Should You Retake Your A-Levels for Medicine? What a Resit Really Changes in 2026
20.10.2026
Short answer
Retaking A-levels for medicine costs one year and up to 30,000 €. Compare a 2026 resit with starting medicine in Europe in September or February.
What does retaking A-levels for medicine mean in 2026?
Retaking A-levels for medicine in 2026 means sitting one or more A-level exams again in the May and June 2027 exam series, receiving new results in August 2027 and applying to UK medical schools a second time. The earliest possible start is September 2027, one full year after your classmates.
Some students stay at their school for a thirteenth year. Others enrol at a tutorial college or study alone as private candidates and book exam entries at a centre. The application runs in parallel: the UCAS deadline for medicine is 15 October, so a resit candidate applies in autumn 2026 with the old grades on the form and the resit still ahead. The UCAT has to be taken again in the summer as well.
Put plainly, it is two exam seasons in one year. That is a lot of pressure.
How do UK medical schools treat A-level resits in general?
UK medical schools in 2026 treat A-level resits with caution. Many do not consider resit applicants at all unless documented extenuating circumstances such as illness or bereavement explain the first result. Others accept resits but ask for higher grades. Policies differ between schools and change from one admissions cycle to the next.
The reason is competition. For 2025 entry, 23,350 applicants had applied to UK medicine courses by the October deadline, and each applicant may list a maximum of four medicine courses. With that ratio, schools can choose first-time applicants with top grades and still fill every place.
A resit therefore does not reset the clock. It puts you into a smaller pool of schools that consider resits, often with a higher bar. Check each school's current policy before you pay for a single exam entry.
How much time does a resit year cost?
A resit year costs at least twelve months. If the new grades and a new offer arrive in August 2027, a five-year UK degree ends in 2032 instead of 2031. If the second application also fails, the loss grows to two years. Medicine in Europe, by contrast, can start in September 2026 or February 2027.
The chart shows the uncomfortable middle line. A resit is a bet on two things at once: better grades and an offer from a school that accepts resits. Both have to come true. The European route depends on neither.
| Step (2026 view) | Resit route (UK) | European route |
|---|---|---|
| August 2026 | Results below the offer | Results arrive, documents prepared |
| Autumn 2026 | Re-register for exams, new UCAS application by 15 October | First semester starts in September |
| Spring 2027 | Resit exams in May and June | Second semester, or February start |
| August 2027 | New results, offer confirmed or not | Year 1 completed |
| September 2027 | Year 1 if an offer holds | Year 2 |
| Graduation | 2032 at the earliest | 2032 (September start) or early 2033 |
The table follows the calendar of a student whose results arrive in August 2026. In the resit column, nothing counts towards a degree until September 2027 at the earliest.
What does a resit year cost in money?
A resit year in 2026 costs anywhere from about 900 € for exam entries as a private candidate to 15,000 to 30,000 € for a full year at an independent tutorial college. Add tutoring, a new UCAT and living costs. The largest item comes later: one year less of earnings as a doctor.
Exam entries for private candidates usually cost a few hundred euros per subject once the centre fee is included, so three subjects come close to 900 €. Tutoring at 40 to 60 € an hour adds up fast; two sessions a week over a school year passes 4,000 €. A full-time year at a tutorial college sits at the top of the range.
The last bar matters most. In England a first-year doctor earns a basic salary of 41,226 pounds from April 2026, about 47,400 €. Every year of delay moves the whole career back by one year. The year you lose is paid for at the end, at a senior salary.
Can you start medicine in Europe in the same year instead?
Yes. With A-level results from summer 2026, a student can start medicine in English at one of the 25+ European partner universities of Medschool Experts in September 2026, and at some faculties in February 2027. The place is independent of your high-school diploma grades: neither the grade average nor an entrance test decides it.
A-levels count as the school-leaving qualification. Chemistry and biology make the first year easier, because anatomy, histology and biochemistry start in week one. Partner faculties in Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Romania teach the full programme in English, six years in human medicine and five to five and a half in dentistry.
