failed count, so a session you did not sit is normally not a used attempt.

A common pattern in the medical programmes: after three failed attempts you are advised to retake the whole course before you use the remaining three. That costs a semester, but it is the only point where the university actively changes your preparation.

Clinical placements

In short: A clinical placement (VFU) can be limited to as few as two attempts. The examiner can stop your placement with immediate effect if patient safety or patients' trust in healthcare is at risk. A stopped placement counts as failed, and one attempt is used.

After a placement stopped for these reasons you are not admitted to a new one straight away. The university first sets up an individual plan with the knowledge and skills you have to show, and only when that plan is completed do you get the next placement. With two attempts, a single stopped placement puts the whole degree on one remaining try.

Blocked semesters

In short: Courses in the Swedish medical programmes have entry requirements. A typical one: all credits from semesters 1 and 2 before you may sit the integrated exam that follows. One missing course therefore blocks the next step, and you wait a semester or a year.

Sweden changed its medical degree in autumn 2021 from 5.5 to six years. The last cohort of the old programme started in spring 2021. If you are on the old programme and fall behind, your courses are being closed down one by one, and you depend on the transition rules in each syllabus. For these students a lost year can mean that the course no longer exists in its old form.

CSN thresholds

In short: CSN checks your results before it pays again. In your first 40 full-time weeks you must pass 62.5 percent of the credits you received student finance for, after that 75 percent. For a full year of 60 credits that means 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits in every later year.

In the medical programme, single courses carry 15 to 30 credits. One failed block is therefore enough to fall below 45 of 60. Payments stop until you have caught up, and CSN accepts a lower result only for documented reasons such as illness.

Why students get stuck

In short: Medical students in Sweden who struggle rarely lack ability. The usual reasons are burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis, paid work beside the programme, exam anxiety and an undiagnosed learning difference.

Depression shows up quietly, as lectures replayed without taking in a word. It is treatable, and a studieuppehåll is a legitimate tool. If dyslexia or ADHD plays a part, the coordinator for students with disabilities can arrange support in exams.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Switch early

In short: If exams keep going wrong, switching university is often the better move, and the earlier the better. A transfer while you still have attempts left and your record is clean saves time and stress.

  • You have used three or more attempts on one exam.
  • You have failed a clinical placement once, or one was stopped.
  • An entry requirement has blocked your next semester.
  • You are below the CSN threshold and payments have stopped.
  • You are on the old 5.5-year programme and your courses are being closed down.

If two of these apply to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the next exam.

Next four weeks

  • Week 1: read the course syllabus, find the limit on attempts and count how many times you were formally failed.
  • Week 1 to 2: meet your study counsellor and ask what happens after the last attempt and which transition rules apply to you.
  • Week 2 to 3: if anxiety, low mood or reading speed play a part, contact student health and the disability coordinator. Send CSN the documents for illness.
  • Week 3 to 4: order your Ladok transcript in English and collect the syllabi of all passed courses.
  • Before the last attempt: book a free transfer consultation and compare staying with a transfer and a planned return to Sweden.

Transfer within the EU

In short: A transfer from a Swedish medical programme to an English-taught medical school in another EU country is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your Ladok transcript and course syllabi. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

You would not be the first. About one in five Swedes who start Medicine do so abroad. Latvia has been the most popular country since 2020, ahead of Poland and Romania, and Lithuania and Bulgaria have grown in recent years. Those who study in these countries come back to work as doctors in Sweden more often than those who study anywhere else.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

CSN student finance can be granted for studies abroad, including a loan for tuition fees. The same result thresholds apply there: 75 percent if you already had 40 weeks of student finance in Sweden.

Returning to Sweden

In short: Yes, you can come back. A medical degree from another EU country is recognised in Sweden under Directive 2005/36/EC. Socialstyrelsen issues your Swedish licence once you hold the full qualification of the country where you studied, including its own licence if that country requires one. After that you start bastjänstgöring (BT), the first part of specialist training.

This condition decides which country fits you. Some EU countries grant the right to practise with the diploma, others only after an internship and a state exam in the national language. Socialstyrelsen cannot assess your application before that step is done. We choose your university so that the way to the Swedish licence has no such obstacle.

EU graduates sit no knowledge test in Sweden. That test and the supplementary programme are meant for doctors trained outside the EU, and as a Swedish speaker you already meet the language side of the job.

Costs

In short: Studying in Sweden costs no tuition, but a blocked year costs a year of living expenses and a year of a doctor's salary later. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000, well below Stockholm or Gothenburg.

How we help

Medschool Experts reviews your Ladok transcript and course syllabi in a free transfer consultation, finds EU medical schools that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to Sweden. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021, and today nobody asks how old I was in my first semester. Swedish students who write to us often believe that a counter of attempts has decided their life. It has not. The counter belongs to one course at one university. Plan the next step while you still have attempts left. That is when the most doors are open.

Summary

In Sweden it is rarely one exam that ends a medical degree. It is the limit on attempts, a progression requirement that costs a year, and CSN rules that cut the money. Once the attempts on one course are gone, the programme cannot be finished at that university.

A transfer to a medical school in another EU country is possible, the degree is recognised in Sweden, and Socialstyrelsen issues your licence. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Conclusion

Do not spend your last attempt before you know your options. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which EU universities accept the courses you have already passed and how you come back to Sweden as a doctor. Book your free transfer consultation.

Failing medical school in Sweden: 7 questions and answers

How many exam attempts do I have in Swedish medical school?

That depends on your syllabus. If a university limits attempts, it must allow at least five per exam and at least two per clinical placement. Karolinska Institutet limits both to six.

Does a stopped clinical placement count as an attempt?

Yes. If the examiner stops your placement for patient safety reasons, you are failed on that part and one attempt is used.

What happens when my attempts are used up?

You get no further exam and no new course place, and without the course you cannot finish the programme at that university.

How many credits does CSN require?

62.5 percent in your first 40 full-time weeks and 75 percent after that. For 60 credits a year that is 37.5 and 45 credits.

Can I transfer from a Swedish medical programme to another EU country?

Yes. Medschool Experts organises transfers to English-taught medical schools in other EU countries. The receiving university assesses your Ladok transcript and course syllabi, and the year of entry depends on your profile.

Is a medical degree from another EU country recognised in Sweden?

Yes, under Directive 2005/36/EC. You need the full qualification of the country of study, and then Socialstyrelsen issues your Swedish licence.

Does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost anything?

No. The transfer consultation is free and without obligation.

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at 25+ partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. He is a federally recognised dentist.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad independent of your high school diploma grades: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
