Transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan: Where to Continue Medicine in 2026

Transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan: Where to Continue Medicine in 2026

Short answer

ISM Kyrgyzstan transfer to Europe in 2026: how credits are recognised, costs from €1,750 per semester and how to avoid losing a year. Free consultation.

Students of the International School of Medicine of the International University of Kyrgyzstan (ISM-IUK) in Bishkek can transfer to a medical university in Europe in 2026; Medschool Experts plans and carries out the transfer, and the consultation is free.

Most of the messages we get from ISM students arrive late in the evening, Bishkek time. A student has just seen a resit result on the portal, or has done the maths on another year of fees in US dollars, and wants to know one thing: does the work of the last two or three years still count somewhere? Usually it does. The answer depends on the transcript, not on the mood of that evening.

This guide is written by Marcel Kloos, founder and owner of Medschool Experts and a federally recognised dentist. He started his own dentistry degree in Sofia at 24 and has since helped more than 500 students into medical programmes across Europe.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Is a transfer from the International School of Medicine Kyrgyzstan possible in 2026?

Yes. A transfer from the International School of Medicine (ISM) at the International University of Kyrgyzstan to a medical university in Europe is possible in 2026. Medschool Experts compares the ISM transcript with the curriculum of a European partner faculty, which then decides how many semesters are credited and which year the student joins.

Quick answer

Students at ISM Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek can continue Medicine in Europe in 2026. Medschool Experts checks the transcript, matches it with European partner universities that take transfer students, and handles the application. Credits are recognised course by course. The first consultation is free.

ISM belongs to the International University of Kyrgyzstan, a private university founded in Bishkek in 1993. The medical school teaches a five-year English-taught General Medicine programme for international students on its Eastern Medical Campus on 7 April Street, with clinical teaching at the university clinic and affiliated hospitals in the capital.

That structure matters for a transfer. A European faculty does not look at the name on the diploma. It looks at subjects, contact hours and grades. A clean transcript from ISM after year two or three is a solid starting point.

Failed exams at ISM Kyrgyzstan: what now?

Failing exams or a whole year at ISM Kyrgyzstan in 2026 does not end a medical career. Medschool Experts regularly works with ISM students who have open resits, and a European partner faculty can still accept them, provided the number of open exams stays small and the passed subjects match its own curriculum.

The rule of thumb we work with: usually no more than two exams may still be open, and the credits attached to them must stay below a set maximum. Every faculty draws that line a little differently, so we check each case on its own.

From the student's side, the reasons behind a failed year are rarely mysterious. Some fall behind because the exam rhythm at ISM is dense and a single missed module drags the next one with it. Others pass the theory comfortably but struggle once patient histories are taken in Russian or Kyrgyz. Some simply ran out of money halfway through a semester and stopped attending. None of this says anything about talent.

What helps most is speed. A student who calls us in June, with grades still fresh and documents still easy to get, has far more options than one who waits until the next academic year has already started.

Why do students consider a transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan to Europe?

Students consider a transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan to Europe in 2026 for practical reasons: budget, the language used with patients in the clinical years, the exam rhythm, and above all their career goal. Medschool Experts sees that most ISM students who ask about a transfer want to work as doctors in Europe, the UK, the USA or the Gulf.

The reasons we hear most often in our consultations:

  • Budget. ISM fees are billed in US dollars. A stronger dollar or a family income that changes mid-course can turn a planned budget upside down within a year.
  • Language on the wards. Lectures run in English, but from the clinical years onward patients in Bishkek speak Russian or Kyrgyz. Students who never got comfortable with either feel this most in year three.
  • Exam rhythm. Some students do better with a different assessment structure, for example fewer but larger exams, or more continuous assessment.
  • Career goal. Students who want to work in the EU often prefer an EU degree, because it is recognised automatically across EU member states.
  • Distance and family. Bishkek is a long way from home for many students, and personal circumstances change.

None of these reasons is a verdict on ISM. They are about fit.

A note for students from India

India's National Medical Commission, in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, requires the whole course, the training and the internship to be completed at the same foreign institution for the Indian licence. A transfer therefore suits students whose career goal lies in Europe, the UK, the USA or the Gulf. We check every Indian case individually in the free consultation.

How are credits from the International School of Medicine Kyrgyzstan recognised in Europe?

Credits from the International School of Medicine Kyrgyzstan are recognised in Europe course by course in 2026. The receiving faculty compares each ISM subject with its own curriculum by content, contact hours and exam result, converts the hours into ECTS credits and then decides which subjects are credited and which year the student enters.

For that comparison we need three things: an official transcript with grades and hours, the syllabi for each subject, and proof of the semesters completed. Syllabi are the part students underestimate. A line reading "Physiology – passed" tells a European dean very little. A two-page description with topics, practicals and hours tells them almost everything.

