Study medicine in Europe: why the EU route works

A medical degree from an EU member state such as Bulgaria, Romania or the Czech Republic is recognised automatically in every EU country under Directive 2005/36/EC. You can work as a doctor in Germany, Italy or Ireland without a further exam once you speak the local language. Tuition in Eastern Europe is a fraction of what private medical schools charge in Western Europe. Living costs of 500 to 800 € a month are common.

Study medicine abroad outside the EU: Bosnia and Serbia

Foča and Niš are the most affordable ways to study medicine abroad in English. Foča costs 3,500 € a year and admits students through an interview, which we prepare you for. Graduates who want to work in Germany take the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) and then receive their licence. Both universities are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, which opens the way to the USMLE and other international licensing exams.

Caribbean medical schools for US and Canadian students

If you plan to practise in the United States or Canada, a Caribbean medical school is the classic route. Basic sciences take place on the island, clinical rotations follow in US hospitals, and the curriculum is built around the USMLE. Read our guide to Caribbean medical schools and our page for US students.

How much does it cost to study medicine abroad?

Tuition for six years ranges from about 21,000 € in Foča to about 90,000 € in Brno. Living costs come on top. Many private medical schools in the US cost more than 200,000 €. See the cheapest medical schools in Europe for more figures.

  • School-leaving certificate with biology and chemistry
  • English at B2 level, at some universities B1 is enough
  • Valid passport and certified copies of your documents

Applications for the autumn intake usually run from spring until July. Places at popular universities fill early, so start about nine months before you want to begin.

Studying medicine abroad: first-hand experience

Medschool Experts was founded by Marcel Kloos, a Swiss-recognised dentist who studied at the Medical University of Sofia from 2015 to 2021. He started at 24, later than most of his classmates. Today he and his team have placed more than 500 students at universities abroad.

International view: getting into medical school around the world

In the United States, medical school starts only after a four-year bachelor's degree, and admission depends on the MCAT. In the United Kingdom, applicants sit the UCAT and compete for a fixed number of places. In Austria, the MedAT entrance test decides, and 75 percent of places are reserved for Austrian school leavers. In India, admission to medical college runs through NEET. At our partner universities in Europe, an interview or a short subject test is the main step, so a motivated student can plan the start of medical school.
