Study medicine in Tetovo, at the University of Tetovo, is one of the health-study options in western North Macedonia, in a city where Albanian is the dominant language. Students, applicants and parents often ask how long the programmes last, what they cost, how they are taught and what happens when studies do not progress as expected.

This guide describes the General Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy programmes of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, the list prices and the legal framework of the country. It also says clearly which information, such as the exact exam regulations and the time limit for studies, we did not find published, and what you should request in writing from the student office.

We also describe, in our experience, why some students choose to transfer their studies to a university outside North Macedonia, and how a transfer works. If you have lost your student status, there is a separate section. Nobody can promise re-enrolment or admission, and we examine every case individually. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Can you study medicine in Tetovo, and which health programmes does the University of Tetovo offer?

In short: The University of Tetovo was founded in 1994 and is a public university in Tetovo in western North Macedonia. Its Faculty of Medical Sciences offers General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Aesthetics, and there are specialisation programmes for nurses in the second cycle.

Tetovo is a city in western North Macedonia, close to Skopje, and its university was founded on 17 December 1994. It was recognised as a state university by the government of the country in January 2004. Today it comprises many faculties, from Economics and Law to the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

In the first cycle the Faculty of Medical Sciences offers three integrated programmes that concern most of our readers: General Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. Alongside them run three-year programmes in Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Aesthetics. In the second cycle, specialisations for nurses are offered, such as Intensive Care, Mental Health and Family Care.

We did not find a veterinary medicine programme at the University of Tetovo. If you are interested in veterinary medicine in North Macedonia, read our comparison article on all health universities of the country.

How long do Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy take in Tetovo?

In short: General Medicine lasts 12 semesters, which means six years and 360 ECTS. Dentistry and Pharmacy last 10 semesters and 300 ECTS. The degree titles are Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Medicine and Master of Pharmacy, with a six-month practical placement in Pharmacy.

ProgrammeSemestersECTSDegree title
General Medicine12360Doctor of Medicine
Dentistry10300Doctor of Dental Medicine
Pharmacy10300Master of Pharmacy
Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Aesthetics6180First-cycle degree

The durations match the framework set by the higher-education law of North Macedonia. For Medicine, six years of study are provided, which is 12 semesters and 360 ECTS. For Dentistry and Pharmacy the law sets a minimum of ten semesters and 300 ECTS, and Pharmacy includes a six-month practical placement.

The structure follows the European ECTS system: as a rule, each semester corresponds to 30 credits. This makes comparison with other European universities easier, and it is the reason why the transcript with ECTS credits is the key document in any study transfer.

Details such as the names of the courses and the distribution of ECTS credits per year are set by the faculty curriculum and may be revised. Always ask the student office for the current curriculum before you plan anything.

How much does it cost to study medicine at the University of Tetovo?

In short: In the 2025/26 price list, local students pay €100 per semester in state-funded places and €200 in co-financed places. International students pay €1,000 per semester, which is €2,000 per year, unless a cooperation agreement provides otherwise. Prices are reviewed every year.

Student categoryList price 2025/26
Local student, state-funded place€100 per semester
Local student, co-financed place€200 per semester
International student€1,000 per semester, €2,000 per year

These prices apply to the three programmes General Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy and refer to the academic year 2025/26. Fees are reviewed every year, and you should check the current announcement for the year in which you start. We did not find a published price for an English-language programme.

Low tuition is one of the reasons that attract students. The family budget, however, also includes accommodation, living costs, laboratory materials and additional semesters if the studies are prolonged. For a realistic picture, compare the total cost until graduation with alternatives in other European countries.

In which language is teaching held at the University of Tetovo?

In short: The University of Tetovo mainly serves Albanian-speaking students, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences is described as an option for those who want to study in Albanian. We did not find a published description of a fully English-language Medicine programme, so the language must be confirmed in writing.

