Failing medical school at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) rarely means that you lack talent. It usually means that one course, one year or one difficult phase has taken more time than the system allows. Medicine at NKUA is a demanding six-year programme, and Greek law now sets a clear time limit for it.

Below you find the exam and progression rules that apply at NKUA, the points where students get stuck, and the options if you want to continue your degree somewhere else. Medschool Experts helps students at exactly this point, and the first consultation costs nothing.

Failing medical school at the University of Athens: exam rules at NKUA

Key facts

  • The Medicine programme at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) lasts 12 semesters and carries 360 ECTS
  • Graduation requires 48 compulsory courses and 12 elective courses
  • A course is passed with a grade of 5 or higher on a scale from 0 to 10
  • Exams take place in January to February, in June to July and in the September resit
  • The maximum study duration is 18 semesters, which is 9 years
  • More than three fails in one course: one application for other examiners per course
  • A certified disability of at least 50 percent exempts you from the maximum duration

In short: At the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Medicine has 12 semesters and 360 ECTS. Exams run in January to February, June to July and a September resit, with 5 out of 10 as the pass mark. Failed exams alone do not end your studies at NKUA; the 9-year time limit does. Medschool Experts organises transfers away from NKUA; the consultation is free.

NKUA does not cap the number of attempts per exam in the way some other countries do. You sit a course at the end of the semester, and if you fail you can try again in the next exam period. What counts is time. Every semester you stay enrolled counts towards the limit, whether you pass courses or not.

The programme splits into three blocks. Semesters 1 to 5 are pre-clinical, semesters 6 to 9 are clinical, and semesters 10 to 12 are full-time clinical practice. Students who fall behind in the pre-clinical block carry open courses into the clinical years, where the workload per semester is higher.

Maximum study duration at NKUA Medicine: 9 years

In short: For programmes longer than eight semesters, Article 76 of Law 4957/2022, as replaced by Article 130 of Law 5224/2025, adds six semesters to the minimum duration. Medicine at the University of Athens therefore allows 18 semesters, or 9 years. NKUA deletes students automatically two months after the September resit results. Medschool Experts plans transfers before that date.

The formula is simple. Programmes of eight semesters get four extra semesters. Programmes of more than eight semesters get six. Medicine has twelve, so the limit is eighteen semesters. The deletion is not a decision of a committee. It happens automatically, two months after the results of the September resit are posted. Deleted students can ask the secretariat for a certificate that lists their courses, grades and ECTS.

Which cohort are you in? The rule applies fully to students admitted from the 2022/2023 academic year. For older cohorts, transitional rules in Article 153 of Law 5224/2025 count the time from the 2021/2022 academic year. Ask the secretariat in writing for your personal deadline. A dated reply from the secretariat settles the question.

Failed the same exam more than three times at NKUA

In short: A student at the University of Athens who has failed the same course more than three times can apply to the head of the department for evaluation by other examiners (Article 129 of Law 5224/2025). The course teacher and the last examiner are excluded. The right applies once per course. Medschool Experts advises using it alongside a transfer plan.

The evaluation is either a re-grading of your earlier written answers or a new written or oral exam. It must take place within three months of the appointment of the examiners. If the head of the department does not appoint examiners within 60 days, you can turn to the dean and, after another 60 days, to the Ministry of Education.

There is a special rule for the final stretch. If you are in the last academic year before the maximum duration, the evaluation must be completed within 60 days. If it is not, the law allows you to finish your studies without passing that course, by completing the required teaching and credit units in another way. If the other examiners fail you as well, you return to the normal exam procedure for that course.

Extension, extraordinary exam and exceptions at NKUA

In short: NKUA students can apply for two extra semesters if they have passed at least 70 percent of the ECTS and sat at least two assessments in the last four semesters, one of them passed. The deadline is 30 days after the September results. Students with a disability of at least 50 percent are exempt from the limit.

The extension has two conditions. First, you have passed at least 70 percent of the ECTS of your programme when you apply. Second, in one of the four semesters before the application you took at least two assessments and passed at least one. If a thesis or internship is still open, the extension is three semesters. During the extension you cannot enrol part-time and you cannot interrupt your studies.

If only one or two courses are missing after the extension, you can ask for an extraordinary exam within 10 days of the last results. Your deletion is suspended until those results are out, which must happen by 15 December. If you have not graduated by then, the deletion follows automatically.

Two exceptions matter. A certified disability of at least 50 percent exempts you from the maximum duration. Serious health reasons of your own, or of a first-degree blood relative, spouse or partner, can justify going beyond the limit on application. The procedure and the documents are set out in the NKUA internal regulation (Government Gazette B 816/5.3.2025). Studies can also be suspended for up to two years for extenuating circumstances in the English-taught Medical Degree programme of the School of Medicine.

Deleted from NKUA Medicine: what happens next

In short: After a deletion from the Medical School of the University of Athens, your student status there ends, but your passed courses stay on record. The secretariat issues a certificate of courses, grades and ECTS. Medschool Experts uses these documents to plan a transfer to a partner university in Europe; the consultation is free.

Request the certificate and the course descriptions at once, even if you still hope for an extension. Universities abroad assess your courses by hours, content and ECTS. Without documents they cannot give an answer. With them, a case can often be judged within days.

Why students get stuck in Medicine at the University of Athens

In short: Students at NKUA Medicine usually get stuck because of fit and circumstances, not ability: a heavy pre-clinical block, one course that keeps failing, work alongside studies or a family crisis. Medschool Experts helps these students continue their degree at a partner university abroad.

NKUA is one of the best-known medical schools in Greece, and its programme asks a lot: 60 courses over twelve semesters. Some students lose the thread in the pre-clinical block, especially when a course is examined orally or when one subject blocks the next. Rent in Athens, a part-time job or illness in the family add to this. Fit and pace matter as much as effort. None of it says anything about the doctor you will become.

