Study clinical embryology in Brno: what the programme covers
The first half of the degree covers natural science and preclinical subjects at a level comparable to general medicine, with extra molecular biology and genetics. From year three the programme turns to your specialism: andrology, embryology, the basics of reproductive medicine, cryopreservation and genetic diagnostics. Quality management, ethics and healthcare law complete the curriculum.
- Years 1 and 2: anatomy, biology, biochemistry, physiology, histology and embryology, genetics, cell cultivation
- Year 3: developmental biology, pathophysiology, andrology, immunology for embryologists, propaedeutics of assisted reproduction
- Year 4: embryology, methods of assisted reproduction, cryopreservation, pharmacology for embryologists, clinical practice
- Year 5: preimplantation genetic testing, reproductive medicine, quality management, ethics, master thesis and final state examination
Hands-on training in the IVF teaching laboratory
Practical work is the core of the programme. The faculty set up new teaching laboratories with stereomicroscopes, incubators and micromanipulation systems, built to mirror a modern fertility centre. You train in groups of ten, and you can use the laboratory outside class hours to sharpen your micromanipulation skills. The department behind the programme belongs to the team that helped deliver the first IVF baby in Czechoslovakia in 1982 and runs eight research groups in developmental and stem cell biology.
Careers after a master in clinical embryology
Graduates become professionals in laboratory methods, a regulated healthcare profession in the Czech Republic. They work as clinical embryologists in assisted reproduction centres or build careers in reproductive genetics laboratories, medical diagnostics, reproductive counselling, laboratory management, research and the biotechnology industry. Because demand for trained embryologists is higher than supply, the outlook for entry roles and earnings is strong. The master also opens the way to a PhD, for example in Biomedical Sciences at Masaryk University.