Tetovo is a centre of the Albanian-speaking community of North Macedonia, and the university was founded to offer higher education in the Albanian language. The faculty is described as one of the preferred choices for people who want to study in Albanian.

The published announcements of the faculty do not state the language of instruction per programme. For an international student that has great practical importance: if teaching is mainly in Albanian, you need an excellent command of the language from the first day, for lectures, practicals, oral exams and clinical contact with patients.

In our experience, English-language programmes in the country in general are not always taught entirely in English, because lecturers with sufficient English are lacking. If you find a programme declared as English-language, ask in writing what share of the courses and exams is actually held in English.

Is there a maximum study duration in Tetovo, and does the Greek n+ rule apply?

In short: The Greek n+ rule does not apply. It comes from Greek law 4957/2022, as amended by law 5224/2025, and concerns only Greek public universities. In Tetovo, the university regulations and the national higher-education law apply, with their own time limits. We did not find a published limit for Medicine.

Students and parents from Greece know the n+ rule and often assume it applies everywhere. The Greek provision sets a maximum study period and leads to deletion when it is exceeded. It concerns institutions that fall under Greek legislation.

The University of Tetovo is an institution of North Macedonia. The length of studies, progression from year to year and the interruption of studies are regulated by the regulations of the university and by the national law. Conclusions you have read about Greek universities should not be transferred to this case, and the time limits should not be assumed to be the same.

As for the specific limits at Tetovo, we did not find a published maximum duration for Medicine, so we do not quote a number. The next section explains how to request this information in writing.

Which information on exams and progression should you request in writing from the student office?

In short: Ask in writing for the current study regulations, the maximum duration, the number of permitted attempts per course, the ECTS required for progression and the rules on pauses. File every answer, because you will need it for any future decision or study transfer. What is not published must be requested in writing.

For Tetovo, the detailed regulation on exams and progression was not available in a form we could quote with precision. Instead of giving you numbers that we have not verified, we suggest a clear list of questions for the student office:

  • Which study regulations apply to my programme, and from which date?
  • What is the maximum study duration, and what happens when it is used up?
  • How many times can I sit an exam in a course, and when is a committee required?
  • How many ECTS do I need to enrol in the next year?
  • How does a pause in studies work, and how is student status renewed after an interruption?
  • In which language are the lectures and the exams of each course held?
  • Where and in which groups does clinical training take place?

Send the questions by e-mail and keep the answer. A written reply is valuable for a transfer file as well, because the receiving university will want to understand the rules that applied at the institution of origin.

How are teaching, practical training and clinical experience organised?

In short: In Medicine, the first half of the studies covers the basic sciences and the second half the clinical subjects, with practical training in hospitals. Pharmacy includes a six-month placement. The critical points are the capacity and the language of the practical training, and it is worth investigating them early.

In every six-year Medicine programme, the first cycles cover the basic sciences such as Anatomy, Histology, Physiology and Biochemistry. The pre-clinical and clinical courses follow and, at the end, intensive practice in hospital clinics. Dentistry adds simulation laboratories and clinical work with patients.

The most meaningful question in Medicine is not how many hours are planned on paper, but how many students share each trainer and each clinical group, and what exactly the student does in front of the patient. In Dentistry the corresponding question concerns the number of dental chairs and patients per student.

Pharmacy, under the national law, includes a six-month practical placement. Ask the student office where and when it takes place, and whether the language of the placement is the same as the language of the lectures.

Why do some medicine students struggle or want to continue elsewhere than Tetovo?

In short: In our experience the reasons are the language of instruction, a shortage of lecturers who speak English well, limited capacity for practical training and difficulty with progression. They are rarely a question of the student's own ability, and they can often be addressed with an early decision.

In our experience, the quality of teaching at universities in North Macedonia is lower than at comparable European universities. We say this as a professional assessment from our daily work with students, not as a ranking, and it does not concern any individual lecturer. The students who write to us describe four recurring themes.

