Studying in Bulgaria and it's not working out? We arrange the study transfer from Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Pleven and Stara Zagora to NC-free universities.

Bulgaria has for years been one of the most popular paths to NC-free medical education: taught in English, EU degree, state universities with long traditions, and tuition fees in the mid-range. For many, this path works out exactly as planned. I studied in Sofia myself and would make the same decision again.

Even so: not every university suits every person. Some realize in the second or third year that an exam simply won't pass. Others are unhappy with the supervision, the city, or the pace of study. Others still have personal reasons that have nothing to do with the course itself. For all three situations, there is the same way out: a study transfer.

Medschool Experts arranges transfers from all Bulgarian faculties to other European universities — to Foča in Bosnia, to Niš in Serbia, to Valletta in Malta, and to other locations. Your passed subjects travel with you. Those who plan early enough rarely lose a year of study.

Which medical universities exist in Bulgaria?

Bulgaria has six universities with English-language medicine or dentistry programs. We have already arranged transfers from all of them.

  • Medical University Sofia (MU Sofia) — the largest and most well-known institution in the country, medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy in English, six years, 360 ECTS. To the location article.
  • Medical University Varna "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" — medicine and dentistry in English, modern campus on the Black Sea. To the location article.
  • Medical University Plovdiv — medicine and dentistry in English, second-largest medical university in the country. Sofia or Plovdiv compared.
  • Medical University Pleven — medicine in English, known for its simulation center and telemedicine facilities. To the location article.
  • Trakia University Stara Zagora — medicine and veterinary medicine in English. To the location article.
  • University "Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov" Burgas — newest medical faculty in the country, medicine in English.

Also included are the Faculty of Medicine at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and the veterinary faculty at the University of Forestry Sofia. None of these places are allocated through the German Numerus clausus. Tuition fees range from approximately 8,000 to 10,000 EUR per academic year depending on the institution and subject.

Why do students transfer out of Bulgaria?

From our placement experience, we essentially know three reasons. None of them is a failure, and none reflects badly on the Bulgarian faculties — they provide good training, that is beyond question.

The academic situation didn't work out

A subject in the second or third year becomes a bottleneck. The resit is only in the next round, the academic year cannot be completed, and what begins as a semester's delay quickly becomes a full year. At this point there are two options: try again at the same faculty — or take the already-passed credits along and continue studying where the exam rhythm fits better. Both can be right. How the Bulgarian exam system works is explained in detail in the article Exams in Medical Studies in Bulgaria.

The personal situation didn't work out

The city, the living situation, the cohort size, the supervisor-to-student ratio, the distance from home. These are not small matters — six years is a long time, and those who don't feel at home at their study location study less effectively. Transferring to a smaller faculty with closer supervision resolves this in many cases.

Something changed personally

Illness in the family, a relationship, a financial setback, a move. When 8,000 to 10,000 EUR in tuition per year suddenly becomes unmanageable, a location at 3,500 EUR per year is not a last resort — it is the sensible decision.

How do we find the right university for you?

You will not find a checklist, a document list or a set of dates on this page, and that is deliberate. What each university wants to see differs from one institution to the next and changes from year to year — and a transfer planned around an outdated detail costs exactly the time you were trying to save.

The way it works with us is simpler than any checklist. Tell us where you stand: what you have studied so far, what you have already passed, and which countries you could imagine living in. We look at that individually and then tell you at which university and in which country we can place you — and where we can get you in predictably rather than on a hope.

We always check the highest possible entry point for you; in many cases that means continuing in one of the later study years instead of starting over. Through our network of official partner universities we have the widest choice of places in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. And you stay enrolled in Bulgaria while we do it — you plan the move from a secure position, not from nothing.

Where can you transfer from Bulgaria?

Three locations account for the majority of transfers. They differ considerably in costs, language, and environment — which one fits depends on where you are in your studies.

University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

One of our core locations, for which we hold the representation in the German-speaking world. State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, accredited in compliance with EU standards until 2033. Tuition is 1,750 EUR per semester, i.e. 3,500 EUR per academic year. The academic year begins in November; the practical year can optionally be completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. Placements here are typically very high — transfer students usually continue in an advanced year of study. To the Foča study guide.

University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)

Large state university with its own university hospital. Medicine in English, six years, 360 ECTS, degree: MD. Extensive clinical training, clear exam structure, predictable course of study. The fee is 1,500 EUR per quarter, i.e. 6,000 EUR per academic year — and is one of the few that can be paid quarterly. Worthwhile if you still have at least three years of study ahead. To the Niš location article.

MediCampus Europeo, Malta

Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, medicine in English, six years, 360 ECTS, clinical section from the third year onward. The degree "Doctor of General Medicine MD" is awarded by Trakia State University; the institution holds the Maltese MFHEA license. English is an official language in Malta, so daily life runs without a second national language. The fee is 14,500 EUR per year with a single payment, and the academic year begins in October. To the Valletta location article.