Switch early: checklist if exams keep going wrong

In short: A switch from NKUA to another medical school works best early, while your passed courses are recent and your time limit is far away. Medschool Experts recommends acting after the second failed attempt in the same course. The consultation is free.

  • You have failed the same course in two or more periods.
  • An open course blocks several courses behind it.
  • You are in your seventh year or later.
  • You study for months but freeze in the exam.
  • Your passed ECTS are below 70 percent in the later years.

If two of these apply, ask for an assessment now. Clinical years bring more material, not less, so the problem rarely solves itself in the next semester.

Next four weeks: plan for students at NKUA

In short: In four weeks, a student at the University of Athens can confirm the personal deadline, check eligibility for the extension, request the transcript and book a free consultation with Medschool Experts. This keeps staying and transferring open at the same time.

Week 1Ask the secretariat in writing for your maximum study date and your list of passed courses

Transfer from NKUA to a medical school abroad

In short: A transfer from NKUA Medicine to a university abroad is possible. Medschool Experts organises the whole application process, aims for no loss of time with entry into a higher year where your profile allows, and has 25+ partner universities in Europe. Every case is checked individually and the consultation is free.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, deadlines differ, and documents must arrive in the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers worldwide and therefore plan and carry them out confidently. The consultation costs you nothing.

Medschool Experts is built for this situation. We can save your medical career, because your passed courses are not lost. Where the profile allows, we aim for entry into a higher year, so that you do not start from the beginning.

Returning home after a transfer: is the degree recognised?

In short: A degree in Medicine from another EU or EEA country is recognised in Greece under Directive 2005/36/EC. After recognition you apply for the licence to practise with the competent Greek authority. Medschool Experts plans the route back from the first consultation, so a transfer from NKUA is not a one-way move.

Many families worry that leaving Athens means leaving Greece for good. It does not. You graduate with an EU degree and return as a qualified doctor. For other EU and EEA countries the same directive applies, and the national licence body of the country where you want to work handles the final registration.

Cost of continuing Medicine abroad

In short: Continuing after NKUA does not have to be expensive. Through Medschool Experts, English-taught Medicine and Dentistry start from €1,750 tuition per semester, Pharmacy from €1,500 per semester and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000 per semester. The consultation is free.

Greek-taught undergraduate study at a public university charges no tuition, so each extra year looks cheap. It is not. A blocked year still costs rent, living expenses and a year of your professional life. A year that moves you forward in a new programme often costs less over the whole degree than two blocked years at home.

The author's view

I am Marcel Kloos, founder and owner of Medschool Experts and a federally recognised dentist. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015 at the age of 24 and graduated in 2021. I know what it is like to begin later than others and to look for the right place to continue.

The students from Athens who write to us rarely lack ability. Usually there is one course, one hard year or one family situation behind the block. NKUA is a respected university, and the time limit is a fact of Greek law, not a judgement about you. My advice is to look at the dates early and to compare options while all of them are still open. A transfer is a complicated undertaking, and it works best with experts who have done it many times.

Summary

Failing medical school at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens does not end your studies by itself. The pass mark is 5 out of 10, failed courses can be sat again in January to February, June to July and the September resit, and a student who fails the same course more than three times can ask once for other examiners. What ends the right to study is time: Medicine at NKUA allows 18 semesters, which is 9 years, and the university deletes students automatically two months after the September resit results.

Two extra semesters are possible for students with at least 70 percent of their ECTS who have sat exams recently, and an extraordinary exam is possible when one or two courses are left. A certified disability of at least 50 percent and serious health reasons are recognised exceptions. If exams keep going wrong, an early switch is easier than a late one, because passed courses are recent and the time limit is far away.

Conclusion

If you are stuck at NKUA, check your personal deadline in writing, request your transcript and compare staying with a transfer while all options are open. Medschool Experts organises transfers from the University of Athens to partner universities in Europe, aims for no loss of time and checks every case individually. The first step is a free transfer consultation.

Failing medical school at the University of Athens: 9 questions and answers

How many times can I retake an exam at the University of Athens?

NKUA does not set a fixed number of attempts per exam in the rules checked here. You can sit a failed course again in the next exam period, and the 9-year maximum study duration is the real limit. After more than three fails you can ask once for other examiners.

What is the maximum study duration for Medicine at NKUA?

It is 18 semesters, which is 9 years. Article 76 of Law 4957/2022, as replaced by Law 5224/2025, adds six semesters to the minimum duration of 12 semesters.

What happens if I fail the last attempt at the University of Athens?

If the limit is reached, the university deletes you automatically two months after the September resit results. Before that, you can apply for two extra semesters within 30 days of the September results, or for an extraordinary exam if one or two courses are left.

Can I be deleted from Medicine at NKUA?

Yes. Students who reach the maximum study duration without graduating are deleted automatically. A certified disability of at least 50 percent and serious health reasons are exceptions.

Can I transfer from NKUA to another medical school?

Yes. Medschool Experts organises transfers from NKUA to partner universities in Europe. Passed courses are assessed individually, and the consultation is free.

Will I lose a year if I transfer from the University of Athens?

Not necessarily. Medschool Experts aims for no loss of time, with entry into a higher year where your profile allows. Every case is checked individually.

How much does it cost to continue Medicine abroad?

Through Medschool Experts, English-taught Medicine and Dentistry start from €1,750 tuition per semester, Pharmacy from €1,500 per semester and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000 per semester.

Is a degree from abroad recognised in Greece?

Yes. A degree in Medicine from another EU or EEA country is recognised in Greece under Directive 2005/36/EC. After recognition you apply for the licence to practise.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
