Studying medicine in Romania and it's not working out? We arrange the study transfer from Cluj, Iași, Timișoara, Târgu Mureș and other locations.
Which Medical Universities Are There in Romania?
- UMF Iuliu Hațieganu Cluj-Napoca — to the location article
- UMF Grigore T. Popa Iași — to the location article
- UMF Victor Babeș Timișoara — to the location article
- UMFST George Emil Palade Târgu Mureș — to the location article
In addition there are Carol Davila in Bucharest, universities in Craiova, Constanța, Sibiu, Oradea, Brașov and the private Vasile Goldîn University in Arad. Admission follows entrance examinations or portfolio selection, not the school-leaving grade; tuition fees are approximately 5,000 to 8,000 EUR per academic year. A regional overview can be found in the article Studying medicine and dentistry in Romania.
Why Do Students from Romania Transfer to Another University?
One Subject Becomes a Bottleneck
Romanian curricula are extensive and examination-intensive. Those who fail a foundational subject often lose an entire academic year rather than a semester. Then a clear-eyed look at the alternative pays off: take the passed credits and continue studying at a place where the pace is a better fit.
The Clinical Section Does Not Fit
From the third year onwards, the local language becomes more important in clinical contact. Those who find this impedes patient contact find better conditions at a university with consistently English-language clinical operations.
Something Has Changed Personally
Family, relationship, finances, relocation. These too are legitimate reasons for a location change — and no reason to abandon the degree.
How Does the Study Transfer from Romania Work?
- Review documents. Transcript of Records with ECTS and grades plus enrolment certificate. Free and non-binding.
- Determine target year. Matching against the curriculum of the target university before anything is submitted.
- Reserve a place. Places in higher years are allocated upon receipt of complete documents.
- Recognition procedure. The target university formally recognises credits; we assist with translations and notarisation.
- Enrol and continue studying. Deregistration in Romania is the final step.

Where Can You Transfer To from Romania?
University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
One of our core locations, for which we hold representation in German-speaking countries. State faculty with its own university hospital, human and dental medicine in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliant accreditation until 2033. 3,500 EUR per academic year, starting in November, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. Assessments here are typically very high — transfer students generally enter a high year of study. To the Foča study guide.
University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)
Large public university with its own university hospital, human medicine in English, 360 ECTS, MD degree. 1,500 EUR per quarter, i.e. 6,000 EUR per academic year. To the Niš location article.
MediCampus Europeo, Malta
Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, human medicine in English, Maltese MFHEA licence, English as official language in daily life. Transfer from the second year onwards, 14,500 EUR per year with single payment. To the Valletta location article.
The complete list of all NC-free options can be found in the Study transfer article on Bulgaria.
How High the Assessment Turns Out Depends on the Individual Case
All paths mentioned here are designed to give you the highest possible year placement through us — without or with minimal loss of time. However, this only becomes binding after your documents have been reviewed. As a rule of thumb: usually no more than two exams may be outstanding, whose ECTS credits must not exceed a certain upper limit, for a transfer to the next higher year to be possible. What is feasible in your case is clarified in the free consultation.
What the Transfer Means Financially
Romania, at approximately 5,000 to 8,000 EUR per academic year, is already in the affordable range. Foča costs 3,500 EUR, Niš 6,000 EUR. The financial difference here is therefore smaller than for students from other countries — the real gain lies in saved study time and a better-fitting study environment. Our placement fee is success-based: if no study place is secured, no costs arise for you.
Why You Should Seek Advice as Early as Possible
- Places are limited and allocated upon receipt of complete documents.
- Deadlines are running: Foča starts in November, Malta in October, Niš admits quarterly.
- Being enrolled is the better starting position — hence the consultation before the next resit.
Reviewing your documents takes a few days and costs nothing. Book a free study consultation.
Author's Opinion
Romania is one of the best value offerings in the EU, and the faculties provide good training. The point I hear most often in consultations is not the price, but clinical daily life: those who find in their fourth year that they are linguistically left on the sidelines at the bedside lose motivation — and motivation is the scarcest resource in medical studies.
Those who reach this point should not wait until the year is lost. A transfer is not a failure, but a location decision.
Conclusion
- From all Romanian faculties with an international programme, a study transfer is possible.
- Passed subjects are transferable; those who plan in time lose no academic year.
- Most common destinations: Foča (3,500 EUR per year), Niš (6,000 EUR), MediCampus Europeo Malta (14,500 EUR).
- Initial consultation and document review are free; the fee is success-based.
Romania is a good and affordable location — but no location suits everyone. What matters is how early you get in touch.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about

- Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
- Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
