UK Medicine Clearing 2026: How It Works and the Routes Abroad That Stay Open

UK Medicine Clearing 2026: How It Works and the Routes Abroad That Stay Open

Short answer

UK medicine clearing 2026 had very few places for 25,770 applicants. How clearing works, the results-week plan and European starts in October or February.

Thursday 13 August 2026 was A-level results day. By lunchtime the calls had started: families whose son or daughter had missed a medicine offer by one grade, asking whether clearing would still find a place. In my years running Medschool Experts from Bern, the August calls follow the same pattern every year.

I studied dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia from 2015 to 2021 and started at 24, so I know that a plan which changes in August is not a plan that has failed. Medschool Experts has placed more than 500 students at universities across Europe since then.

Clearing for medicine in the UK is a very narrow door. A medical degree in Europe that starts in October or February is a much wider one, and it stays open after the UK window closes.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

How does UCAS clearing work for medicine in 2026?

UCAS clearing in 2026 opened at 13:00 on A-level results day, Thursday 13 August, and runs until late September. Applicants without a confirmed place contact universities that still have vacancies. For medicine, vacancies are rare: most medical schools fill every place through firm and insurance offers, and the few clearing slots usually go within hours.

The mechanism itself is simple. If your firm and insurance choices are not confirmed, UCAS Hub shows you as being in clearing. You call a university, it checks your grades and your file, and if there is a place it makes a verbal offer. You then add that university as your clearing choice in UCAS Hub.

For most subjects that works well. For medicine it is a long shot. Medical schools have a fixed number of funded places, and a place left open is the exception.

How many medicine places are there in clearing?

Very few medicine places reach UK clearing in 2026, and no national total is published. The 2026 cycle saw 25,770 applicants for medicine, 10.4 per cent more than in 2025, against roughly 8,000 to 9,000 funded places in England. The University of Birmingham, for example, announced in August 2026 that medicine was closed to clearing because of demand.

The gap explains why clearing behaves so differently in medicine. When nearly three applicants compete for each place, offers are rarely left unused. Where a place does appear, it goes to whoever calls first with the right grades.

Adjustment, resits and the gap year

Three other UK mechanisms appear in August. Adjustment lets applicants who exceeded their offer look for a different course, which helps only those who already hold a place. Resits mean another year of A-levels and a new UCAS application. The gap year with a fresh UCAT is the most common choice after a missed offer.

Each of these keeps you in the UK system, and each costs at least one year. A resit in summer 2027 means a new UCAT in July to September 2027, a UCAS application in October 2027 and a start in September 2028. That is a legitimate route. It is also two years from now.

A missed offer by one grade is painful. It says nothing about your ability to become a doctor.

What to do in results week

In results week of August 2026, the sensible order was: check UCAS Hub at 8:00, call the university if you narrowly missed the offer, look at clearing from 13:00, and on the same Thursday or Friday contact Medschool Experts to keep a European start in October open. These steps do not exclude each other.

Results day was Thursday 13 August 2026. The same rhythm applies in August 2027.

The phone call to your firm choice matters. Universities sometimes confirm a place despite one grade below the offer, especially when the course is not full. Make that call before anything else.

The European route needs passport, school-leaving results and a few documents translated. If those reach us in the same week, there is enough time for an October start. Families who wait until September often still make it, but the margin is thinner.

Which European universities still start in September, October and February?

Most English-taught medical programmes at our 25+ partner universities in Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Malta begin in late September or October, so a decision in August still reaches the first lecture of 2026/27. Some partner faculties also start in February, which gives a second entry point for those who need more time.

Placement through Medschool Experts is independent of school-leaving grades. Neither your A-level results nor your UCAT score decides the place. Which faculty fits, and whether it starts in October or February, depends on your profile, budget and preferred country. We match that in a free consultation at /contact.

The programmes are taught in English, with the local language as an extra subject for patient contact. Bulgarian in Sofia, Pleven and Varna. Serbian in Banja Luka, Belgrade and Novi Sad. Polish in Poland. A few hours a week, every week.

Timeline from August to February

The European timeline from results day to the first lecture takes about six to eight weeks for an autumn start. Documents in late August, faculty confirmation and housing in September, arrival in late September or October. For a spring start, the preparation runs from November to January, with arrival in February 2027.

British citizens need a student visa or a national residence permit in EU countries since 2021, and Medschool Experts prepares that paperwork as part of the placement. Visa processing is the step that most often sets the pace, which is why August contact matters more than August decisions.

A February start has its own logic. Many families like it because the decision does not have to be made in the stress of results week, and the months from September to January can be used for a care job or a language course. Which partner faculty offers a spring start for your profile we answer in the consultation.

What does a European start cost? A worked example for 2026

Six years of medicine at the Medical University of Pleven in Bulgaria cost around 104,400 euros all-in at 2026 fee levels. Tuition is 9,000 euros a year. Living costs of about 650 euros a month over twelve months add 46,800 euros, and four flights home a year add about 3,600 euros. Faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina charge less in tuition.

Item, Medical University of Pleven, 2026Per yearSix years
Tuition9,000 euros54,000 euros
Rent, food, transport (650 euros a month)7,800 euros46,800 euros
Four flights home (about 150 euros each)600 euros3,600 euros
Total17,400 euros104,400 euros

For comparison, UK home tuition is 9,535 pounds a year in 2025/26, financed by a government student loan. The European route is paid by the family or a private loan, and that is its main limitation. Tuition is paid per year or per semester, never as one lump sum, so the money is needed in instalments.

The other side of the ledger is time. A start in October 2026 means graduation in 2032. A UK resit route that works means graduation around 2034. Two years as a junior doctor is real salary.