  • Language of instruction: students expect a fully English-taught course and find that part of the material is taught in Macedonian or in a mix of languages.
  • Staff: lecturers who are comfortable teaching in English are in short supply, so the material is passed on with less depth than students hoped for.
  • Practical training: places in laboratories and clinics are limited compared with the number of students, and groups are large.
  • Progression: courses pile up, exams are repeated and there is little academic guidance along the way.
  • Language barrier: students who speak neither Albanian nor Macedonian find it hard to follow lectures, practicals and oral exams.

Personal reasons often come on top: distance from family, the cost of living, or the wish to build a career in another European country. For anyone who plans to work abroad, the university that awards the degree matters in practice, because it decides which recognition procedures the graduate has to follow later.

None of this means that every student is unhappy or that every course is weak. It means that if you recognise several of these points in your own situation, it is sensible to look at your options calmly and early rather than at the last exam attempt.

Why do so many students transfer out of North Macedonia every year?

In short: In our experience, for the reasons described above, many students move every year through Medschool Experts to universities outside North Macedonia. They usually look for fuller English-language teaching, stronger clinical training or an EU degree, and every transfer is assessed individually.

Every year we accompany students from North Macedonian universities to other universities in Europe. This is not a statistic or a ranking. It is simply our daily work: the enquiries we receive and the files we prepare.

The common point is usually the need for a clearer framework: teaching in a language the student fully understands, organised clinical training and a prospect of professional development in another country. For some it is also the occasion for a fresh start after difficult semesters.

A transfer does not mean that everything you have done is lost. The courses you have passed are reviewed by the receiving university, and in many cases part of them can be credited. There is no promise of recognition or admission, because the decision belongs to the university and depends on the case.

How do you decide between staying, pausing and transferring?

In short: The decision rests on three questions: how far you are from the degree, whether the problem is temporary or structural, and what your professional plan is. An early review of your options costs less in time and money than a late decision, and it lets you decide calmly.

There is no single right answer for everyone. A first-year student with one failed course has different options from a fourth-year student who is already facing clinical duties. Three questions help most.

  • How far away is the degree? The more years you have completed, the more it is worth checking how a new university would credit your courses.
  • Is the problem temporary or structural? A hard period may be solved by a pause in studies. The language of instruction or limited clinical training, by contrast, does not change from one semester to the next.
  • What is your professional plan? If you want to work in another country, the university that awards your degree has practical consequences.

In every case the first move is to get the written facts in your hands: the regulations, your enrolment status and your transcript. Then compare the options calmly. Medschool Experts helps at exactly this stage, so that your decision rests on documents and not on rumours or time pressure.

How does a transfer from Tetovo to a European university work?

In short: The process starts with a review of your transcript and ECTS credits, continues with a selection of universities from the 25+ partners of Medschool Experts and ends with the preparation of your file. The receiving university always decides on credit recognition and the year of entry, depending on the case.

A study transfer is a complex process, because it combines credit recognition, the right year of entry, documents from two countries and deadlines. The experts at Medschool Experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers worldwide and take over the whole process.

  • Review: we examine your transcript, ECTS credits, curriculum and study history.
  • Selection: we suggest universities from our 25+ partners in Europe that fit your profile and your budget.
  • File: we prepare the documents, the translations and the communication with the receiving university.
  • Decision: the receiving university decides on credit recognition and the year of entry, depending on the case.

Do not wait until you have used up every semester or every exam attempt before asking for information. The earlier the review, the more options you have and the more calmly you can decide without time pressure.

How do you read your transcript and ECTS credits when you think about a transfer?

In short: The transcript with ECTS credits is the key document of any transfer. The receiving university compares the courses you have passed with its own curriculum. The clearer and more complete your file, the more accurate the assessment of your possible year of entry will be.

A transcript lists every course you have taken, the grade, the ECTS credits and the semester. In a transfer, the receiving university does not only look at the total number of credits. It examines the content of each course, the number of hours and the level.