What other NC-free options exist in Europe?

The transfer is not limited to these three locations. We work with universities throughout Europe and beyond — depending on where you are in your studies, your budget, and your plans. The complete overview:

All fees in direct comparison can be found in the overview of tuition fees at all NC-free universities in Europe.

The placement year depends on the individual case

All paths described here are designed to achieve the highest possible year placement for you through us — with no or minimal loss of time. What that means concretely differs from person to person, and we would rather look at your situation than publish a rule that fits nobody. Which year is realistic in your case is something we tell you in the free consultation.

What the transfer costs — and what you save

Bulgaria sits in the mid-to-upper range of NC-free locations at around 8,000 to 10,000 EUR per academic year. Foča costs 3,500 EUR per year, Niš 6,000 EUR. Someone transferring in the third year still has four years ahead — at Foča that is roughly 18,000 to 26,000 EUR less in tuition fees depending on the original university, plus lower living costs of realistically 450 to 500 EUR per month.

Our placement fee is success-based: if no place is secured, you incur no costs. The exact figure is given in the initial consultation because it depends on the target location and the year of study. The initial consultation itself and the review of your situation are free of charge.

Why you should seek advice as early as possible

A study transfer succeeds with fewer losses the earlier it is planned. Three reasons argue against waiting:

  • Places are limited. In higher years, a place only comes up when one becomes free. The earlier we know about you, the more options are still open.
  • The academic years start at different times. Foča begins in November, Malta in October, Niš runs on a quarterly rhythm. The more lead time we have, the more calmly the move can be arranged.
  • Another resit can worsen your starting position. As long as you are enrolled, your negotiating position is at its best. That is why it is worth having the conversation before you register for the next attempt.

Looking at your situation takes only a few days and costs nothing. Tell us what you have studied so far and where you could imagine going, and we will tell you at which university and in which country we can place you. Book a free study consultation — by phone or video call, parents are welcome to join.

Author's Opinion

I studied in Sofia myself, from 2015 to 2021, and I deliberately say nothing negative about Bulgaria. The training is solid, the degree is recognized throughout the EU, and I know many people who found their way there. But I also know the other side: people from my cohort who got stuck on a single subject for a full year, and people who never felt at home in the city.

What frustrates me about the conversations from Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, and Pleven every time is the timing. Most people get in touch when they already have two attempts behind them and a year has been lost. A semester earlier, the transfer would often have been completely loss-free.

A transfer is not failure. It is a location decision — and that decision is best made early and soberly, not in a panic after the third exam.

Conclusion

Whatever your situation, you don't have to figure out the best path alone. At Medschool Experts, we work with the largest network of official partner universities, and we individually assess the highest possible year of entry for every student. In many cases, entry is even possible in the final two years of medical studies. Book a free consultation with our team and let's map out your personal path together.

Frequently Asked Questions About Study Transfers from Bulgaria

From which Bulgarian universities do you arrange transfers?

From all of them: Medical University Sofia, Medical University Varna, Medical University Plovdiv, Medical University Pleven, Trakia University Stara Zagora, and the University of Burgas — for both medicine and dentistry.

Will I lose study time when transferring?

As a rule, no — provided the transfer is planned in time. We always aim for the highest possible entry point for you, so that you continue rather than start over. Those who wait too long risk losing a full year.

Do I have to give up my place in Bulgaria first?

No — and you shouldn't. You stay enrolled while we look for the right university for you, so you always plan the move from a secure position rather than from nothing.

What if I have failed an exam multiple times?

That is not an exclusion criterion, and it is not something we judge. Tell us where you stand and we will look at what is possible — ideally before you use up further attempts.

What do you need from me for a first assessment?

Just your profile: what you have studied so far, what you have already passed, and which countries you could imagine. We deliberately publish no document checklist, because requirements differ from university to university and change from year to year. We tell you what is needed once we know where we can place you.

Which year of study can I enter?

We always check the highest possible entry point for you. In many cases that means continuing in one of the later study years rather than starting again. What is realistic in your case depends on your individual profile, which is exactly what we look at in the free consultation.

What do the target universities cost compared to Bulgaria?

Foča 3,500 EUR per academic year, Niš 6,000 EUR, MediCampus Europeo in Malta 14,500 EUR with a single payment. In Bulgaria, fees range from approximately 8,000 to 10,000 EUR per year depending on the institution.

Is the target university's degree recognized in Germany?

Yes. For EU degrees, recognition is automatic; for degrees from outside the EU, the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) comes first, followed by full licensure. Details can be found in the article Licensure and Recognition.

What does the consultation cost?

Nothing. The initial meeting and the assessment of your situation are free of charge and non-binding; our placement fee is only due upon successful placement.

How quickly should I get in touch?

As early as possible — ideally before your next resit exam. Places in higher years are limited, and the more lead time we have, the more universities remain open to you.

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