If you hold an offer for biomedical science or another course

Many applicants who miss medicine in August 2026 hold an insurance offer for biomedical science, pharmacology or a related degree. Taking that place is a reasonable choice, and it keeps a graduate-entry route open for 2029 or 2030. It also changes the European options rather than closing them.

A student who completes one or two years of a science degree and then decides on medicine in Europe brings transcripts with anatomy, physiology or biochemistry modules. Medschool Experts is the leading expert worldwide in credit recognition and frequently achieves placement into year 4 or year 5 at top universities. The details depend on the transcript, which we review on university transfer.

The question to settle in August is different. Do you want to study medicine from October, or do you want a science degree first? Both answers are fine. Only one of them makes you a doctor six years from now.

Recognition and the route back to the UK

A medical degree from an EU university is recognised in all EU member states under Directive 2005/36/EC. For a return to the UK, the GMC in 2026 registers doctors with a relevant European qualification from the EEA and Switzerland, and graduates from outside the EEA, for example Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina, take PLAB 1 and PLAB 2.

Both routes are used by graduates every year. After registration, they apply for Foundation posts or NHS trust jobs. The UK government reviews its rules for European qualifications periodically, so we look at the rule in force for your graduation year when we plan the route. PLAB remains open in any case.

The decision about where to work comes six years later. The degree keeps several doors open: the UK, the EU, and further afield.

International perspective: how this works in other countries

Other countries handle the gap between applicants and places in medicine in their own way, and each has a second chance mechanism. In Ireland, the CAO allocates medicine places by school-leaving points plus the HPAT score in August, and the few places left after the first round rarely reach a later round. Every year Irish school leavers start medicine in Bulgaria, Czechia and Poland in September and October.

In France, the PASS and L.AS first-year routes decide progress into medicine through ranking, and students who miss the cut often move to Belgium, Romania or Spain. In Italy the semestre filtro, introduced in 2025, lets everyone start the first semester and then ranks students after national exams in November and December. The ranking arrives early in the new year, which makes February starts in Europe interesting for Italian students.

In Germany, places are allocated through a central system by school grades and the TMS test, and thousands of German students study medicine in Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania each year. The pattern across these countries is the same as in the UK clearing week: national systems are full, and European English-taught programmes take the students who are ready to start.

Making the decision calmly

The best decision after a missed medicine offer in August 2026 is made in two steps: first secure the options, then choose. Keep the UK door open with a call to your firm choice and a look at clearing, and keep the European door open with documents sent to Medschool Experts in the same week.

Then sit down as a family with three numbers: the start date, the six-year budget and the country you would like to work in later. Read the experiences of students who made the same move on our student stories page. Decide when those numbers are clear, not when the phone is ringing.

The author's view

Every August since I started Medschool Experts in Bern, the calls on results day sound alike. A missed grade, a closed clearing list, and a family that thought there was only one way into medicine. The calmest families are those who had a European option prepared in spring, just in case.

When I started in Sofia in 2015 at 24, my plan had already changed once. Six years later it did not matter in the slightest. Nobody at a hospital asks how you entered medical school. They ask what you can do.

My assessment: use clearing, but do not bet the year on it. Send the documents for Europe in the same week. If a UK place appears, you have lost nothing.

Summary

  • UK clearing 2026 opened at 13:00 on Thursday 13 August and runs until late September.
  • Medicine had 25,770 applicants in the 2026 cycle and roughly 8,000 to 9,000 funded places in England.
  • Clearing vacancies in medicine are rare and usually filled within hours.
  • Most of our 25+ European partner faculties start in late September or October, some also in February.
  • Placement through Medschool Experts is independent of A-level grades and the UCAT.
  • Six years in Pleven cost around 104,400 euros all-in, and graduates can return to the UK through the GMC or PLAB.

Conclusion

Clearing is a lottery with very few tickets in medicine. A European start in October or February is a plan with a date. The two can run side by side in results week.

Frequently asked questions about medicine clearing

Is there medicine in UCAS clearing in 2026?

Rarely. Most UK medical schools fill all places through firm and insurance offers, and the University of Birmingham, among others, closed medicine to clearing in August 2026. Where a place appears, it is usually filled within hours. Applicants who miss their offer should call their firm choice first.

When did clearing open in 2026?

Clearing opened at 13:00 on Thursday 13 August 2026, A-level results day, after results became visible in UCAS Hub at 8:00. It runs until late September 2026. For medicine, the first hours of the first day are the only realistic window.

Can I still start medicine in Europe in October 2026?

Yes, if documents reach Medschool Experts in August or early September. Most English-taught medical programmes at our 25+ European partner universities start in late September or October. Which faculty fits depends on your profile, and we assess that in a free consultation.

Which European medical schools start in February?

Some of our partner faculties in Europe also take first-year students in February. The February start suits applicants who need more time for documents or a visa after results week. Which faculty offers a spring start for your profile in 2027 is answered in a free consultation.

Do I need A-level grades or the UCAT for a European placement?

No. Placement through Medschool Experts at our 25+ partner universities is independent of school-leaving grades and of the UCAT. Neither the A-level results nor a UCAT score decides the place. You need your school-leaving certificate and passport, and Medschool Experts prepares the rest.

How much does medicine in Europe cost?

Six years of medicine at the Medical University of Pleven cost around 104,400 euros including living costs at 2026 fee levels, with tuition of 9,000 euros a year. The University of Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina charges 4,499 euros a year. Tuition is paid per year or per semester.

Can I return to the UK as a doctor later?

Yes. In 2026 the GMC registers doctors with a relevant European qualification from the EEA and Switzerland, and graduates from Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina take PLAB 1 and PLAB 2. After registration they apply for Foundation posts or NHS jobs.