Kyrgyz programmes count study load in credits and contact hours. European faculties work in ECTS, where one academic year equals 60 credits and one credit stands for 25 to 30 hours of student work. Where the ISM documents give only hours, the receiving faculty converts them, which is why complete hour counts matter so much.

How transfers work elsewhere helps to put this in context. Inside the EU, the ECTS system was built so that credits can travel between universities, and a faculty can place a student into a higher year when the content matches. In the UK, medical schools rarely take students into later years; doctors with a degree from outside the UK usually reach UK practice through the PLAB exams and registration with the General Medical Council. In the USA, transfers into medical school are rare too, and international graduates go through ECFMG certification with USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK before residency. For an ISM student who wants to keep the years already studied, a European faculty is therefore the most direct route.

Which European universities accept transfer students from ISM Kyrgyzstan?

Several European universities accept transfer students from ISM Kyrgyzstan in 2026, but Medschool Experts does not publish a list. Capacity for transfer students changes each semester, and the right faculty depends on the individual transcript. Medschool Experts works with partner universities in Europe that take transfer students specifically for this situation.

A study transfer is a complex undertaking. Our experts have almost 10 years of experience in study transfers worldwide, which is why they plan and carry it out confidently. The consultation is free.

One limitation we always mention: places for transfer students are limited, and some faculties fill their quota for the next intake months in advance. That is the main reason we ask ISM students not to wait until the last week of August.

What does studying in Europe cost compared with ISM Kyrgyzstan fees?

ISM Kyrgyzstan tuition is set in US dollars and currently runs at about USD 4,600 to 8,000 a year, depending on intake and year of study. English-taught Medicine and Dentistry at the European partner universities of Medschool Experts starts from €1,750 per semester in 2026, so from €3,500 a year.

The other from-prices at our European partner universities: Pharmacy from €1,500 per semester and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000 per semester. These are starting prices; the exact figure depends on the university and the programme.

Living costs are the other half of the budget. In Bishkek, students usually spend about €200 to €400 a month. In the European cities where our partner universities sit, costs are higher in some places and comparable in others, and we go through a realistic monthly budget in the consultation.

Can I transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan without losing a year?

Many students transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan without losing a year in 2026. Whether that works depends on how closely the ISM subjects match the European curriculum and on timing. European faculties often place transfer students into higher years, and Medschool Experts checks each transcript individually before the application.

The biggest risk to the year is not the credits. It is the calendar. Students who start the process in spring can usually be placed for the winter semester; students who start in September often have to aim for February.

Where a faculty asks for a missing subject, it is common to sit that exam alongside the new semester rather than repeating the year. We help with the application without loss of time and keep the career on track.

What does the 2026 accreditation review in Kyrgyzstan mean for students at ISM?

In 2026 Kyrgyzstan's Ministry of Health reviewed its medical universities, and 13 institutions did not receive accreditation. The International University of Kyrgyzstan, home of ISM, is among the four institutions that received state accreditation for the full six-year term, so ISM students can continue their studies in Bishkek.

The review still changed the mood among international students across the country. Many began asking where their degree will lead, not only whether it is valid. That is a fair question.

For ISM students who want to stay in Bishkek, the result is good news. For those who want an EU degree because they plan to work in Europe, a transfer is the option worth checking, and the earlier it is checked the more choice there is.

Can I continue from ISM Kyrgyzstan towards the USMLE, the UK or the Gulf?

Yes. Students who transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan to a European medical university in 2026 can keep a USMLE, UK or Gulf career in view. Some of the European partner universities of Medschool Experts offer very strong USMLE preparation, with pass rates of up to 100 % in the last two years.

For the USA, an EU medical degree leads into ECFMG certification and the USMLE Steps. For the UK, the usual path for international graduates runs through the PLAB exams. In the Gulf states, licensing authorities set their own exams and look closely at where and how the degree was earned.

We plan this from the first call. A student aiming at a residency in Texas needs a different university than one who wants to work in Dubai or London.

Is MBBS in Europe a realistic next step after ISM Kyrgyzstan?

MBBS in Europe is a realistic next step after ISM Kyrgyzstan for many students in 2026. European faculties teach Medicine in English, award an EU degree, and with Medschool Experts the credits earned at ISM count towards the new programme instead of starting again in year one.

The term MBBS is used mostly in South Asia. In Europe the degree is usually called a Doctor of Medicine or simply a degree in General Medicine, with six years of study. It covers the same ground.

Weather is a small thing, but students mention it. After Bishkek winters, when January mornings stay well below freezing, a semester in southern or central Europe feels different. More important is the clinical language: at many European partner universities students still need the local language on the wards, and we prepare them for that before they arrive.

How does a transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan work with Medschool Experts, step by step?

A transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan with Medschool Experts takes six steps and usually four to seven months in 2026: free consultation, document collection, course-by-course comparison, application to a European partner university, credit decision, then visa and enrolment. Medschool Experts coordinates each step with the student and the receiving faculty.