Medschool Experts handles the placement from the document check to enrolment. Which university fits depends on your profile and budget, so the first step is a free consultation. The faculties themselves are listed on the universities page.
Resit or Europe: how do the first two years compare?
Over the first two years from results day in August 2026, a resit student spends year one preparing for exams and year two, at best, in the first year of a UK course. A student who starts in Europe in September 2026 completes the first two years of medicine in the same period, with anatomy and physiology already passed.
| Cost item, 2026 | Resit year | First year in Foča | First year in Sofia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition or tutoring | 4,000 to 30,000 € | 3,500 € | 10,000 € |
| Exam entries | about 900 € | none | none |
| Living costs, 12 months | at home or about 9,000 € | about 6,000 € | about 7,800 € |
| Progress towards the diploma | 0 years | 1 year | 1 year |
The resit year has a cost but no credit. The first year in Foča or Sofia costs a similar amount and produces a year of the degree. Foča in Bosnia and Herzegovina charges 3,500 € a year, the lowest tuition among our partner faculties. The Medical University of Sofia charges 10,000 € a year.
{{cta}}Worked cost example: six years in Europe against a resit and five years in the UK
For a complete medical degree from 2026, tuition totals about 56,300 € for five years in England, 60,000 € for six years at the Medical University of Sofia, 54,000 € at the Medical University of Pleven and 21,000 € in Foča. Living costs and the year lost to a resit change the picture further.
My calculation for Sofia: 10,000 € tuition a year over six years is 60,000 €. Living costs of 650 € a month for 72 months add 46,800 €, and four flights home a year at about 150 € each add 3,600 €. Total: around 110,400 €.
And for Foča: 3,500 € a year over six years is 21,000 €. Living costs of about 500 € a month add 36,000 €. Total: around 57,000 €, including flights only a little more.
The UK with a resit: 9,790 pounds a year over five years is 48,950 pounds, about 56,300 €. Add maintenance, which in London alone runs well above 1,000 € a month, plus the resit year itself and one year of delayed salary. The sum is not lower. It is later.
Tuition at our partner universities is paid per year or per semester, never as one lump sum. Medschool Experts also arranges financing for the full degree at the University of East Sarajevo in Foča on request.
Is a European medical degree recognised in the UK?
A medical degree from an EU university is recognised automatically in all 27 member states under Directive 2005/36/EC, which sets at least five years and 5,500 hours of training. For the UK, graduates register with the General Medical Council. Depending on the qualification and the rules in force at graduation, this happens directly or through PLAB 1 and PLAB 2.
PLAB is an established route used by thousands of international graduates every year, and it leads to the same Foundation-level jobs and the same pay scale. The steps are set out in the article on PLAB and GMC registration. Graduates who prefer to stay in the EU apply directly for a licence in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands or any other member state.
So a European diploma does not close the UK door. It opens it from a different side.
International perspective: how this works in other countries
Resits and second attempts work very differently from country to country, and the UK sits at the strict end. In Germany, medical places are allocated mainly through the Abitur grade and a test, and the old waiting-time quota, which rewarded years of waiting, was abolished in 2020. Improving the Abitur grade after school is practically impossible, so a German student who misses the cut cannot buy a second attempt the way a British student can.
In Ireland, students can repeat the Leaving Certificate and sit the medical aptitude test again, and the higher result can count. Repeating is common there, but competition for medicine is just as intense as in the UK. In the United States, the idea of a school-exam resit does not exist for medicine: students first complete a four-year bachelor's degree, and those who want a stronger academic record take a post-baccalaureate year. In Australia, school-leaver entry depends on the final school ranking plus an aptitude test, while many universities teach medicine only as a graduate degree after a bachelor's.
Across all four systems one pattern repeats. Where places depend on school grades, a missed grade costs time. Many students from the UK, Ireland and Germany therefore take the European route, where the place does not hang on a single exam season.
When does a resit still make sense?