For this reason it is useful to ask the student office not only for the transcript but also for the description of the courses you have passed. Basic subjects such as anatomy, physiology and biochemistry are usually credited more smoothly when the content and the workload are documented.

Failed attempts, pauses and repeated courses also appear in your history. They are not a reason for concern, but information that has to be presented correctly and clearly. Our experts help with the precise wording of the file.

What do professional recognition and Directive 2005/36/EC mean for you?

In short: Directive 2005/36/EC regulates the recognition of professional qualifications for degrees awarded in EU and EEA member states. For degrees from third countries, separate national procedures apply in each country. Anyone who plans to work abroad should think about this at the start, before choosing a university.

Directive 2005/36/EC governs the recognition of professional qualifications between the member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area. For professions such as doctor, dentist and pharmacist it sets minimum training requirements, which allow a degree to be recognised under common rules.

North Macedonia is not a member state of the EU. For degrees awarded there, each destination country applies its own procedure with its own conditions, which may include an additional check of documents or examinations and differ considerably from country to country. We do not judge any programme here. We describe the framework.

For anyone who knows they want to work in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands or another European country, it is reasonable to check early whether the university that awards the degree falls under the common European framework. That is why a transfer to a university in an EU member state is an option that deserves serious thought.

What can you do if you have lost your student status?

In short: Ask in writing for the decision and your transcript, and ask the student office how your student status can be restored. In parallel, Medschool Experts examines alternative routes at European universities and prepares your file. There is no promise of re-enrolment or admission.

If your studies in Tetovo have been interrupted or you have lost your student status, the first step is to find out exactly what happened. Ask the university in writing for the decision, its legal basis and your transcript, and ask whether there is a procedure for appeal, review or reactivation and which deadline applies.

In parallel, we look at alternative routes with you. First, we check which courses you have passed and which years you have completed. Second, we look for universities in Europe where your case can be examined. Third, we prepare the file and take over the communication with the institutions.

We cannot promise re-admission, admission to another university or the recognition of all your courses. In some cases the new route starts in a lower year than you would like, and it is important to know that from the beginning. In our experience, students who ask for help early have more options.

Which documents do you need and which mistakes should you avoid before you decide?

In short: For the first review we need your transcript with ECTS credits, the curriculum, an identity document and your school-leaving certificate. Avoid waiting for the last exam attempt and enrolling elsewhere without checking credit recognition. A transfer is best prepared with time.

  • Transcript with courses, grades and ECTS credits
  • The current curriculum for your intake year
  • Identity card or passport and school-leaving certificate
  • Certificates of enrolment, pause or interruption of studies
  • The university's decision, if your student status has been interrupted

Ask the student office to issue the documents in English and with a stamp. You do not have to have everything ready before you contact us, because we guide you step by step.

The usual mistakes: waiting until all attempts are used up, giving up your student status before an alternative exists, deciding on the basis of rumours or verbal assurances, and paying a deposit to a new university before the year of entry and the total cost have been checked. A calm, early review of your options saves time and money.

The author's view

I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, and graduated in 2021. Most of my classmates were five years younger, and I often felt late. That feeling is common among students who see their plans change halfway through their studies.

I am the founder and owner of Medschool Experts and a federally recognised dentist. In my experience, students who contact us rarely lack ability. Behind the problem there is usually the language of instruction, a lack of guidance or limited practical training. The earlier you look at your options, the more you keep in your own hands.

Summary

The University of Tetovo offers General Medicine (12 semesters, 360 ECTS), Dentistry and Pharmacy (10 semesters, 300 ECTS). In the 2025/26 price list, international students pay €2,000 per year. The Greek n+ rule does not apply, and the detailed exam regulations and the time limit for studies should be requested in writing from the student office.

In our experience, some students look for teaching in a language they master and stronger practical training. For anyone who is thinking about it, or who has already lost their student status, Medschool Experts examines the options for a transfer to European universities individually.