  1. Free consultation. We look at the current ISM transcript, open exams and the career goal.
  2. Transcript and syllabi. The student requests official documents from ISM; we tell them exactly what to ask for.
  3. Course-by-course check. We compare subjects and hours with the curricula of suitable partner faculties.
  4. Application. We prepare and submit the application to the selected European partner university.
  5. Credit decision. The faculty decides which subjects are credited and which year the student joins.
  6. Visa and enrolment. We support the visa, housing and enrolment until the first day of lectures.

The slowest step is usually the second. Official documents with stamps, and translations where needed, take weeks rather than days. Requesting them early saves a semester.

The author's view

I started dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia in 2015, at 24, a few years older than most of my classmates. I know the feeling of sitting in a lecture hall far from home and wondering whether the plan still makes sense. That doubt is normal. It does not mean the plan was wrong, only that it needs checking.

What I notice with students from ISM Kyrgyzstan is how much they already have. Many arrive with good grades in the preclinical subjects and a transcript that a European dean can work with. The problem is rarely the student. It is usually timing, money or a language barrier on the wards that nobody mentioned at the start.

My advice is simple: do not let a bad semester decide your career, and do not wait for things to fix themselves. Ask for your transcript and syllabi now, even if you are not sure yet. Having the papers in hand costs nothing and keeps every door open.

Summary

  • Students of the International School of Medicine (ISM) at the International University of Kyrgyzstan can transfer to a medical university in Europe in 2026.
  • Credits from ISM Kyrgyzstan are recognised course by course, based on the transcript, syllabi and contact hours converted into ECTS.
  • Usually no more than two exams may still be open at the time of the transfer, and their credits must stay below a set maximum.
  • English-taught Medicine and Dentistry at our European partner universities starts from €1,750 per semester, Pharmacy from €1,500 and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000.
  • Students from India should know that the National Medical Commission requires the whole course and internship at one foreign institution for the Indian licence.
  • A transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan with Medschool Experts takes about four to seven months, and the first consultation is free.

Conclusion

Two or three years at ISM in Bishkek are not wasted if the plan changes. They are a transcript, and a transcript can be read, compared and credited. The students who do best with a transfer are the ones who look at their options while the documents are still easy to get and the next intake is still open.

Frequently Asked Questions about a transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan

Do I need an agency to transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan to Europe?

You can try alone, but most students underestimate the work. A transfer needs the right faculty, complete documents, a course-by-course comparison and an application that arrives before the transfer quota is full. Medschool Experts handles this for ISM students and works with European partner universities that take transfer students specifically for this case.

Will I lose a year if I transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan?

Not necessarily. European faculties often place transfer students into higher years when the ISM subjects match their curriculum. Whether a year is lost depends mainly on the content match and on timing. Students who start the process in spring have the best chance of moving without a gap.

I failed a year at ISM Kyrgyzstan. Can I still transfer?

Yes, in many cases. What counts is the number of open exams and the credits attached to them. As a rule of thumb, usually no more than two exams may still be open, and their credits must stay below a maximum set by the receiving faculty. We check every case individually.

How many credits from ISM Kyrgyzstan are recognised?

There is no fixed number. The receiving faculty compares each subject by content, hours and result, converts the hours into ECTS and credits what matches. Students with complete syllabi and full hour counts usually get the most recognised, which is why we ask for these documents early.

Which documents do I need from ISM Kyrgyzstan for a transfer?

An official transcript with grades and contact hours, the syllabi for each completed subject, proof of enrolment and of the semesters completed, and your school-leaving certificate and passport. Depending on the receiving country, some documents need certified translations or an apostille. We send each student a checklist after the first consultation.

What does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost?

The first consultation is free. We look at your ISM transcript, your open exams and your career goal, and tell you whether a transfer to a European partner university makes sense in your case and what timing is realistic.

I am from India. Does a transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan affect my Indian licence?

India's National Medical Commission, under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, requires the whole course, training and internship at the same foreign institution for the Indian licence. A transfer therefore suits students who plan a career in Europe, the UK, the USA or the Gulf. We check every Indian case individually.

Can I prepare for the USMLE after transferring from ISM Kyrgyzstan?

Yes. Some of our European partner universities offer very strong USMLE preparation, with pass rates of up to 100 % in the last two years. An EU medical degree leads into ECFMG certification and the USMLE Steps, so the US route stays open.

Is studying in Europe more expensive than ISM Kyrgyzstan?

Not always. ISM Kyrgyzstan tuition is set in US dollars at about USD 4,600 to 8,000 a year. English-taught Medicine and Dentistry at our European partner universities starts from €1,750 per semester, Pharmacy from €1,500 and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000. Living costs vary by city.

When should I start planning a transfer from ISM Kyrgyzstan?

As early as possible, ideally in spring for a winter-semester start. Transfer places are limited, and official documents from Bishkek often take several weeks. Starting early gives you more faculties to choose from and a better chance of not losing a year.