A resit makes sense when three things are true at once in 2026: the missed grade was close, there is a documented reason such as illness, and studying in the UK specifically matters more than a year of time and the cost involved. Students who meet all three should check which UK schools consider resits before booking exams.
For everyone else the comparison is simple. A year of preparation versus a year of medicine. Students who want to keep both options open sometimes start in Europe and leave the UK as the place to work later. The student stories show how different those paths look in practice.
The author's view
At Shrewsbury School I saw how much weight two years of A-levels carry. Most of my classmates with three science subjects reached the top grades. Even so, the whole plan rested on one exam season in May and June, and everyone knew it.
When I enrolled in Sofia in 2015 at 24, the first year group came from more than 60 countries. Some students had come straight from school, others a year or two later. By the second semester nobody could tell who was who. By graduation in 2021 the only thing that mattered was the diploma.
My assessment: a resit is worth it only when the UK specifically is the goal and the missed grade had a clear reason. In every other case I would rather see a student spend that year in anatomy than in the same exam hall. That is an opinion, built on years of placement experience at Medschool Experts.
Summary
- A resit year moves the start of a UK medical degree to September 2027 at the earliest, and a second failed application costs two years.
- Many UK medical schools consider resit applicants only with extenuating circumstances, and some ask for higher grades.
- A resit year costs from about 900 € in exam entries to 15,000 to 30,000 € at a tutorial college, plus one year of doctor pay later.
- Medicine in English at 25+ European partner universities can start in September 2026 or February 2027, independent of your high-school diploma grades.
- Six years in Foča cost around 57,000 € including living costs; six years in Sofia around 110,400 €.
- EU medical degrees are recognised across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC, and the UK is reachable through GMC registration and, where required, PLAB.
Conclusion
A resit is a second ticket for the same draw. It can work, but it costs a year before anything counts towards the degree, and the UK system rarely rewards it.

Frequently asked questions about retaking A-levels for medicine
Do UK medical schools accept A-level resits?
Some do, many do not. In 2026 a large share of UK medical schools consider resit applicants only when documented extenuating circumstances explain the first result, and several that accept resits ask for higher grades. Policies vary by school and change each cycle, so each school's current policy has to be checked before a resit is booked.
How long does an A-level resit for medicine take?
A resit takes one full year. Students whose results arrive in August 2026 sit the resit exams in May and June 2027, receive new results in August 2027 and can start a UK medical degree in September 2027 at the earliest. If the second application fails, the delay grows to two years.
How much does it cost to retake A-levels?
Exam entries as a private candidate cost a few hundred euros per subject including centre fees, close to 900 € for three subjects in 2026. Tutoring can add 4,000 € or more over a year, and a full-time year at an independent tutorial college costs about 15,000 to 30,000 €. Living costs and a new UCAT come on top.
Can I study medicine in Europe with my current A-level grades?
Yes. Medschool Experts places students at 25+ European partner universities, where the place is independent of your high-school diploma grades. A-levels count as the school-leaving qualification, and chemistry and biology help in the first year. Which university fits depends on the individual profile, assessed in a free consultation.
When can I start medicine in Europe after A-level results?
Most European partner faculties start in September, so students with results from August 2026 can begin the same autumn. Some faculties also take students in February, which allows a start in February 2027. Medicine takes six years, so a September 2026 start leads to graduation in 2032.
Is a European medical degree valid in the UK?
A European medical degree leads to registration with the General Medical Council. Depending on the qualification and the rules at graduation, registration happens directly or after PLAB 1 and PLAB 2. PLAB-registered doctors enter the same Foundation-level posts and pay scale as UK graduates, with a basic salary of 41,226 pounds in year one from April 2026.
Is a resit year cheaper than a first year abroad?
Not necessarily. A full resit year at a tutorial college costs 15,000 to 30,000 €, while the first year in Foča costs 3,500 € in tuition and about 6,000 € in living costs. The resit year produces no progress towards a degree; the first year abroad completes one sixth of it.
